3 Things Redheads Should Know Before Getting a Tattoo

Will Having Red Hair Change Your Tattoo Experience?

If you’ve ever thought about getting a tattoo, you might be wondering how the experience will go. Getting a tattoo as a redhead is generally the same as it would be for anyone else, but there can be pretty major differences. Here are a few things you need to know about getting a tattoo as a redhead:

1. Tattoos can look different on fair skin

Since most redheads have pretty fair skin, your tattoo may look different. Black ink will look darker and colors may be more vibrant than they would on someone with darker skin. This can be a great thing because your tattoo may look fresh and new for longer than those with darker skin.

2. Your pain tolerance might be different

We all know redheads need more anesthesia to numb them from pain, but did you know redheads actually have higher overall pain tolerance, especially when it comes to their skin? That doesn’t mean getting a tattoo won’t hurt, but it might not hurt as much as you think it will.

READ: Do Redheads Need More Anesthesia & Do They Experience More Pain?

3. It might take longer to heal

Redheads naturally have thinner skin. This means the healing process might take a little longer. Consult your tattoo artist beforehand and let them know you’ve got thin skin. They may have tips and tricks for you.

How to Choose Jewelry When You Have Sensitive Redhead Skin

Find the Right Jewelry for Your Skin

Most redheads have sensitive skin, which can make jewelry shopping difficult. Most fashion jewelry is made of cheap materials and these metals may cause irritation or discoloration of the skin. Here are a few tips and tricks for jewelry shopping as a redhead with sensitive skin:

READ: How To Tell If A Beauty Product is Safe For Redhead Sensitive Skin

1. Know your metals

Jewelry can be made out of many different types of metals. Some of these metals may be one type of metal coated in another. For instance, white gold is actually a mix of yellow gold and other metals that have been dipped in rhodium to get that silver color. One thing to watch out for is jewelry that contains nickel. Many redheads are allergic to nickel and it can cause irritation to the skin.

If you know you’re allergic to a certain metal, stay away from it. If you have sensitive skin, opt for jewelry made of gold over 14k, plated gold, surgical stainless steel, sterling silver, titanium, or platinum. Try a brand like Maison Miru for trendy, affordable and sensitive-skin approved pieces.

2. Invest in quality pieces or opt for non-metal jewelry

Cheap costume or fashion jewelry is the most likely to irritate your skin. Instead of buying a bunch of inexpensive items, opt for just a few higher-quality pieces you can wear over and over. These pieces will last longer, look better and keep your skin from getting irritated. Another option is to opt for non-metal jewelry. You can buy jewelry made of acrylic, ceramic, silicone, and even wood. These materials may not be as durable as metal jewelry but are a good option for more sensitive skin.

3. Care for coated jewelry

One way to keep costs down is to buy jewelry coated in high-quality metal. You have to be careful when buying coated jewelry because over time the coating may rub off and your skin may be exposed to the material underneath, to which you could have a reaction. The best way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to care for your jewelry. Get it cleaned regularly, avoid showering or sleeping in your jewelry and get it recoated on a regular basis.

Can You Recognize These 8 Famous Redheads Without Their Signature Red Hair?

We Love Our Redhead Celebs and Can't Imagine Them Any Other Way!

Hair color is one of our unique identifying features as humans. For those with red hair, it’s more than just a hair color, it’s actually in our genes. People with red hair are often mistaken for other people simply because they also have red hair, or are unrecognizable to even their loved ones if they dye or cover their hair.

Can you recognize these 8 famous redheads without their signature color?

Ed Sheeran: Blonde/Red

Let’s start with an easy one…Ed Sheeran’s hair is already on the lighter side, so making the switch to blonde doesn’t change his look too much.

Marcia Cross: Brown/Red

Known for her red hair, Marcia Cross has actually sported brown hair a time or two in the form of a wig during her cancer treatments. She looks great as a brunette but we can all agree red is her color.

Shaun White: Brown/Red

Pro snowboarder Shaun White is known for his long naturally curly red hair and is barely recognizable without it! In recent years he has cut his hair short, which makes it appear darker, but the red is still here.

Reba McEntire: Blonde/Red

Country queen Reba McEntire isn’t a blonde, but her hair has started to fade with age. We love that it doesn’t stop her from keeping up with her signature red.

Jessica Chastain: Black/Red

Fair skin looks beautiful with dark hair, but Jessica Chastain’s natural red hair really brings out her eyes so we’re glad she loves her red hair as much as we do.

Isla Fisher: Brown/Red

She may be stunning in any hair color but there’s something special about how movie star Isla Fisher looks with her natural red hair.

Rupert Grint: Blonde/Red

Another redhead male with lighter red hair is Rupert Grint. His role as Ron Weasley wouldn’t have been the same if he had sported blonde locks.

Madelaine Petsch: Brown/Red

If there’s one celeb who’s almost unrecognizable without their signature color, it’s Madelaine Petsch. Her long red hair and bold red brows are here to stay and we are so glad.

Why Do Redheads Get Such Dark Under Eye Circles?

Are Your Under Eye Bags Even Associated with Your Red Hair?

Have you ever noticed that your under-eye circles are worse than your non-redhead friends? There’s a reason for that. Let’s face it, being a redhead is always glamorous but it does come with a few downsides. One of the downsides for redheads with is fair skin is the skin is thinner (many call this couperose skin) and shows bruising, veins, and discoloration. This discoloration shows up more in redheads partially because redhead skin can be pale and shows the contrast more. Thinner skin means the blood vessels underneath the skin show through more than on other skin types.

This is also why redheads bruise more easily and bruises may appear darker and more intense.

Dark circles can appear for a number of reasons including age, allergies, dehydration, and genetics. The most common cause of under-eye circles is fatigue. When we are tired, our eyes can get puffy and discolored.

While there isn’t much you can do to keep dark circles from appearing other than keeping a healthy lifestyle, drinking plenty of water, and getting adequate rest, there are a few ways you can help to cover your dark under-eye circles or try to reduce their appearance.

6 Products to Keep Your Red Hair Vibrant

Bring Out Your Red!

Updated: October 30th, 2023

Color-depositing shampoos and tinted glosses are a great way to adjust the color or tone of your hair without dye. People who dye their red hair often use toners to keep the hair from getting brassy or yellow.

Toners can be applied by a stylist to alter the color of the hair, but the toners you will buy in the store are different because they are more of a temporary coating that goes on your hair to give it vibrance, depth, and shine.

The use of toner is a bit different for redheads. Typically redheads both natural and by choice want to keep their hair red or orange. Redhead toners can help to make your hair more vibrant if it’s fading or just a light strawberry blonde color, it can also help to adjust the shade of your red hair in a natural way.

Here are a few of our favorite redhead toning products

1. Overtone Complete System in Ginger

$40

2. dpHUE Gloss+ Semi-permanent Hair Color and Deep Conditioner in Copper or Auburn

Benefits of Face-Steaming for Redheads and How to Do It at Home

Steam your way to better skin!

Ever notice how your skin looks and feels amazing right after a hot shower? That is partly because your skin is fresh and clean, but also because your skin was exposed to an abundance of steam. Facial steaming is a great DIY redhead skincare treatment that can help you get better skin. Here’s everything you need to know about facial steaming for your sensitive skin:

1. The benefits of facial steaming

There are a lot of health and beauty benefits to facial steaming, some of these benefits include:

  • Hydration
  • Cleansing
  • Better Circulation
  • Opens Pores
  • Sinus Congestion
  • Soothing/Relaxing

2. The 411 on steaming if you have sensitive skin

Facial steaming can be used by those with sensitive skin, but it is recommended that you use it in moderation. Those with ultra-dry skin or dry skin conditions should either use very gentle facial steaming techniques or lessen the time. If you have rosacea you may want to skip facial steaming as it can cause temporary redness of the face.

3. Frequency of steaming

It is recommended to do facial steaming no more than once per week for no more than 10 minutes. When you get started, try doing it once a month and then build up to a more frequent schedule. Avoid doing facial steaming less than 24 hours before any big event or night out until you are familiar with how your skin reacts, as it will cause temporary redness.

4. Specific facial steaming techniques

There are a variety of techniques you can use for facial streaming this includes:

  • Professional Face Steaming – Like any other skincare or beauty treatment, facial steaming is something you can go to a professional for.
  • Bowl/Sink Steaming – You can try at home steaming in your sink or a bowl by adding slightly cooled boiling water to your vessel of choice and then holding your head several inches above the water while draped with a towel to trap the steam.
  • Warm Towel Steaming – You can heat water to soak towels and apply them to your face for a direct contact form of facial steaming.
  • Facial Steamer Machine – You can also purchase at-home facial steaming machines to help regulate the temperature and time.

5. After steaming your face, this is what you need to know

Once you’re done steaming, it’s important to be careful with your skin as it will be more sensitive. Since steaming does open up your pores, post steam is a great time to add face creams, serums, or anti-aging products. If nothing else, be sure to apply a moisturizer to lock in hydration and prevent dry skin.

5 Hairstyles To Rock With Curly Red Hair

Rock Your Curly Hair Like a Redhead

If you’re rocking naturally curly red hair, you might be looking for cute new hairstyles that curl friendly. Here are a few of our favorites:

Bangs

One of the hassles of curls can be the amount of hair that falls into your face. Getting bangs is a great way to keep those curls out of your face while creating dimension in the hair. Long shaggy bangs are great because they can be pulled back with the rest of your hair.

Braids

For short or long hair, braids can be a wonderful option for styling curly hair. If your hair is short, try some smaller french braids on the top or side portion of your hair to keep the hair back. If your hair is longer try a single or double french braid, a fishtail braid, or even a braid crown.

Cute Clips

Curly red hair can be hard to manage and style. Try adjusting your hair into a new part or half-back and then adding a cute clip so it will stay all day. This will also help you to keep from adjusting your hair too often which can cause frizz in your curls.

Half Up Half Down

Another great style for hair of all lengths is the half up half down look. This will allow your curls to be shown off while getting the hair out of your face without looking too casual. Try a braid, bun, clip or ponytail to secure the top half of your hair.

Hair Scarf

Add a simple hair scarf to your red curly hair for a plethora of cute styles. You can use a hair scarf as a headband, a ponytail or bun accessory, or just a fun piece to add a pop of color to your hairstyle. Opt for something silky soft to reduce added frizz in your curls.

How to Contour Fair Redhead Skin Without Looking Orange

Sculpt Your Fair Skin to Perfection!

Contouring your face can help to enhance and sculpt your face for more defined redhead beauty features. Contouring redhead skin can be tricky because a lot of contour products are too dark or orange, and can make the skin look muddy. Here are a few tips and tricks for getting the perfect contour (especially if you have fair skin):

1. Prep your skin

A huge part of getting a good finish and staying all day contour for any skin tone is starting with a good base. Start with clean, moisturized skin and then apply primer. Applying a creamy foundation will help the contour to melt into the skin making it blendable and easy to work with. Make sure you blend your foundation fully before starting on your contour.

2. Choose the right color

Picking the right color is key when it comes to contour. There aren’t a lot of great options for fair-skinned people, but you don’t have to settle for something that’s too dark or too orange. A few great contour products for fair skin include:

Redhead Tip: If you’re cool-toned and struggling to find a more taupe bronzer that works for you, try cream eyebrow products intended for light brown brows.

3. Apply lightly and how to apply

If you’ve watched any makeup tutorial videos, you’ve probably seen beauty gurus take a pretty heavy hand with their contour. Getting the right amount of contour takes practice. If you apply too much product, you’ll end up muddying your makeup and it won’t look good.

Use the graph below to determine where to apply the dark contour and light contour. Contour products go a long way, so start light, blend and then apply a little more as needed. Over time you’ll start to learn how much works for your skin.

4. Blend, blend, blend

The key to making your contour look natural is blending. You want to blend and blend and when you think you’re done, blend some more. Blending will help the product meld with your skin and create a flawless finish. Not enough blending can easily leave you with harsh lines, uneven tone, and cakey makeup.

5. Highlight and brighten

Contouring your face will darken some areas to help create depth. To create the full effect, you need to lighten and brighten other areas of your face. This can be achieved with concealer or highlighter. Focus on the highest points of the face to help draw the eye there.

How Redheads Can Maintain and Rock Bangs

Keep up the maintenance and you'll learn to love your bangs

Having bangs is super fun until you realize they require more upkeep and maintenance than your regular hair. Don’t let that keep you from getting bangs though! Here are a few tips on how redheads can maintain your bangs so they always look great.

Get your bangs on a wash schedule

Since bangs hang in your face and they can get oily or dirty looking before the rest of your hair. Instead of wasting time washing your hair daily, try washing just your bangs if they need a refresh and it’s not a wash day. You can use dry shampoo or pin your hair back and wash just your bangs in the sink. Do a quick blow dry and they will be good as new!

Keep up with bang trims

If you like your bangs a certain length, make sure you keep up with bang trims. Lots of salons will do free (or really inexpensive) bang trims for their regular clients, so take advantage of that. Never trim your bangs at home.

Reduce use of hot tools

Keep your bangs looking nice by reducing the amount of heat you use on them. When you blow-dry or if you plan to use other hot tools, make sure to apply for heat protection.

READ: The Power of Air Drying & Skipping The Blow Drying Process

Invest in rollers

A great way to style your bangs without heat is rollers. They can help give your bangs volume and body while keeping them from being damaged. They can also be put in while you do your makeup or skincare so your bangs are ready to go when you are. Try different sizes until you find the one that works for you.

‘Redhead Friendly’ approved hair rollers: Self Grip Hair Rollers Set

Try new styles

If you like bangs but aren’t loving your current ones, try different styles. Try something like long curtain bangs, micro bangs, or even a parted wispy bang. Just because one style of bang isn’t for you doesn’t mean bangs aren’t for you!
