10 Tips for Voluminous, Healthy Red Hair

Boost Your Red Roots!

Updated: October 31st, 2023

We all want more voluminous hair, but sometimes it feels like our red hair is just plain flat. Here are 10 tips and tricks for how to get more volume in your red hair

READ: How Redheads Can Achieve Their Hair Goals

1. Try backcombing

The simplest way to apply more volume to your hairstyle is by teasing or backcombing. This is where you comb the hair backward at the root to create more volume.

2. Use densifying spray

Applying a densifying spray can help your hair have more hold when you style it and give you more volume at the root.

3. Change your part

When your hair sits in the same spot day after day for too long it becomes used to that area. Switching your part will help the hair have more lift at the root.

READ: How You Should Part Your Red Hair: Is Your Part Out of Style?

4. Use rollers

Applying rollers to your hair can help give it body and volume. Apply large rollers to avoid adding too much curl.

5. Flip your head

Hanging your head upside down when washing and drying can help the hairs have more lift and give you more volume.

Looking for the perfect hair towel to go with your new volume? Look no further!

How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel

When drying your hair opt to use a microfiber towel! Introducing the How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads. Because wet hair is at its most vulnerable, this custom microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your red hair and dries it quickly, all while protecting it from stretching and breakage. This design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place. Your hair journey starts here, redheads.

6. Add dry shampoo

Even if your hair isn’t dirty, a spritz of dry shampoo can help to give it more hold and stiffen the root for more volume.

7. Use mousse

Apply mousse to wet hair for added volume and body. If you have curly red hair, mousse is a great way to define your curls.

8. Try a round brush

Give yourself an at-home blowout and instantly add volume, body, and texture to your hair when you blow-dry with a round brush

9. Get a trim

Most redheads have thick hair, and your hair might be weighing you down. Try getting a trim, getting it thinned, or even making a big chop to help hair bounce back at the root.

10. Skip a wash

Washing your hair too much could lead to it hanging flat. Try skipping a wash and using your “dirty” roots to your advantage.

Do Redheads Look Younger? Study Says They’re More Likely To Age Slower

This is seriously the best news for redheads

As if we needed another reason to love our red hair.

Have you ever had someone assume you were younger than you were? It’s commonly said redheads age more gracefully than those with other hair colors and most look several years younger than they actually are.

A few years ago, we discussed a recent study about redheads aging slower, but more studies are on the rise. Here are more reasons why redheads might appear to be younger than they really are:

Red hair usually grays or turns white later in life

You may have noticed most redheads don’t gray the way other hair colors do. Often, red hair will just start to fade until it’s white or a warm gray tone. Due to this, many redheads can keep youthful-looking hair longer than their blonde or brunette counterparts.

Redheads might have less damage/signs of aging

Redheads know the importance of using SPF and proper sun protection. This means that there is a reduced risk of sun damage and early signs of aging in the skin of redheads. This means our skin stays youthful for longer, helping us appear younger.

The MC1R gene might actually make redheads look young

According to research published in Current Biology, people with the MC1R gene, aka the gene that produces red hair and fair skin, tend to look several years younger than their non-ginger counterparts. Studies have shown that the MC1R gene that is carried by redheads may actually help to reduce the effects of UV exposure and reduce inflammation in the body. Both of these factors might help redheads to appear more youthful.

8 Redhead Stereotypes: Are These True?

True or False?

As redheads, we’ve heard it all. There are tons of redhead stereotypes, some are true and some are just downright silly.

Today, in honor of National Love Your Red Hair Day, we are breaking some of them down! Let us know in the comments which stereotypes you’ve noticed about redheads.

READ: 10 Things All Redheads Have Done or Experienced

1. Redheads are feisty

FALSE! People tend to think that because we have red hair, we must have a red hot temper. While this may be true for some redheads, we’re just like everyone else. Our hair color doesn’t determine our attitude, but be careful because sometimes ginger will snap.

2 All redheads are Irish or Scottish

FALSE! People with red hair can be from anywhere. It’s true that the majority of the world’s redheads come from Ireland and Scotland, but not all. Redheads can be found all over the world and even in unexpected places like Israel, Spain, and Africa.

READ: News Flash: Not All Redheads Are Irish

3. Redheads feel pain differently

TRUE! The MC1R gene that causes red hair also seems to cause a change in the way redheads feel pain. Studies have been done to show that redheads may need more anesthesia than those with other hair colors.

READ: Mc1R Gene Makes Redheads More Sensitive To Pain

4. Redheads can’t go in the sun

FALSE! We can go in the sun just as much as anyone else can. Most of us opt not to risk sun exposure, or to cover up and use sun protection when we do. This is because we are more prone to developing skin cancer.

5. All redheads have freckles

FALSE! While many redheads do have freckles, not all do. Freckles are something that your body creates and some people are more genetically inclined to produce freckles.

6. Redheaded women are better in bed

IT’S A SECRET! There have been studies that show that redheaded women may be getting more action than their blonde and brunette counterparts. Does this mean they are better in bed? Maybe…we’ll never tell.

7. Redheaded men are nerdy

FALSE! Redheaded men are no more “nerdy” than the average man. TV likes to portray ginger men as geeks and nerds, but there are plenty of redheaded hotties out there who are movie stars, singers, athletes, and models.

8. Redheads are unique and rare

TRUE! Redheads make up less than 2% of the population, making them quite rare. The unique gene we carry that gives us our gorgeous hair color is not something everyone has and that makes it special.

4 Reasons Redheads Should Use Bar Soap Over Body Wash

Looking for a new way to cleanse your skin?

Whatever you use to clean your body in the shower, you want to make sure it’s getting the job done. You also want to make sure it’s redhead-approved and doesn’t irritate your sensitive skin. One option that’s making a comeback is bar soap. If you’re looking for a new form of body wash to use in the shower, consider using bar soap. Here are a few of the benefits:

1. More cost-effective

A single bottle of body wash or shower gel from the drugstore on average costs about $5 – $7, while the average bar of soap from the drug store costs about $2 – $3. There are cheaper and more expensive options depending on what brand you buy, but on average, bar soap is about half the price of body wash or shower gel. You can also buy bar soap in packs that lower the cost even more.

READ: Spend vs. Save — Where to Invest In Your Redhead Skincare

2. Safe for sensitive redhead skin

Because of the way bar soap is made, it’s easier to make it hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. There are certain ingredients that need to go into bottled liquid soap products to ensure they last, but bar soap doesn’t always need those same ingredients. It’s also relatively easy to find unscented bar soap, whereas finding unscented body wash or shower gel usually means you’re paying a premium in price.

READ: How To Tell If A Beauty Product is Safe For Redhead Sensitive Skin

3. Great for shaving

If you buy a bar soap with good lather, it can be used for shaving legs and underarms instead of shaving cream. Simply wet a loofa and work up a lather with your bar soap. Apply to your body and shave like normal. This means you have one less product to buy and it’s perfect for travel!

4. Less plastic waste

One of the worst parts about body wash and shower gel is the amount of plastic waste they produce. If you use a bottle every 1-3 months, you’re adding 4-12 bottles to the landfill every year. That might not seem like a lot but over a 30-year span, that’s hundreds of bottles wasted. Bar soap comes in a lot less packaging, and you can even get bar soap that’s unwrapped or wrapped in recyclable paper to reduce waste.
