The Rock it like a Redhead Events: What They’re All About (PHOTOS)

How to be a Redhead is excited to present the 2015 Rock it like a Redhead National Beauty Tour.

Tickets for Austin and Nashville are now for sale. Thousands more of you are waiting on Seattle, Chicago and NYC tickets, and they will be available soon! Before tickets go on sale, our team works hard to secure the perfect venue, sponsors and specific details. So, hold on tight if you’re waiting. If you already have a ticket in hand, congratulations! We can’t wait to celebrate being a redhead with you.

If you still haven’t purchased your tickets for Austin, click here. And, don’t forget to take advantage of the $39 Early Bird special for Nashville by clicking here.

When Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti, sisters & co-founders of How to be a Redhead, attended beauty events, they always felt singled out because most makeup and hair products did not cater to redheads. And, they thought most events were not upbeat enough; there usually was a room of beauty booths and women un-interested in learning about another product line. So, they began producing Rock it like a Redhead Events (the photos below were shot at the 2013 event in NYC) to change all of the above, while bringing HowtobeaRedhead.com to life in an incredibly fun and entertaining way.

The #1 question we get asked is, “What are the events all about?” There is so much love & detail put into each event, so we wanted to give you a breakdown of what they’re all about, and what to expect when you attend.

1. Upon entering the event, there will be a red carpet, photographers and local media waiting to take your photo.

2. Many women are “dressed to impress,” and although we suggest it, we highly encourage every attendee to wear what they’re comfortable in. The entire event tour’s mission is to empower redhead women to feel confident, look amazing and rock their beauty. It is your night to wear what makes you feel beautiful!

3. It all begins with the beauty session. Austin’s Hair Sponsor is Kenra Professional. You will find them providing hair consultations and touchup’s. There will also be skin, makeup & nail sponsors waiting to beautify each woman who walks in the room. VIP ticket holders will enjoy sessions with each sponsor and will have the luxury of enjoying the VIP lounge for relaxation and special gifts.

5. While the beauty event is occurring, there will be entertainment galore. And, there will be passed horderves and complimentary bar services (for those 21+).

6. The evening will then launch into fashion, where we will host 2-3 local fashion brands. The models will be our followers, everyday girls showcasing everyday looks.

7. The entire night will end with a live performance from redhead rockstar, Shayne Leighton. Additional live entertainment may be provided in your city, too. See one of her music videos below:

It’s True! All Redheads Have Rutilism

    By: Brenna Gray

Have you ever had one of those days when you wanted to sleep in and not go to work or school? Or perhaps you just don’t want to hang out with someone, but don’t want to make them upset? Well, next time you want to skip out on something I have the perfect excuse you can use. Say you have Rutilism. Many people will think you’re sick with some sort of horrible disease and beg you to stay home to rest. Only you will know the true meaning behind this mysterious “disease” and get away with it.

Have I frightened you yet or turned you into a hypochondriac? You’re probably wondering what Rutilism is now? No need to fear. It’s actually quite simple. The definition of Rutilism is the ‘condition of being redheaded’. It also means ‘the presence of infrequent colorings’. The word Rutilism derives from the French language. “Rutilisme–coloration rousse des poils et cheveux” means the red coloration of hair.

It is not an actual disease, but it sure sounds like something scary. I like to joke around with people about it just to see the looks on their faces. Now you may think I’m telling you to lie, but the truth is all redheads do have this ‘condition’. You are, in fact, always telling the truth. Having them believe it’s an actual illness can get away with hooky — well I can’t help you there. It’s worth a shot though.

Natural Tips for Keeping Red Hair Vibrant

    Updated: May 25th, 2023

Natural redheads worry about their hair fading as well as ‘by choice’ redheads who are dyeing (pun intended) to keep their locks vibrant. There are many heavy chemical-based products on the market that can help prevent fading, but here at How to be a Redhead, we’re always pushing for our redhead beauties to go the natural route. Luckily, many companies are creating ‘all natural’ hair products to keep our locks gorgeous, but how about actual natural products that can be found right in your kitchen?

Jamie Millmather, a Master Stylist at LaLaLuxe salon in Providence, RI knows all about keeping red hair super shiny and full of vibrancy. “We all know the story about red hair, although it’s beautiful it’s the hardest color to keep,” says Millmather. “Maintenance is key to keeping hair color vibrant and healthy, for both natural and dyed redheads.”

READ: Keeping Red Hair Vibrant Without Hair Dye

Here are Millmather’s top all-natural hair tips:

    1. “If you do get your hair colored, that same day you go to the salon, do an at-home hot oil treatment. You can use Extra Virigin Olive Oil or a treatment from the drugstore. Put it on, wrap your hair in plastic wrap, and rinse with cold water. This will help seal the cuticle and prevent excess color fade in the first shampoos.” This is also a great tip for natural redheads as the hot oil protects and seals the hair.

    2. “Repetitive hair masks are a must! Keeping your hair properly balanced with protein and moisture will ensure that your hair color stays vibrant. When it comes to at home hair care treatments you have more options then you think. As far as a deep conditioning, you can use half an avocado puréed, olive oil or mayonnaise to get your locks re-hydrated just be sure to wrap your hair in plastic wrap. If shine is what you are looking for, look no further than your fridge and do a beer rinse! It gives hair great shine, and I would recommend a light beer for this type of mask.”

5 Makeup Products Every Redhead Needs in Her Makeup Bag

Ladies, as you know, being a redhead is fabulous! There is nothing like the show-stopping vibrant tresses we rock day in and day out. Although our hair takes front and center, our makeup is the accent. I am a self-confessed makeup addict, and I have a few staples that I do not leave home without.

WATCH: Redhead Makeup Tips for Blonde Eyelashes and Eyebrows

Here are my five must-have ‘redhead friendly’ products:

    1. Amazing Cosmetics Concealer

This is the holy grail for the fair complexioned. It is light enough to blend in (no yellow or orange hues here) with our natural coloring, but opaque enough to cover up any stubborn under eye circles or the errant blemish that tries to ruin your day! I wear the shade “fair” but they have a ton of shades for concealer, so there’s one for every skin tone. Bonus, it’s water resistant, so it has some serious staying power.

    2. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pencil in ‘Caramel’

They say your eyes are the windows to your soul, but your eyebrows really help define the entire shape of your face. After years of searching, I found this brow pencil from Anastasia and it actually works with my fair skin and red hair! Even before I put on any other eye makeup, this brow pen gives great shape and definition without looking fake. This is a true ‘redhead friendly’ product!

    3. L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara

I have tried nearly every mascara on the market, and nothing beats this oldie-but-goodie for me. As a natural redhead, my eyelashes are (you guessed it) red. If I don’t get the right coverage on my lashes it looks weird and doesn’t create the beautiful look I’m trying to accomplish. A good mascara is huge in the world of a redhead. I have found this mascara to not only cover extremely well but also provides enough volume and length with a quick swipe. I try new mascaras when they hit the market, but I always come back to this one.<

    4. MAC Cosmetics ‘Gingerly’ Blush

Not only is the name fabulous, but this blush is the perfect shade for redheads! It provides enough color to stand out, but not so much that it draws from the hair. It is also quite buildable, so if you want more color and a bit more drama, you can achieve that. This blush is beautiful and compliments a fair complexion wonderfully!

    5. Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15

Ladies, this is hands down, the best-colored lip balm I have ever found. It’s luxurious and feels amazing on. It also gives a beautiful sheer amount of color to your lips which is perfect for every day. Lipsticks change with the outfit and event, but a good lip tint is a staple.

Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist Behind Christina Hendricks’ Mad Men Looks

How many of you have marveled over Joan Holloway’s (Christina Hendricks’ character) hairstyles in Mad Men? Us too. We had the opportunity to speak candidly with Terrie V. Owen, one of the hair-styling geniuses behind the show. She told us about her start in the industry, some quick and easy tips on how to rock retro hair, and how to perfect the classic ‘Joan from Mad Men‘ look.

H2BAR: You’ve worked with the best of the best in Hollywood. How did you get started?

TO: I started in salons and training with some amazing  people from Vidal Sassoon in London. When I got on the floor as a stylist, I met a client who was looking for someone to work on a theatrical production in New York City. The project ended up being a major Broadway show! I had no idea what I was doing and an amazing hairstylist named Russell Smith took me under his wing, and mentored me on how to do wigs, period styling, character work quick changes.. oh, my! So much! I then met another stylist in the theatre and opera business and got invaluable training with him as well. Afterwards, I went on to become the wig mistress for the theatrical shows that came to The Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and LA Opera in Los Angeles. While I was there, I met hairstylists who recommended me for TV work and feature films. It’s been 25 years now!

H2BAR: What a story! It has all brought you to this point. We’re sure you love working on set. What’s your favorite part?

CHRISTINA HENDRICKS at Promo Shoot for Mad Men Season 5TO: Collaborating with actors, directors and costume designers. It takes a village! I love reading a great script and bringing the people on the page to life.

H2BAR: Speaking of bringing characters to life. We always say, for years to come women everywhere will try to replicate Joan’s classic hair from Mad Men! How did the look first come about?

TO: I wasn’t there for Season 1, but I do know that I always wanted to channel a bit of Bridget Bardot. So when I met Christina, I envisioned a redheaded Bridget Bardot, if you will. The creator of Mad Men, Matt Weiner, had a very big say in in the look of the show. He has a great appreciation for the 1960’s esthetic, so when it came to hair, makeup and wardrobe nothing was left to chance. We all studied the time period and would always look to real people from the time to see what they would have actually done with their hair, makeup or wardrobe. Thankfully with the internet, and periods films and tv, there’s many visual resources for hair inspiration.

H2BAR: Absolutely. Any films or TV shows in particular?

TO: One of my film favorites for inspiration is Blowup from 1966. I wanted to convey the stylish and real esthetic of a high end Madison Avenue advertising agency, and what a working woman in the 60’s may have looked like. Not to mention a strong  woman who uses her “ways” as well as her brains to get what she wants.

H2BAR: How is it working with Christina on set?

TO: She’s lovely! Total pro. And easy to make beautiful.

H2BAR: Can you give us a quick step-by-step how-to get Joan’s look? What tools/ products do you need?

TO: You need: Teasing comb, boar bristle brush, setting spray, texture styling creme & hot rollers.

Photos taken by Owen on set of Mad Men.
Candid how-to photos taken by Owen on set of Mad Men.

    1. This look is for medium length or longer. If you don’t have much hair, don’t be afraid to pop in hair pieces to add bulk and length. Visit your local wig salons and they will give you options for modern, cute hair pieces and extentions.

    2. Always set the hair going back and away from the face. I like to tease each section of hair before I wrap it around the roller.

    3. Use good quality bobby pins, not the shiny ones as they will slip out of the hair. Brush the hair out with a good boar bristle brush, gather it up into a ponytail just above the nape and give it a good twist. Then, start pinning from the nape all the way up the back until you get the desired shape. Pin up any loose ends or leave hanging for more of a modern Bridgett Bardot look.

H2BAR: What is one hair product you can’t live without on set?

TO: I can’t say just one! I do love White Sands Setting Spray and Oribe Texture Spray. I also swear by Oribe Impermeable Hairspray because it holds for days!

H2BAR: For an everyday look, what hair products do you turn to?

TO: Oribe Hair Gold Lust Hair Oil for smooth and perfect hair, SACHAJUAN Texturizing Spray for beach/bed hair, and I love Davines shampoos and conditioners.

    redhead_friendly_products_how_to_be_a_Redhead_davines_oribe_white_sands

H2BAR: We heard you love large size rollers, no smaller than two inches, especially for Christina Hendricks. Can you give our readers some tips on how to properly use them?

TO: I do! Never take a section of hair that’s bigger than the roller. Spray setting lotion only at the root, just one pump and do not spray the whole section. Also, tease the hair at the root BEFORE you put the roller in. This gives you massive volume and holds for hours.

H2BAR: What is your favorite hair trends for 2015?

TO: Short bobs with bangs and modern mullets.

H2BAR: You certainly understand red hair. What is one hair secret every redhead should know?

TO: Use a color-safe sulfate free shampoo, don’t shampoo too often, and don’t shampoo in super hot water.

H2BAR: This year marks the final and complete season of Mad Men. How do you feel about it all coming to an end?

TO: It feels like the end of an era. It’s very sad. The writing on show was so amazing and will go down in TV history. I’m certain of it. Shows like Mad Men are few and far between.

H2BAR: And, how about the rest of 2015? What are you up to?

TO: I am starting season 2 of the sci-fi series Extant with the most amazing actress, Halle Berry. I will be her personal stylist which is very exciting.

10 Ways To Prep Your Skin & Red Hair for 2016 Blizzard

    Pay attention!

Winter storms can wreck havoc on red hair and sensitive skin. If you’re one of the millions of people affected by Jonas the blizzard, you’ll want to pay attention. Tiffany Lewis, a 15-year esthetician veteran and spa owner in St. Charles, IL gives us expert tips for skin and Eufora International Global Educator, Mirza Batanovic, provides great winter hair advice for redheads.

    SKIN:

    1. If not already doing so, begin incorporating a scrub-based, alpha-hydroxy acid cleanser two to three times per week, to assist in breaking down dead, dry skin cells as the air becomes more dry.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Product Recommendation: Mario Badescu Foaming Cleanser or try gentle scrubs like these.

    2. Incorporate two specialized serums: The first for calming and soothing redness. Look for ingredients like B vitamins, allantoin, blue chamomile and organic aloe. The second serum should be designed to bind water moisture to the skin, and should contain emulsifiers like phospholipids and sphingolipids, and also hyaluronic acid to plump the skin and increase water at the cellular level.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Product Recommendation: Odacite ‘GT + L’ Green Tea Lemongrass Facial Serum Concentrate or Tru Skin Naturals Vitamin C Serum

    3. Switch to a thicker, more emollient moisturizer and eye cream to use over the top of the serums and seal them in sufficiently. A quality eye cream and moisturizer designed specifically for sensitive and/or dry skin will do.

READ: The Best Moisturizers for Redheads

    4. Continue with daily sunscreen use.

    5. Maintain proper water hydration, and increase your intake of foods that are high in essential fatty acids, such as avocados, salmon, nuts and green leafy vegetables. Those fatty acids assist in protecting the skin from dehydration.

    6. After the storm passes, receive a professional facial treatment. Seek out a licensed esthetician who customizes facials for sensitive and/or dry skin types, and who will integrate a professional treatment designed to infuse the skin with the necessary hydration to keep it healthy and luminous through the dry fall and winter months.

    7. Switch on your humidifierIt will add moisture back into your skin and will help everything from chapped lips to flaky skin from shaving.

    HAIR:

Batanovic recommends staying away from “excessive heat styling methods, such as curling irons or flat irons during the already cold dryness of winter months since it can actually cause more wreckage than normal.”

Here are Batanovic’s top tips for healthy winter red hair:

    1. If possible, wash hair at night and towel-dry well before going to bed. Avoiding blow dryer use will help hair from losing moisture. If blow-drying is a must, let hair air-dry completely, then perform usual blow out routine. This will cut blow-dry time in half.

    2. During the cold months, stock up on leave-in conditioners and hair serums. Dry and cold weather can extract essential oils and moisture from hair making it brittle and prone to breakage, so it’s important to keep hair hydrated. Batanovic recommends using a product like, Eufora’s Beautifying Elixirs Leave-In Repair Treatment on towel-dried hair since the prep spray delivers inner and outer repair for overworked, dry and damaged hair. Then, enhance shine, tame frizz and lock in moisture by applying Eufora’s Beautifying Elixirs™ Beautifying Serum throughout hair. This lightweight oil improves the health and appearance of hair and instantly creates silky smooth hair.

    3. You do not want your red hair swaying in the cold winter wind. Instead, create a cool braid to keep your hair looking beautiful and protected. After you get the look you desire, apply extra serum to the ends and hairspray to the entire look to lock and protect your hair.

Watch the video below on how to do a fishtail braid:

SAG AWARDS: Get Emma Stone & Julianne Moore’s Hairstyles (And More)

Last night’s 21st SAG Awards presented thirteen awards for acting in film and television focusing on individual performances, the entire ensemble of a drama series and comedy series, and the cast of a motion picture.  The fashion was high and hair was inspiring – especially for the redhead celebrities, Emma Stone & Julianne Moore. Jenny Balding, Cutler/Redken Stylist, shares her favorite styles of the night:

    EMMA STONE:

SAG Award Winner Emma Stone’s simple, sleek ponytail complimented her tuxedo-inspired Dior gown. “This style has become a red carpet favorite and even though this look appears very simple, the attention to detail is what makes Emma look so striking with this side part low ponytail.  This style gives a polished edge to any look as it keeps you looking streamlined.” – Jenny Balding, Cutler/Redken Stylist
    • Start by creating a low side part, focusing on keeping the part very straight.
    • Blow dry hair very smooth and straight and then use a straightening iron throughout to give the ultimate sleek finish.
    • Sweep into a low ponytail at the nape.
    • The attention to detail with the part and the sleek finish really transforms a simple ponytail into a chic style.
    • Finish by misting Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist all over to create the ultimate shine.

Loving Emma Stone’s lipstick color? Her makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, told Glamour Magazine,”We made Emma’s lips a powerful, graphic statement. Her red lip was the only color. I applied Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolus [$7.99,target.com]. The effect wasn’t glossy, but wasn’t matte. It had a creamy, luxe feeling.”

READ: Find the perfect shade of red lipstick for your shade of red hair & skin tone.

    JULIANNE MOORE:

“SAG Award winner Julianne Moore’s effortless polished wave is perfect to take the edge of a very dressed up look while still complementing it beautifully.  There are many versions of a wavy look, but to create this effortless, polished wave you need create a good foundation first to achieve an effortless finish.” – Jenny Balding, Cutler/Redken Stylist
    julianne_moore_wavy_hair_SAG_Awards_2015
    • Start by blow drying her smooth to remove any frizz and promote shine.
    • Create a clean middle part.
    • Use a light weight hairspray to mist each section before using the curling iron.  This will give the right amount of hold and flexibility your need.
    • Use a 1″ 1/2 curling iron and use vertically starting from the mid-length to the ends throughout the whole head.
    • Using a Mason Pearson type brush, brush through the waves to create this polished finish.
    • Finish by misting Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist to create exceptional shine.

      Meet Sierra

As a kid, Sierra was teased about her thick, curly and very red hair. “I felt like I had a horse’s mane, so I felt very different,” says Sierra. “I didn’t want to feel different compared to all the girls with blonde or black hair.” She always thought about dying her hair black. “Anne of Green Gables wanted to have raven locks like Diana, and I felt the same,” she said. But now, she realizes she is different in a good way. Sierra loves her natural red hair, fair skin and freckles, and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

The Lowdown on Dry Skin Brushing for Redheads

      Updated: May 11, 2018

Want to firm your redhead skin and get that circulation flowing? Try dry skin brushing.

Dry brushing is a practice that has been around for thousands of years. It is the process of actually brushing the skin using a bristle dry brush. It is a component of daily healthy living and used to promote detoxification, improve circulation, reduce the appearance of cellulite, stimulate the lymphatic system, and of course, expose supple, soft skin.

Here are four top tips to get started:

      1. Buy a dry brush

Purchase a natural (non-synthetic) bristle brush with a long handle so you can reach all areas of your body.

      2. Brush correctly

Always brush in circular motions towards your heart. This is best for your circulation and the lymphatic system. Circular brushing works best starting at the soles of your feet working up the legs, to the torso, and so on. Avoid the face, areas with lesions and any sensitive areas.

Use enough pressure to have pink skin afterward, but not so much that you are red or in pain. Typically a good dry brush routine can take anywhere from two minutes to twenty minutes.

      3. Keep it up

How often should you dry brush? This really depends on your skin. Many experts recommend at least once or twice a week for optimal results.

      4. Wash your brush after use

After dry brushing, gently scrub your brush with water and soap. Set it out to air dry. You can also soak the dry brush in a bowl filled with water and several drops of tea tree essential oil.

For redheads with dry or sensitive skin, you might be thinking you can’t dry brush. But, it’s to the contrary. Dry brushing is a great way to remove dead skin cells from sensitive skin that otherwise sit on the surface of the skin and perpetuate dryness and sensitivity. If you are applying lotion to dry, un-exfoliated skin it’s simply just sitting on top of dead skin cells and not providing any kind of benefit.
Follow this healthy practice with a warm shower or bath, drinking plenty of water and eating healthy foods. You’ll notice immediately that your body will absorb any lotions or oils quickly, and your skin’s texture will vastly improve. If you are heading out to enjoy the sunshine, be sure to liberally apply sunscreen to protect your newly exposed skin cells.

Are Redheads More Attractive To Bugs? Lindsay Lohan Contracts Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus

Lindsay Lohan was just released from a London hospital and is still battling a mosquito-borne virus contracted during a holiday trip to Bora-Bora. The virus is called Chikungunya and according to the World Health Organization, as noted by Page Six, it is transmitted through mosquito bites and causes fever, joint pain, fatigue and a rash. It is sometimes mistaken for dengue. There is no cure; joint pain can last for months.

As a natural redhead, Lindsay Lohan could be more attractive to the pesky insects than other hair colors. We consulted with Dr. De Fiori, a dermatologist from the Rosacea Treatment Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. “This isn’t a universal finding, however those with red hair tend to have fairer skin, and fairer skin is more easily aggressed in general,” says De Giori.”And this is not just to mosquito bites, but to any potential irritant, such as glycolic and lactic acids in skincare items.”

“I do not think there is any scientific validation that the skin of those with red hair is more susceptible to being bitten by mosquitos, however, redheads are more prone to more obvious inflammatory reactions, like redness and is generally more sensitive,” De Girori says. “This means redheads could be more prone to burning and stinging sensations. This greater sensitivity is paired with a greater chance of developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – dark marks which persist after redness and feelings of stinging or burning have cleared up.”

READ: PROTECT YOUR REDHEAD SKIN FROM SUMMER BUGS

Lindsay Lohan first contracted the Chikungunya virus before the new year and is still suffering from symptoms. De Giroi does say the appearance of bites on fair skin also plays into the sensation of being bitten. “Fair skin can make a bite seem worse because they appear more severe than on any other skin tone. Perhaps this is where the anecdotal stories of redheads being bitten more than others originate.”

Let’s not forget it is scientifically proven that redheads feel more pain, which could also be why Lohan is experiencing drastic, long-term discomfort. “She could hardly stand up, she was in so much pain,” a source close to the Mean Girls star told the Daily News Wednesday.

Lohan told her Twitter followers on December 27th about her contract with the virus:
