Hard Water’s Effects On Your Red Hair: Here’s How To Stop It

Don't Let Hard Water Ruin Your Red Hair

When water contains a high amount of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium, it is known as hard water. Hard water can lead to buildup in sinks, showers, tubs, and faucets. In fact, these minerals are so common that 85% of American homes have hard water. Additionally, hard water is not great for your gorgeous red hair. Hard water minerals reduce the effectiveness of things like shampoo and conditioner which may prevent your hair from receiving the moisture it needs.

Those who have hard water in their homes often suffer from dry, itchy scalps and dandruff as well as breakage, thinning, and dullness in their hair. If you have hard water, don’t worry there are a few things you can do to keep your red hair healthy

Do a vinegar rinse

Doing a vinegar rinse can help to lower the pH of the hair and cleanse the scalp to reduce build-up. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a great option for this. You can make a DIY vinegar rinse. Combined (preferably) filtered water with ACV: ~2 tbsp ACV : 1c water. The acetic acid in ACV removes product build-up and even treats dandruff, leaving your red hair healthy and gorgeous.

Use a clarifying shampoo

A good way to remove the build-up from your hair is with a clarifying shampoo. Use it once a week to keep hair fresh and free of buildup. Since the clarifying shampoo will be stripping your hair, it’s important to make sure you use a moisturizing conditioner or leave-in treatment as well.

Deep condition

Restoring the moisture in your hair is a must, so use a leave-in deep conditioner or hydrating treatment on a regular basis. Opt for something with a low pH that helps lock the moisture in the hair shaft and keeps it nice and hydrated.

Get a water softener

The best way to reduce hard water damage is to get a water softener. You can install a shower head that will filter the water so the minerals are removed by the time it reaches your hair. Alternatively, you can install a water softening system for your whole home. This option will be much pricier but will solve the issue for all bathrooms and sinks.

7 Easy Redhead Hairstyles to Wash Your Hair Just Twice in a Week

The Guide to Styling Your Red Hair for One Week

Getting tired of your same old redhead hairstyles? Here’s a week’s worth of red hairstyles to inspire you. Plus, these styles only require you to wash your hair twice in a week!

Monday: Sleek and straight

Kick-off your week with wash day on Monday, and blow out your hair. A straight blowout will take less time and you’ll be all set for the week ahead. Reduce heat damage by skipping the straightener or just using it on the areas that really need the help.

Tuesday: Natural half-up

Your straight hair is bound to have fallen a bit, but embrace the natural texture while rocking the last of that blowout. Put hair half up in a cute bun or clip to polish off the look.

Wednesday: Textured waves

Third-day hair is perfect for adding some texture. Try adding loose beachy waves and topping it off with a little dry shampoo for volume

Thursday: Braid

Keep some of your texture intact with a cute braid to finish off this wash cycle. Try a fishtail or French braid or even double Dutch braids for a cute, polished look.

Friday: Blow out

It’s wash day again, so give yourself a beautiful blowout for the weekend. Use a round brush to give yourself volume and body and big bouncy hair.

Saturday: Big bouncy curls

Embrace your second-day blowout and touch it up by adding some big bouncy curls. This will help to keep the body while adding some texture and a fun look for any Saturday plans you’ve got.

Sunday: Ponytail

Brush out your next-day curls and pop your hair into a ponytail. A slicked-back ponytail is a perfect way to end the week. This casual look will get you through Sunday looking effortless and chic.

Pomegranate Benefits for Redhead Skin No One Told You About

It's More Than Just a Tasty Snack

Pomegranates. One word comes to mind: yummy! It’s a delicious wintertime fruit many of us enjoy, but did you know pomegranates actually have benefits for your redhead skin? Although pomegranates are great for eating, they can also be found in a number of skincare products too.

What are the benefits of pomegranate?

1. Helps promote skin elasticity: Pomegranates have plenty of vitamins and nutrients to keep our bodies healthy. They contain fiber, protein, vitamins C & K, folate, and potassium. Vitamin C is a necessary vitamin for the body’s production of collagen, which promotes elasticity in the skin to keep it youthful

2. Reduces signs of aging: Pomegranates contain punicalagin, which is a potent antioxidant found in both the juice and the peel. Pomegranates actually contain more antioxidants than red wine and green tea. Antioxidants are key in reducing signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines and protecting the skin from sun damage

3. Great for acne-prone skin: Another wonderful property of pomegranates is their anti-inflammatory properties. This can help with reducing redness and swelling in the face, especially for those with acne-prone/sensitive/ irritated redhead skin. Additionally, pomegranate has antibacterial properties to help fight inflammation and infection.

4. Hydrates skin: Pomegranate seed oil is extremely hydrating and can penetrate even the driest of skin. In addition to moisturizing the surface-level skin, pomegranate seed oil can help to cleanse the skin of dirt and impurities.

3 Must-Try Brands for Ultra Sensitive Redhead Skin

The perfect products for even the most sensitive of skin

Most redheads have sensitive skin and need to use products intended for their skin type. Many redheads have extremely sensitive skin, and even some ‘sensitive skin’ products don’t cut it for them. If you’ve got super-sensitive skin, here are 3 brands you need to try. These brands cater towards the most sensitive of skin and you’ll probably be able to find products that work for you!

1. California Baby

You might not have considered trying a brand that was intended for babies, but their products are meant to be safe for little ones and those with sensitive skin. Believe it or not, babies suffer from a lot of the same skin issues adults with sensitive skin do. Things like dry skin, eczema and need protection from the sun are universal regardless of age. Some of California Baby’s best products for sensitive skin of all ages include:

California Baby Calendula Cream

$36

California Baby No Fragrance Super Sensitive SPF 30+ Sunscreen

$44

2. Cetaphil

One of the most recommended brands by dermatologists is Cetaphil. Their products are formulated for people who have sensitive skin and suffer from things like dryness, irritation, rough or uneven skin, tight skin, and a weakened skin barrier. Some of Cetaphils best products for sensitive skin include:

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

$12

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream

$15

3. Elta MD

Another brand that is highly recommended by dermatologists is Elta MD. Their products are created to protect the skin while nourishing and moisturizing. They have a number of products that are safe for sensitive skin including cleansers, moisturizers, and multiple SPF products. Some of Elta MD’s best products for sensitive skin include:

Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

5 Ways to Use Your ‘Redhead Friendly’ Lipstick as a Cheek Tint

Get a Rosy Cheeks in a Pinch

Updated: September 27, 2023

Forgetting your blush at home, or running out completely can be a huge bummer. Did you know you can actually use your lipstick as a cheek tint? It’s a great way to get a rosy flush when you’re in a pinch and get a cohesive look.

Here’s everything you need to know:

1. Stick to warm nudes and pinks

This might be obvious, but your dark lipsticks aren’t ideal for this. Stick to warm neutral tones or pinks. If you’re feeling brave you could even try a tiny bit of red lipstick, but be sure to blend thoroughly and don’t use too much.

Looking for the perfect lipstick? Check these out!

How to be a Redhead Finally Bold® Lipsticks

Yes, you heard it right. Finally Bold® is clean, cruelty-free, vegan and made in the USA. Discover three shades made for redheads. Shop now.

2. Any finish is fine

Like cream blush, different finishes of lipstick will give you different outcomes, but they all work as cheek tints! Metallics and shimmer lipsticks might not work the best, but if you’re going for a super glowy look you might want that.

3. Use your fingers or a beauty blender

Don’t apply your tube of lipstick straight to your skin. Wash your hands thoroughly and then apply a little to the back of the hand. Use your finger or a beauty blender to help blend it into the cheek just like you would cream blush.

4. Blend, blend, blend

Lipstick is meant to be a little more saturated in color than cream blush, so make sure you blend until you get a really nice finish. The last thing you want is patchy pink cheeks.

5. Use a multi-stick product

There are many lip and cheek products out on the market. We love Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50 and HAN Skincare Cosmetics All Natural Multistick.

Redhead By-Choice? Here’s How to Make it Look More Natural

Get More Natural Looking Red Hair

Not everyone can be born a redhead. In fact, less than 2% of the population has red hair. If you love the red look and want to dye your hair red, you might want a more natural look. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you achieve that natural redhead look.

1. Consider your undertones

There are a lot of different shades of red hair. Most natural redheads have a shade that complements their skin undertones. Consider your undertones and try to find natural redheads with similar features so you can see what colors will look best on you.

2. Go to a professional

There’s a reason people say “you can’t get that color from a bottle”. Coloring your hair to a natural red color can be very difficult. A trained stylist can help you get as close as possible without damaging your hair.

READ: Opinion: It’s Okay to Dye Your Natural Red Hair, Regardless of What People Say

3. Try coloring your hair with henna

Either at home or with a stylist, you can color your hair with henna for a more natural red look. Be sure to strand test your hair to see how it reacts, and be cautious when using henna on dyed hair as it may turn a strange color.

4. Keep up on maintenance

Your roots will give you away if you don’t keep up with them. Schedule a regular root touchup with your stylist so you can make sure you’ve got them covered.

5. Change your eyebrows

Most redheads have blonde eyebrows, so if you’ve got dark brown brows people will know you’re not a redhead. Consider bleaching your brows and either tinting them or using a brow gel like Finally Have Brows

6. Choose the right color

If you are using a dye from your local drugstore, consider this guide when choosing the right color.

8 Redhead-Specific Tips for Longer, Stronger Nails

Strengthen and Grow Your Nails, Crimson Beauties!

Fingernails and toenails are made from skin cells. And since redheads usually have very sensitive skin, nails can be sensitive too. Don’t forget the signs of brittle, breaking nails — it is your body’s way of seeking attention. If you’re struggling with getting long, strong natural nails, here are a few redhead-specific tips to help you out.

    1. MC1R gene causes sensitivities — so skip the gel and acrylics.

The MC1R gene influences the color of hair and pale skin shade. This causes sensitivities to the sun, and also skin sensitivities in general. Don’t make it worse by adding gel and acrylics to the equation. These two treatments can actually weaken your nails, and the added acetone to remove them is no help either. The idea is to work with your genetics, not against them.

    2. Stay hydrated

You might be wondering why and how this is redhead-specific. Drinking water is something everyone needs to do. Well, yes, but redheads have what is known as couperose skin. It means redheads have thinner skin which makes it more sensitive. The first step to keeping skin/nails strong is to stay hydrated. It really is the key to being healthy in your hair, skin, and nails.

    3. Moisturize

If you’re an H2BAR Box subscriber, we preach the importance of moisturizer for redheads. Our sensitive skin needs the armor! Applying moisturizer to the hands and nails will help keep the cuticle and surrounding area soft and nourished. Additionally, you can apply oils to help the nails stay strong and healthy.

    4. Ditch the acetone

Acetone is NOT a redhead-approved product. This harsh chemical can easily remove nail polish, but at what cost? It’s actually drying out your nails and making them weak which can cause brittle, peeling nails. Opt for an acetone-free nail polish remover instead. And don’t forget about the sensitivity of the skin underneath the nail. Chemicals can really disrupt this and cause a reaction; something we never want.

    5. Keep nails trimmed

Just like our red hair, keep your nails trimmed. If your nails are weak and long, they have a better chance of snagging or breaking. Consider keeping them trimmed on the shorter side while they regain their strength and then start growing them back little by little with frequent trims in between to ensure your nails are as healthy as can be.

    6. Eat a protein and calcium-rich diet

Does anyone remember when HowtobeaRedhead.com first launched in 2011, we had a healthy living section. True story. It has since been revamped under the Beauty category, but we strongly recommend a good diet to keep red hair and nails at their best. We all know vitamins, such as calcium, helps you have strong bones, and it helps you have strong nails too! Eating a diet that’s high in protein and calcium will help your nails grow faster and be stronger.

    7. Take supplements*

There are a lot of supplements and vitamins you can take to help with nail growth including prenatal vitamins, biotin, and hair & nails supplements. This is the secret behind many long, thick red manes. Consult your doctor to find out which one is right for you.

    8. Use base and top coats

When you get a manicure or do one at home, make sure you’ve always got a redhead-approved base and topcoat. These two extra layers will help to give your nails an added line of defense and keep them from breaking or peeling.

*Always discuss with your doctor before incorporating any new supplements into your diet.

Natural vs. Unscented Fragrances: What Redheads Need To Know

    Which One Should You Choose?

Most redheads have sensitive skin, which may not take kindly to heavily fragranced products. Also, redheads are known to have their own scent naturally. Because of these facts, many redheads might opt for something fragranced naturally rather than with a chemical perfume. We wanted to get the truth about natural and synthetic fragrances, so we went to the source. Emily Fletcher, the founder of the Australian Clean + Conscious Awards, gave her expert commentary on the truth about natural fragrances.

READ: 7 Vegan Fragrances for Redheads

H2BAR: What does natural actually mean when it comes to body care product fragrances?

EF: Natural fragrances, as defined by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) must be plant-derived from aromatic natural raw materials. They must be physically obtained from plants through mechanical extraction (through cold pressing for example) or distillation (via water or steam.) They cannot be chemically altered or made from artificial materials.

H2BAR: What is the difference between natural and synthetic fragrances?

EF: Natural fragrances are beautiful, however, the scent doesn’t last as long as synthetic. Also, natural extracted scents can vary according to environmental changes and harvest variation.

Synthetic fragrances are lab-created and designed to mimic natural scents. There are thousands of fragrance chemicals that are used in different combinations to create different notes. Synthetic fragrances are more potent and contain added fixatives – often endocrine-disrupting phthalates, to make the scent last longer.

Phthalates have been associated with a whole host of negative health effects including direct links with asthma, low sperm counts, and genital malformation in young male babies. They have also been associated with endometriosis, diabetes, and thyroid issues.

H2BAR: So it seems like natural fragrances are the way to go, especially if you suffer from any sensitivities. What about fragrance-free or unscented products?

EF: Fragrance-free means no additional fragrances have been added to the formulation to make the product smell a certain way, or mask the scent of the ingredients the product contains. This means the product may still have a scent.

Unscented refers to a product that may have had masking scents added to it, in order to try to create a product that doesn’t smell like anything. These may contain synthetic fragrances.
