How Redheads Should Minimize Skin Pores

The age-old idea that you can shrink your pores is sadly, just a fantasy. “Pore size is genetically determined,” says Diana Ralys, LE, Skin Expert Certified Health Coach, Owner and Founder of Diana Ralys Skin Health. “Using natural products can help keep the pores clean.” Here are Ralys’ 5 tips for naturally minimizing skin pores and brightening the appearance of the skin:

1. Apple Cider Vinegar: For those with large pores, wipe the skin with apple cider vinegar a few times a week. Saturate the cotton ball and wipe clean skin. Wait a few minutes and wash off with water.

2. Witch Hazel: Use witch hazel as a toner, but make sure it does not contain any alcohol. Alcohol can be very drying on redheads with sensitive skin.

3. Lemon Juice: Wipe skin with freshly squeezed lemon juice few times a week at night to keep pores clean.

4. Enzyme Masks & Exfoliants: These will help digest aged sebum in pores. Once pores are empty of impurities, they naturally contract.

5. Clay-Based Masks: The best clay to look for in a mask is rhassoul clay, which is also call “the swelling clay”. It is 100% natural and ecological. It contains silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium. These minerals make the clay highly detoxifying. The clay not only works to remove impurities from your skin.

We also spoke with Holly Green, skin expert, esthetician and owner of Norabloom Botanicals & Beauty Lounge in Ithaca, New York. “Ladies with large pores, you have to keep them clear, ” says Green. “Always wash your makeup off in the evening. Avoid alcohol and peroxide because they’re too drying and it confuses your skin’s natural PH, especially if you have sensitive skin.”

Green recommends making your own pore minimizing paste at home:

1/2 Cup Baking Soda
2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice

Apply the paste to clean skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, and a apply a light moisturizer to lock it all in. This remedy is a tip recommended by makeup artists everywhere, and celebrities love it too. Actress Emma Stone told France’s ELLE magazine that she uses the kitchen ingredient to exfoliate–to scrub her face and get rid of dry patches.

#LoveYourCurls: 4 More Tips for Naturally Curly Red Hair

Updated: June 8th, 2023

We already know some of the best tips for maintaining naturally curly red hair, but there are always more beauty secrets to share:

1. Use A T-Shirt Instead of a Towel:

Celebrity hair stylists have told us this in the past, and it took us trying it to really believe them. Hair is extra sensitive to the fibers in normal towels and it can cause frizz and breakage. Avoid it by using a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel to dry your hair. It keeps frizz away and makes hair noticeably softer.

2. Finally Glossy® Shine & Luminosity Shampoo for Redheads

Some shampoos strip your red hair of natural oils that help give it a shiny appearance! It took many years to custom-make the Finally Glossy® formula and we’re so excited for redheads to enjoy it. We’re thrilled to release another clean redhead beauty product. It is paraben-free, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, petroleum-free, mineral-oil, and vegan.

3. Pineapple Your Hair At Night:

Wait, Pineapple?! It’s a technique curly girls use to keep their curls in tact while they sleep. Tie your hair in a high ponytail on top of your head using a satin scrunchie (which prevents the crease). Your hair should look like a pineapple. You can either leave it as is or tie a satin scarf around your head while you sleep. When you wake up your curls will be fresh and in tact.

4. Invest In Good Products:

To further love your curls, turn to a product line like Dove Quench Absolute. A new line of curl-enhancing products that perfectly nourish hair plus 4x more defined, natural curls. The Dove Quench Absolute Ultra Nourishing Shampoo, Conditioner, Restoration Mask and Supreme Creme Serum are great ‘redhead friendly’ options. After using the selection, the curls are revived and strengthened.

The Dove #LoveYourCurls campaign is asking YOU to share why you love your curls and inspire the next generation of curly girls to love their hair. Head to the Dove Hair-Walmart site and enter now. One Walmart shopper may be selected to have their curl stories featured in a special-edition Dove Curl e-book, available for download on Walmart.com. Emma Stone and Julianne Moore: How To Get Their Oscars Hair (and Lips)

Updated: October 26th, 2023

If this isn’t THE (happiest) photo of the Oscars, we don’t know what is.

Julianne Moore broke the redhead curse when she won Best Actress in a Leading Role for Still Alice. Thank you, Julianne! And, although Emma Stone didn’t win for her role in Birdman, she was beaming with joy all night. Both of their looks were true Hollywood glam and will be replicated for years to come. We spoke with PRAVANA Global Creative Advisor Sherri Jessee who gave us simple tips on achieving the looks.

EMMA STONE

“Emma Stone hit it out of the park with her wavy bob,” said Jessee.

L’Oréal Paris celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak was responsible for Emma’s beautiful look of the evening. She told PopSugar, “Emma wore a gorgeous, lacy Elie Saab gown in a beautiful green color,” Roszak said. “The color against her red hair reminded me of a beautiful, watercolor painting – very whimsical and 1930s, so I wanted the hair to have a similar feel.”

Emma-Stone-2015-Oscars-Beauty-redhead-how-to-be-a-redhead

PRAVANA’s Sherri Jessee tells us how to get Emma’s look in 4 easy steps:

  • Distribute evenly an egg-sized amount of volumizing foam through damp hair and blow dry.
  • Wrap small sections of hair on a 1 1/4″ wand. Allow to cool, then comb through with a wide toothed comb.
  • Create a deep side part. To create asymmetry, twist one side back and secure with a few redhead bobby pins.
  • Spray with super hold hairspray for long lasting hold.

We know you’re all wondering the color of Emma’s lips. Rachel Goodwin, Stone’s makeup artist, told PopSugar the secret. It featured Chanel Precision Lip Definer in ‘Rouge Candy’ buffed off with a lip brush and then coated with Revlon Ultra HD lipstick in ‘Tulip’.

JULIANNE MOORE

“Another major trend of the evening was the low chignon, worn by Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, and my favorite, Julianne Moore,” says Sherri. “Her hair color is brilliant and the style is super sleek.”

Marcus Francis, Julianne Moore’s hairstylist, told Pret-a-Reporter. “We wanted to wear it up since we’ve done variations on wavy, shiny and texture. But with this momentous evening, we wanted timeless, so when we look back in 30 years it feels classic.”

READ: How to be a Redhead’s Exclusive Interview with Marcus Francis

Francis focused on the soft wave in the front of Moore’s hair, bringing her side part a third of an inch past her eyebrow arch to get a more striking look. “It needed that extra third of an inch to get that line,” says the hairstylist. “It needed that drama.”

julianne_moore_oscars_2015_how_to_be_a_redhead

Sherri explains how to get the look:

  • Emulsify a nickel sized amount of styling creme in your hands and run through the lengths and ends and blow dry hair, stretching to create smooth control.
  • Use a tail comb to form a sharp, deep side part. Brush the hair back and secure into a low ponytail at the nape.
  • Pull the ponytail through a bun maker and pin the shaper securely with a few redhead bobby pins.
  • Create a perfect chignon by forming the hair over the bun maker to cover it. Tuck the ends under and pin.
  • Break open a hair oil and rub the nourishing oil into your palms and gently run over the front of the hair to smooth any flyaways creating a glossy shine.

There are many ways to get a chignon. See how the How to be a Redhead team does it via the how to video below!

Julianne Moore was certainly the woman of the evening and her makeup artist, Elaine Offers, made sure her lips screamed beauty. Offers told Pret-a-Reporter the secret combo. She used two L’Oreal lip colors, the first a brown-rose shade called ‘Unending Amber’ and the other called ‘Raisin Revival’, a long-wear lip color that she applied with a sponge and a swipe of balm for moisture.

With a little help from her hair, she began modeling. “I have made a difference, and I hope I would be able to inspire other redheads out there who get bullied,” says Carrie. “You can stop it. Kelly Osbourne Causes Twitter Uproar With Redhead Insult

The red carpet queen herself, Kelly Osbourne, was discussing the presenters of the evening and Jessica Chastain was mentioned. Kelly quickly responded with, “There are so few people who can rock red hair and be elegant and as gorgeous as she is.” If you were tuning in for the typical, not-so-thrilling Oscar red carpet pre-show, you probably did a quick double take. And, if you have a DVR, chances are you rewound it immediately to see if you heard Ms. Osbourne correctly.

Since the live red carpet was in fact LIVE, we doubt Kelly meant it, but we can’t help but think of the dozons of red carpet stars who look stunning — Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Christina Hendricks, Amy Adams, Rose Leslie, Sophie Turner and Oliva Grant are just a handful. The point is, elegance is not determined by hair color and you can’t generalize a woman based on her red hair. We happen to think ALL redheads are elegant and every single ginger of the world is gorgeous.

6 Things Every Mother Should Tell Their Redhead Daughter

    1. Never dye your hair.

Most redheads, at one point or another, want to blend in with the crowd and ask to dye their hair. It’s a mothers duty to make sure their daughter sticks to their natural roots.
