How to Care for Coarse Red Hair: A Complete Guide

Learn to Tame the Mane

Updated: October 31st, 2023

Did you know on average redheads have fewer strands than other hair colors, but the strands are thicker which leads to redheads actually having thicker hair? In addition to being thick, many redheads struggle with coarse hair. But first, let’s clear up the common confusion: there is a difference between ‘coarse’ and ‘thick.’ While ‘coarse’ or ‘fine’ describes the size of each strand, ‘thick’ describes the density of hair follicles on your scalp, or how closely together hair grows. Thick hair has more follicles per square inch than sparser hair.

If you’ve got coarse red hair and you’re sick of the everyday struggle that comes with it, check out these tips for taming the mane:

READ: 5 Expert Tips On Combatting Unruly Red Hair

1. Change up your wash method

For us, first on the list is to stop using traditional shampoo. Coarse red hair tends to dry out, especially if it’s curly. Detergents found in conventional shampoos strips hair of its natural oils, and further dry hair out. When learning how to take care of curly hair, or any other hair type, try eliminating traditional shampoo altogether.

Instead, consider alternative washing methods such as the low-poo method that limits the use of detergent; the no-poo method that avoids it altogether; or co-washing – short for conditioner-only washing, which means using oils in conditioner to dissolve your natural oil.

If you are looking for a redhead-approved shine shampoo to add to your routine, look no further:

Finally Glossy® Shine & Luminosity Shampoo for Redheads

It took many years to custom-make the Finally Glossy® formula and we’re so excited for redheads to enjoy it. We’re thrilled to release another clean redhead beauty product. It is paraben-free, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, petroleum-free, mineral-oil, and vegan. It also contains no perfume, is free of gluten and is silicone-free, phthalate-free, formaldehyde-free and cocamidopropyl betaine-free. This clean formula is formulated with Vitamin B3, olive oil, coconut oil and green tea.

2. Condition, condition, condition!

Coarse hair soaks up moisture like nobody’s business. That’s why the best way to treat it is with conditioning products. Try using a heavy-duty conditioner as part of your routine as well as deep conditioning masks and leave-in conditioners. We frequently feature conditioners in the H2BAR Box because we know redheads want to tame their manes.

3. Change your pillowcases

Coarse hair can end up frizzy and messy quickly. Combat this by swapping to silk or satin pillowcases so your hair stays smooth while you sleep.

4. Avoid alcohol-based products

When hair products contain alcohol, they tend to dry your hair out, which is the opposite of what you want. Look for products that are alcohol-free.

5. Limit heat styling

One great thing about coarse hair is it holds hairstyle well. Use this to your advantage by rocking next-day hair and limiting your heat styling. Let your hair air dry if you can, or use a low/no heat setting. Additionally, you will want to limit the amount you’re using hot tools like curling irons and flat irons.

6. Pick the right hair towel

When drying your hair opt to use a microfiber towel! Introducing the How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads. Because wet hair is at its most vulnerable, this custom microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your red hair and dries it quickly, all while protecting it from stretching and breakage. This design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place. Your hair journey starts here, redheads.

6. Keep it trimmed

Split ends can make coarse hair look worse, so be sure to keep up on your regular trims to keep it looking healthy as can be.

7. Embrace botanicals

Look for conditioning and styling products that contain these hair-friendly oils to keep your strands well-fed, and help fight frizz and dryness: J

Jojoba oil

Primrose oil

Sunflower oil

Olive oil

Avocado oil

Sweet almond oil

7 Tips for Growing Out Your Red Hair

Grow Your Red Mane

Updated: October 31st, 2023

Growing out your red hair takes time and patience, but there are a few ways to help speed up the growth and keep it healthy during the process.

Here are 7 of our favorite ‘redhead friendly’ tips for growing out your red hair:

1. Massage your scalp

Massaging your scalp can help to promote blood flow which will help with hair growth. Try using a scalp massager in the shower while you shampoo.

If you are looking for a redhead-approved shampoo to add to your routine, look no further:

Finally Glossy® Shine & Luminosity Shampoo for Redheads

It took many years to custom-make the Finally Glossy® formula and we’re so excited for redheads to enjoy it. We’re thrilled to release another clean redhead beauty product. It is paraben-free, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, petroleum-free, mineral-oil, and vegan. 2. Apply oils that promote growth

Jojoba, argan, and castor are a few of the oils you can apply to your scalp to help promote hair growth. Not only will they help with growth, but they will also make your hair healthy, soft, and shiny. Create a mask with the oils and apply 1-2 per month.

3. Take hair growth supplements*

Hair growth supplements* don’t work for everyone, but they might work for you. Multi-vitamins and Biotin are both great options for promoting hair growth. Be sure to consult your doctor before starting any new supplements.

4. Hold off on the heat

Using heat won’t slow down hair growth, but it will dry your red hair out and cause damage and breakage. For healthier hair during the growth process, avoid using hair dryers or hot tools.

5. Get regular trims

While having your hair trimmed won’t help it grow, it will keep it looking healthy and will help you to avoid split ends from spreading upwards.

6. Be mindful of your diet

Make sure your diet is high in fiber, nutrients, and biotin*. Foods with these properties will help promote growth and healthier, shinier hair. Additionally, be sure you are meeting your water intake needs daily.

7. Be patient

At the end of the day, hair growth will take time, so be patient. Try and enjoy your red hair at the length it is now. If you want long hair fast, try getting red hair extensions.

Redheads: What Are Your Freckles Trying to Tell You?

Freckles Can Help Keep you Safe

Many redheads are blessed with freckles, and as much as we love them, they are caused by exposure to the sun. This exposure isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to be mindful of. First things first, freckles are normal. But, learning to keep an eye eye on our freckles is part of being a healthy redhead. Here’s what your freckles are telling you:

1. Freckles appear when melanin builds under the skin.

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. The more melanin in your body, the darker your skin will be. The human body produces melanin to protect your skin from the sun, which is why freckles appear or become more prominent when you are exposed to the sun.

2. Since freckles are the first sign of sun exposure for many redheads, if your body is starting to produce more freckles, that is your way of knowing you may need more sun protection or a higher SPF.

Freckles do not mean you have sun damage or that you are at risk for skin cancer, but It’s important to keep an eye on your freckles to see if they change or grow.

3. Freckles can sometimes be mistaken for sunspots, which unlike freckles do not fade or disappear on their own.

Additionally, it’s important to keep an eye out for moles or other skin marks that may be hiding among your freckles. If you do see something odd, speak with your dermatologist to be on the safe side. The warning signs include (commonly known as ABCDE’s):

ASYMMETRY: When the halves of a spot don’t match up, it may be a sign of irregular cells.

BORDER: Malignant moles tend to have uneven, notched, or bumpy edges.

COLOR: Inconsistent color in the mole signals a possible issue.

DIAMETER: Anything bigger than 1/4 inch could be cancerous.

EVOLVING:  and remember to always wear adequate sun protection and SPF even if it’s not sunny out.

6 Areas to Apply Concealer on Your Redhead Skin

Apply Your Concealer Like a Pro

Concealer is a great way to brighten the face, add a lifting effect, and cover any pesky blemishes. Applying your concealer to the right areas on your redhead skin can have a big impact on how your makeup looks. Here are the correct areas to apply your concealer.

1. Under Eyes

There are a lot of methods for applying concealer under the eyes. The best method for providing both coverage and lift is to apply your concealer in two areas. First, apply a small amount to the inner corner of the eye and just under the inner corner to cover any dark circles. Then apply an angled line from the outer corner of the eye towards the temple to create that lifted effect.

2. Brow Bone

If you wish to accentuate your brow bone you can apply a small amount of concealer under the brow at the furthest side of the eye. This can be especially beneficial if you want some definition between your brow and your eye shadow.

READ: How To Use Concealer To Achieve Perfect Redhead Brows

3. Bridge of Your Nose

Elongate and slim the nose with a small line of concealer down the bridge stopping about ¼ inch before the tip. To accentuate the tip leave a space and then apply a small dot on the tip of the nose.

4. Cupids Bow

Applying concealer to your cupid’s bow can help to accentuate the lips and make them look fuller. Be cautious not to apply too much as you don’t want your entire upper lip covered in concealer.

5. Forehead and Chin

If you wish to add definition to the forehead and chin, you can apply a small amount in the center of the forehead and/or chin and blend outwards.

6. Blemishes

Cover any pesky pimples with a little dot of concealer, and then blend out the edges. Apply more as needed to cover the entire blemish. Be sure to use a concealer close to your foundation shade for large blemishes so as to not draw more attention to them. For particularly red blemishes, try a color-correcting concealer.

In the photo, Archie is tending to the family’s adorable flock of chickens. The photo shows the back of Archie’s head, which is looking quite coppery!

When Archie was born he didn’t have much hair but over time his hair has started to look redder and redder. So will young Archie have red hair like his dad? When Prince Harry was little, he wasn’t as red as he is now. In his early years, Prince Harry looked quite like a blonde, but the red came in during his tween and teen years.

5 Ways Redheads Can Make Sure Nude Lipstick Won’t Wash Them Out

The Perfect Nude Lipstick is a Redhead Staple!

    Updated: September 27, 2023

Nude lipstick is the perfect way to finish off any redhead makeup look and it’s a safe bet no matter what you are wearing. For redheads, choosing the right nude shade is super important because choosing the wrong color can leave you looking washed out. Here are a few tips on how to pick the perfect nude lipstick to complement your redhead complexion.

Looking for the perfect nude lipstick to go with your red hair? Check these out!

How to be a Redhead Finally Bold® Lipsticks

Yes, you heard it right. Finally Bold® is clean, cruelty-free, vegan and made in the USA. Discover three shades made for redheads. Shop now.

    1. Go for warm undertones

A beige or cool-toned nude lipstick is going to make your lips look dead and lifeless. Pull your natural flush with a color that has warm undertones. Pink undertones look especially nice on redheads as they imitate the natural pink of your lips and help you have a more natural-looking lip.

    2. Consider your natural lip color

If you’re fair-skinned, you might be drawn towards very light nude lipsticks, but they might not always work for you. Take into account your natural lip color, and pick something that is around that same shade for a more natural look.

    3. Use a lip liner

Using lip liner to help create dimension and a color gradient is a great way to get a nude lip that complements your redhead skin tone. Make sure your lip liner is in the same color family as your lipstick and don’t stray more than 1-2 shades away from your main lip color for a cohesive look.

    4. Skip the matte

Matte lipstick is great, but it can leave your lips looking chalky and dull which makes them look like they blend in with your skin. Opt for something with a little more depth like a satin finish to help your lips look more alive.

    5. Try a gloss

A nude gloss is a great way to give your lips a subtle tint with added shine.
