    How Redheads Should Shop Cruelty-Free

    No animals harmed!

    Updated: November 16, 2020

    By: Jessie Gable

There’s some pretty exciting news in my house these days. We’re in the process of getting a foster beagle that has been released from a test lab near my house. I’ve been on the Beagle Freedom Project foster waitlist for a year but they haven’t had any rescues in my area. Since I found this group, I have learned how terrible animals have been (and still are) treated in testing facilities. I’ve been trying my best to only use cruelty-free products.

If you’re a redhead, you might be thinking, “I already have difficulty finding products for my skin and hair, now I have to dig deeper to find ones that are cruelty-free?!”

It’s really not as hard as it sounds. This is how to start:

    1. KNOW YOUR SYMBOLS

On the back of the bottle, you can find symbols (like the recycling one we all know). I always look for the Leaping Bunny mark. This organization makes sure all products with its stamp undergo strict verification that there is no testing on animals. The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) logo is another one to look for. This organization works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns to end animal cruelty.

    2. WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

This is where it can get tricky. When you simply see, “Not Tested On Animals” or a simple “Cruelty-Free” stamp, this isn’t a stamp of approval. So you just have to trust (or not trust) that they’re doing what they say.

    3. DOWNLOAD THE CRUELTY-FREE APP

It’s free on iTunes and you can scan the barcode on a product before you buy it to verify it’s cruelty-free.

Since my cruelty-free quest, I’ve found many ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved beauty brands that I love! Here is my ultimate list and some of my favorite products:

Urban Decay: Try their Stay Naked The Fix Powder Foundation if you’re looking for a weightless, vegan long-wear powder foundation with buildable medium coverage and a matte finish.

NARS: Try their signature Orgasm Blush. It has peachy pink undertones with gold shimmer!

E.l.f. CosmeticsAnother discount brand you can get for under $10. I highly recommend their Dewy Coconut Setting Mist and the Putty Eye Primer.

Acure Organics: This brand has a wonderful ‘redhead friendly’ skin and hair care line. Their Ultra Hydrating line is great for those with dry, damaged hair.

Rahua: A great cruelty-free, clean brand. Try the Leave-In Treatment and Classic Shampoo.

5 Items Every Redhead Needs In Her Closet This Fall

Don't let the autumn months approach without these must-have items.

    By: Denise Erpenbach

Autumn is fast approaching and with it comes the fall fashion trends that are perfect for redheads. There is just something about the changing leaves that makes our fiery locks shine even more!

Everyone knows fall is the season of boots, tunic tops, and beautiful scarves, but I wanted to mix it up and try something different. Besides, we redheads, we can wear anything.

With that in mind, here are my top 5 items for redheads this fall:

    1. MOTO BOOTS: Nothing says fall quite like a new pair of boots. If you are looking for a change from the everyday knee-high, black boot, these make more of a statement. If you’re comfortable with a bit of edge, these boots will keep your feet happy and make your legs look great. Shop here.

    2. VICTORIAN BLOUSES: Redheads look fabulous in all colors, but mulberry is one of my favorites. This turtleneck blouse will really will make red hair sing. Shop here.

    3. GRAY DRESS: Gray is such an under used color on redheads. With most of us being cool toned, gray suits our porcelain skin perfectly. It can easily be dressed up or dressed down. You can pair it with boots and a leather jacket, or a colorful scarf and statement earrings. Shop here.

    4. FRINGE SKIRT: I’ll be the first to admit, the fringe trend has never really been my favorite. I think it can either look very chic or completely unflattering depending on the shape of the garment. This asymmetrical skirt is a good compromise. Not too long or short, and flows nicely when you walk.  In addition this wine color will look fabulous next to pale skin. Shop here.

    5. CAPE SILHOUETTE JACKET: Hear me out on this one. When I saw this on the runway in February I thought, “Who wants to look like Count Dracula walking down the street?” The answer is me! These can be such an excellent statement for a nice dinner out on the town. You don’t have to wear it all night long, just something to keep you warm and elegant looking until you arrive. This jacket from Zara is an excellent choice for the fall/winter season. Shop here.

Extraordinary Portraits Erase Stereotype That Redheads Are Always White

Photographer Michelle Marshall captures African Caribbean redheads as part of her project, MC1R.

Redheads come in all shapes, sizes and not all have the stereotypical fair skin.

READ: 9 Natural Redheads From Different Ethnical Backgrounds

It is true that there is a redhead in every ethnicity and continent in the world. This is what resulted in London-based photographer Michelle Marshall’s quest to capture as many Afro Caribbean redheads as possible as part of her project, MC1R.

As documented by the news outlet, Mic, Marshall commented saying, “To make sense of what’s around us we put people in boxes – it’s a natural reflex and is not intended in a malicious way. I’m hoping that with these pictures that reflex changes a bit.”

The project is named MC1R because (as we all know) it is the gene responsible for red hair.

8 Beauty Products Every Redhead Should Bring on Vacation

Redhead Beauty Recommendations for Three Popular Vacation Varieties

    By: Annjo Terrill

As a teacher with a couple months of summer vacation every year, I have the good fortune of getting to travel quite a bit. This summer, I visited the island of Cyprus, where my red hair definitely stood out among all the dark Greek curls. My frequent travels have earned me more than just stamps in my passport though; I’ve also learned plenty of beauty tips for redheads on the go. The list of summer destination possibilities is endless, but let’s simplify it to 3 popular vacation varieties, and talk about what redheads should know before hitting the road.

The Beach Vacation: What do redheads need to have fun in the sun? No surprises here:

    1. SUNSCREEN – I know we talk about it all the time, but that’s how important it is! By now, you know the brand that works best for you. But, I would like to suggest, if you want a little tint with your facial sunscreen, to try a BB Cream. It’s foundation/sunscreen/moisturizer all in one.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: Boscia BB Cream with SPF 27 for sensitive skin. This one-step product creates a lustrous, flawless finish as it hydrates, firms, and soothes the skin. The shade is light enough for redheads and the ingredients are designed for sensitive skin. It is a great option for vacation.

    2. BIG FLOPPY HAT – Choose your favorite. Target has a nice, inexpensive variety. On this trip, I brought their floppy brim hat.

    3. LIP BALM WITH SUNSCREEN – Lips can get extremely sunburnt too! Keep them protected all day.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: All Terrain Lip Armor Lip Protection & Healing Balm, Peppermint, SPF 28. This lip balm has sunscreen in it, and a soothing peppermint tingle. You’ll love it on the beach this summer.

The Big City Vacation:  First of all, don’t think that just because you’re avoiding the beach that you won’t get sunburned in the city, because the sun is shining there too, and you may be doing a lot of walking outside, so the beach tips still apply.

    1.  2-IN-1 LIPSTICK – Choose a product that adds a little color and moisture for the ultimate kick!

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick Duo in Tangerine/Lingonberry. In a single tube, you have a subtle berry shade for a relaxing day in the park and a flashy red for a night on the town.

    2. WATERPROOF MASCARA –  There’s no need for heavy makeup in the city, especially European cities. European women usually keep their faces simple. Lips and mascara are enough. But it’s hot, so waterproof is best.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: Covergirl Lashblast Waterproof Volumizing Mascara in Black Brown.

    3. FOOT CREME – I’m always surprised by how much walking I do on trips to the city, and if you want to look stylish, you may not always wear the most comfortable shoes. I love using this foot cream before bed, because it combines healing coconut oil with refreshing peppermint and rosemary. It’s a great way to end a long day of walking in the city.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme

The Backpacking Vacation: This trip is all about packing light, so how can we condense our must-haves into a single backpack?

    1. TRAVEL-SIZE LAUNDRY DETERGENT: Believe me, washing your clothes in the sink of a hostel every once in a while is a much better idea than weighing your backpack down with too many clothes. Tide’s Travel Sink Packets will do the trick.

    2. INVEST IN A DRY SHAMPOO: Whatever your normal hair washing schedule is like, cut it in half. So, if you wash your hair every day, wash only every other day on this trip. This will save you some weight in your backpack, and we all know it’s better for our hair anyway. Bring along your favorite dry shampoo to keep your hair looking clean — it will help you through those days when you’re dying to wash your red locks.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation: Blo Pro Dry Shampoo

    3. FACE WIPES: If you forget everything else, don’t forget these! You may not always have a place to wash your face, or hands, or feet while on the go, so face wipes can give you a bit of refreshment when you need it.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Recommendation:  Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes. They call themselves the “sensitive skin experts,” and I can attest that they are ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved.

A general rule of thumb: if you’re like me, and need a curling or flat iron at times to tame your do, make sure you buy an electronic converter if you’re leaving the country.

Happy Travels! ¡Vaya Con Dios! Bon Voyage!

And as always, whether overseas or in your hometown, Rock it Like a Redhead!

7 Things To Know About Raising a Redhead Teenager

Whether this article speaks to you, or you're a parent, relative or best friend, here are 7 tips for raising redhead teenagers.

    By: Maddy Richards

Oh teen years, what a hot mess of hormones and emotions, the years of decision making and formative learning. Being a teenager is no walk in the park, but being a redhead teenager comes with it’s own unique set of challenges. As a former redhead teenager, here are the things I wish I had known about these crazy years, and how my hair of all things, would play into this emotional time of my life. And, if you’re a parent or best friend, here is what to expect:

    1. People will most likely at some point, be rude to redheads.

They think the jokes are harmless, but most of the time they’re not. “Kick-A-Ginger Day” is a thing that people will bring up, the jokes about redheads having no souls happen frequently, and being called a “ginge” or worse is common. As a teenager or the parent of one, prepare for the appropriate responses, learn how to boost your self-esteem so those remarks aren’t as hurtful, and always be sure you reinforce how beautiful red hair is.

    2. Makeup is different for redheads.

It’s hard when you have a parent or siblings who aren’t redheads, and who aren’t sure how makeup is different for you. My pale skin and the different colors that worked for me weren’t what worked for my mom or sisters. It’s important to learn about how makeup is different for redheads, and help teach your teenagers how to make it work for them.

    3. Sometimes redhead teenagers will want to dye their hair. This is fairly common, they want to fit in more and be more “normal.”

While I personally never dyed my hair, some of my redhead friends did. This is something you and your teen should discuss, and something you should be open to. While we want our teenagers to rock their red hair, self confidence is so important especially at this time. Spend time discussing it, researching it, and while doing so make sure you work on making them feel confident with their red hair. Sometimes the time you spend helping them realize how beautiful they are will make them not want to dye their hair anymore, other times they will still want to change the color, and that’s ok too. Just be supportive and loving no matter what.

    4. Finding a redhead role model is essential.

I rarely saw redheads on TV or in movies when I was younger – now it’s so easy to research people, and easy to find someone for your teenager to look up to. Find someone who not only rocks their red hair, but is a good person and someone they can really aspire to be. It’s not all about looks, but finding someone who they feel a connection to and can then look up to for all their positive personality traits. These 10 redheaded women might be a good start.

    5. Cultivate an attitude of confidence.

Being a teenager is a rough time all around. It’s important to understand that differences are beautiful, and because they are unique, they are rare and precious. Helping cultivate an attitude of confidence not only based around their hair color, but all of their physical and personality traits, will help them to gain the trust in themselves they’ll need to face the difficult times of teenage existence.

    6. No one is alone.

There are thousands of us who have been where you are, and others coming up behind you. Be an example of what beauty and poise exist within all of us redheads – we are all together in this and will help you navigate the halls of your middle school or high school with grace and ease.

    7. They might have a feisty attitude.

And, that’s okay. It comes with the territory of adolescence, but it may be in a more intense form — or so they say (wink) — because of the fiery attitude.

11 Ways To Make Your Red Hair Grow Faster

    Updated: June 13, 2020

I’ve had longish red hair for most of my life. I’ve only cut it short twice and once was because I had donated it. I love the way long hair makes me feel. If you crave long hair after cutting it short as I’ve done in the past, then you came to the right place!

Today, I am sharing all the things I do to help my natural red hair grow and all the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years:

    1. Brush your scalp

I never used brushes much on my hair because someone told me once that the bristles could cause more damage. However, it is true that hair grows faster when there is more blood circulation to the scalp. Now, I brush once a day, every night before bed with a bristle brush. Brush the scalp in C motions for about 5 minutes — it is relaxing, too! If you are not a fan of brushing, concentrate on the scalp only.

    2. Use heat protectants

The trick is to never let your hair break if you are trying to grow it longer. I’m a huge believer that heat is the biggest cause of damaged hair. I like to straighten my hair because its natural waviness sometimes gets unruly. I used to hate using a heat protectant on my hair because I thought it weighed my hair down. This changed when I started to see notice breakage and split ends.

I soon opted for a heat protectant and learned the key is to not go overboard with the product – too much can make the hair burn when it comes in contact with a hot tool. Make sure to spray the protectant (lightly!) when you see the most damage, and for most of us, it is on the ends.

    3. Avoid using heat

Have you noticed how healthy and silky a child’s hair is? This is probably because they don’t use heat on their hair as adults do. Like I admitted before, I believe the biggest thing that will damage your hair is heat, however, I have a hard time not using heat on my hair. I will, however, air dry my hair overnight so I don’t have to blow dry it as often. I recommend going as long as you can without using any heat. If you can’t let your hair air dry, braid wet hair at night so the next day you have pretty (heatless) waves.

    4. Biotin*

These little vitamins sure do wonders. I have been taking them for a couple of months and noticed my hair is stronger, longer and shinier. Not only are they good for your hair, but they are also good for your nails and skin. I only take one biotin a day and have seen a big difference. Make sure you get all-natural capsules and buy them from a trusted source.

    5. Exercise

Did you know that exercising can promote hair growth? We all know that exercising is good for your overall health, but it’s also good for your hair as well. Supposedly it helps get your blood flowing and promotes hair growth. So go get your sweat on, redhead ladies.

    6. Get fewer trims

I’m probably going to get a lot of criticism about this, but I don’t get a trim every 6-8 weeks as the hairstylist recommend. I only go for trims when I notice my hair is super damaged, which equals out to 2 to 3 times a year. First of all, it saves money and who doesn’t like that? Second of all, you should only get trims when you actually need them. So, give your hair time to grow and only trim it when it’s necessary. You’ll see your hair get longer and not stay at the same length forever. And, find a hairstylist that isn’t ‘scissor happy’. Seek out a stylist that knows you want to grow your hair long and isn’t eager to cut it all off.

    7. Deep condition

This is one thing I love to do and find it very relaxing. I am very consistent with using a deep conditioner and/or coconut oil on my hair once or twice a week. After shampooing, I put a deep conditioner in my hair for about 5 minutes, then rinse it out with cool water. The cool water will help seal the cuticle and keep all the good stuff inside.

    8. Eat healthy foods

I have never been a picky eater so this has never been an issue. I love healthy foods and crave them more than the unhealthy stuff. If you aren’t like me and need some ideas, this is what I like to include in my diet to ensure my hair is getting what it needs to stay healthy:

Healthy fats like salmon, avocados, pumpkin seeds, walnuts

Sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe: these have beta carotene in them which our body turns into Vitamin A which helps protect and produce the oil in your scalp.

Eggs, chicken, pork, beef: sources of protein and iron. Iron helps cells carry oxygen to your hair follicles and lack of iron can lead to hair loss.

Spinach, broccoli, any leafy green: contains beta-carotene, iron, vitamin C and folate

Soybeans, kidney beans: sources of protein, zinc, biotin and iron

Greek yogurt: vitamin B5 and vitamin D

Blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, tomatoes: lots of vitamin C which are important for blood circulation to the scalp.

    9. Wash your hair less frequently

No, it’s not gross. The more you shampoo your hair, the more you are removing the natural healthy oils that are there to protect it and keep it healthy. Also, the less frequently you wash your hair, the less you have to blow-dry and straighten/curl, and as I’ve said before the less heat the better! I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. You will have to train yourself to do this so start off by washing your hair every other day and work your way up. Dry shampoo also works really well. It allows your hair to feel clean, give it texture and give you another day without washing. I promise that your hair will thrive from this.

READ: 10 Ways to Nurture and Care for Your Red Hair

    10. Use a wide-tooth comb

When you get out of the shower, opt for a wide-tooth comb to brush out your gorgeous locks. It is easier on your hair and causes less breakage. I’ve been doing this for about 10 years and not only noticed a difference in my hair’s length, but also the frizziness seems to be tamed better than ever.

READ: 4 Ways To Add Shine To Your Red Hair

    11. UV and wind protection

Use a sun hat while at the beach and braid your hair if it’s windy outside so your hair doesn’t become tangled or messy. And, invest in a sunscreen spray for your red hair — you won’t regret it.

      Meet Cheramielee

It took years and years for Cheramielee to embrace her red hair. When the day finally came, she wholeheartedly accepted her hair, pale skin and freckles; how she viewed herself began to change. “I finally have a genuine love for SPF 75 and my fiery personality,” she said.

Five Ways to Rock Your Pale Skin During the Summer

By now all the beach-goers have virtually perfected that golden-brown hue. But, you oh fair maiden whose pale skin was only on trend in days of yore, you’re stuck with sunburn blotches, a zillion more freckles than you started out with in June, and no tan in sight.

Just because your crisp compadres might rub it in, doesn’t mean you have to slink off to the tanning booth to banish your paleness. Why not embrace your be-freckled skin for the beautiful creation it is? But be careful of those UV rays – August still comes packed with them.

Here are five ways to keep the sunburns at bay and look fabulous while doing so.

      1. Use sunscreen.

Obviously. Being born very fair, you know how important it is.

      2. Wear hats like a diva.

Or a baseball player if that’s more your style. But a big-brimmed, full-on racetrack hat not only makes you look confident, it also shields the hard-to-sunscreen places like the ever-pesky bridge of your nose, top of your ears, and scalp.

      3. Wear long sleeves or throw a wrap over your shoulder.

Autumn collections are already on the floors of major retailers, so people will think you’re a step ahead in sartorial game.

      4. If you’re headed to the beach for one last hurrah, wear a one-piece bathing suit.

Gals, you not only look much more glamorous than all the bikini bums, you also don’t have to worry about missing a problem spot on your tummy or back while applying your sun block.

      5. Drink Tea.

Yeah, not kidding. Tea is just always a good idea in general, and it’s been reported that the polyphenols found in green tea could impede the development of skin tumors. So, while it’s not exact science, it certainly can’t hurt, and sipping from a nice cuppa is a surefire way to look classy.

10 Redheads Changing the World Right Now

      By: Annajo Terrill

“I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race–that rarely do I even simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant…I am haunted by humans.”

This is a quotation from one of my favorite books, The Book Thief, and in it I think the narrator accurately summarizes the world we live in today–a world full of injustice but also activism, oppression but also freedom-fighters, poverty but also generosity, darkness but also light.  The human race has made its mistakes, but I love that there are humans striving to correct those mistakes.  I’m just returning home from a few weeks of working alongside a group of women fighting to end human trafficking in Europe.  The work these women do on a daily basis is exhausting, but also amazingly refreshing, and they inspired me not only to continue fighting for this cause, but to begin researching redheaded women everywhere who are fighting other injustices and working to make the world a better place.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I wanted to draw attention to ten redheads who have been recognized recently in the media for their work to change the world we live in.

      1. Connie Britton, Worldwide Orphans

      connie_britton_how_to_be_a_Redhead

Connie Britton was actually my initial inspiration for this article.  I came in from an overwhelming night of visiting trafficking victims in the “red-light district” of a certain city, and decided to scan through Instagram to lighten the mood.  That’s when I saw this Connie Britton Instagram photoConnie with her adorable son, “Yoby,” promoting Night of 1,000 Dinners to raise awareness and funds for Worldwide Orphans.  My first thought was probably the same as yours–this woman has the hair of an angel!  But what an inspiration to see that she definitely has the heart to go along with it.  Britton was also recently appointed as a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, and as such, will raise awareness of UNDP’s work to eradicate poverty and empower women locally and globally.

      2. Shannon May, Bridge International Academies

      shannon_may_redhead_

While conducting educational research in rural China, Shannon May saw first-hand how the primary education system was failing families living in poverty. This prompted more research on how to teach these children the skills they needed to survive, and the results were Bridge International Academies, the world’s most prominent provider of primary education for families living in poverty ($2.00 or less a day).  Bridge International launched its first school in Nairobi in 2009. Now it educates over 100,000 pupils and plans to continue expanding, ensuring that all children have access to a great education, regardless of their economic status.

      3. Reba McEntire, Outnumber Hunger

      reba_outnumber_hunger_0_1426856918

Over the years, Reba has been a part of more charitable causes than can be listed here, but recently she has become of the face of a joint initiative from Feeding America, General Mills, and Big Label Machine Group called Outnumber Hunger.  In addition to being a spokesperson for the campaign, Reba also agreed to host a charity concert in April with a few of her friends–Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line, and more–in order to help with this cause of feeding the hungry all over America.

      4. Elizabeth Cutler, SoulCycle

      soul-cycle-elizabeth-cutler-redhead

Not only is Elizabeth the co-founder and CEO of SoulCyle, a posh gym that has redefined fitness in NYC, but her organization also raises about $2 million a year for philanthropic causes.  She has begun work with Action for Healthy Kids, Edible Schoolyard NYC, and Children of the City to provide scholarships for at-risk kids to attend SoulCycle classes as a part of a mentorship program that will promote healthy life choices.

      5. Emma Stone, Youth Mentoring and Autism Speaks

      3839006k

Emma Stone and her boyfriend Andrew Garfield win the award for creativity when it comes to promoting the charities close to their hearts.  In September of 2012, the couple noticed paparazzi outside the restaurant where they were eating and came up with a clever way of protecting their privacy.  They covered their faces with pieces of paper that read, “We just found out that there are paparazzi outside the restaurant we were eating in. Why not take this opportunity to bring attention to organizations that need and deserve it? www.wwo.org, www.gildasclubnyc.org. Have a good day!”  The couple repeated this trick in June of 2014, this time bringing attention to www.youthmentoring.org, www.autismspeaks.org as well.

      6. Hannah Brancato, FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture

      hannah_brancato-redhead

Hannah Brancato is an artist and activist working to challenge the world to think about our personal connections to social injustices.  Hannah Brancato and Rebecca Nagle formed FORCE in 2010 to create a venue for a more honest conversation about sexual violence in America. To promote this needed conversation, FORCE creates art to generate media attention, forcing people to talk about it.  Monument Quilt, is a specific campaign that stitches the stories of women who have survived rape or abuse onto squares of a quilt.  She says her goal through this piece of art is to break down the narrow-minded idea of rape, because everyone has such varied experiences.  Her hope is that by 2017 she will have enough squares to stitch the words “Not Alone” across a mile-long space on the National Mall.

      7. Geena Davis, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media

      156275271RM00021_GEENA_DAVI

Geena Davis has long been an advocate for the equality of the sexes.  As a child, I always admired her not only for her beautiful red hair, but also for the fact that she usually played strong female roles in the movies I loved like Thelma in Thelma & Louise and Dottie in A League of Their Own.  The Institute is the only research-based organization working within the media and entertainment industry to educate, influence, and improve gender balance by informing children on the importance of reducing stereotyping and creating diverse female characters in the entertainment industry.  The institute works with children 11 and under.

      8. Susan Sarandon, Heifer International

      Susan-sarandon-heifer-redhead

While Susan Sarandon has been a well-known activist for causes all around the world, she has been supporting Heifer International for more than twenty years.  Heifer International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to putting an end to world hunger and poverty, and in 2011 Sarandon traveled to Cambodia with her daughter, Eva Amurri Martino, to work personally with the organization. There she discovered that “women, particularly in poor rural communities, really are the ‘glue’ and the key to ending global hunger and poverty.”  They grow and prepare the food, so in a sense, they are on the front lines of the war against hunger.  Sarandon has dedicated decades to feeding the hungry and empowering women around the globe.

      9. Amie Stepanovich, Access

      amie_stepanovich_redhead

When I think about the many battles against injustice around the world, cybersecurity does not usually come to my mind, but thankfully, for Amie Stepanovich, it does.  Amie is an expert in domestic cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy law.  She regularly responds to threats involving human rights and cyber surveillance.  Amie was recognized in 2014 as one of Forbes “30 under 30 Leaders in Law and Policy.”  She recently testified before Congress about domestic drone use, and continues to defend the digital rights of users everywhere.

      10. Julianne Moore, Women of Worth

      julianne_moore_redhead_women_of_worth

This program started by L’Oreal honors “women of worth” who are giving back to their communities by selecting ten women to receive $10,000 toward their cause and one to receive an additional $25,000.  Julianne Moore was inspired to become involved in this program because of a “woman of worth” in her own life–her mother.  She says her mother was married by 20, had three children by 25, and was still able to go on and earn two Master’s degrees.  Moore says this program struck a personal chord in her, and she has been blown away by the nominees.  The winners of the 2015 honors will be announced in November.

Freedom fighters can be found anywhere–on the front lines of our military, in impoverished schools in Africa, behind cyber surveillance screens, or in the red-light districts of Europe–the important part is not where they are, but that they are there.  It is an honor to be living in the same era as the phenomenal women on this list, and the many others not mentioned who are actively fighting for justice around the world.  Let’s shine light into the darkness, and Rock it like a Redhead!

A Tribute To The Redheads Of Downton Abbey

      By: Adina Bernstein

The final season of Downton Abbey currently in production (sad face). On January 3, 2016, Downton Abbey returns on PBS with its 6th and final season. Until then, let’s celebrate Downton Abbey’s many redhead actors as we prepare to say farewell to the characters and we’ve all come to love:

      1. Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore, Series 1-Present)

      lesley_nicol_downton_abbey_redhad

Downton’s resident cook, Mrs. Patmore’s has zingers and one liners are second only to the Dowager’s. While Mrs. Patmore may seem like she is a tough boss to work for, she is actually a softie, especially when it come to her assistant cook/surrogate daughter Daisy. A fun fact that has been discussed in many interviews with Ms. Nicol is that her talents in the kitchen, unlike her fictional counterpart, are limited.

      2. Amy Nuttall (Ethel Parks, Series 2-3)

      amy_nuttall_how_to_be_a_redhead

Ethel is the “poor Edith” of the downstairs characters. Naïve, and sometimes foolish, Ethel is mocked and taken advantage of by her colleagues. After sleeping with a soldier who is later killed in battle, she finds herself pregnant and forced to work as a prostitute to pay the bills. She finally has a semi happy ending when she works out an arrangement with her son’s paternal grandparents.

      3. Samantha Bond (Lady Rosamund Painswick, Series 1-Present)

      Samantha_Bond_lady_rosamund_redhead_downton_abbey

A wealthy widow with no children of her own, Rosamund dotes on her nieces and frequently visits her family. She can be described as the Lady Russell of Downton Abbey. She is well meaning, especially towards Edith and her unexpected pregnancy, but in the end, her advice is more of a detriment than a help.

      4. Rose Leslie (Gwen Dawson, Series 1)

      rose_leslie_downton_abbey_how_to_be_a_redhead

Gwen represents many young women of the late Edwardian/early 20th century era. The world was changing; opportunities for young women were starting to expand beyond the traditional roles in service. Taking a typing course, Gwen becomes a secretary and leaves Downton Abbey for what is hoped to be a better life. Fans of Game of Thrones are likely to know her as Ygritte.

      5. Zoe Boyle (Lavinia Swire, Series 2)

      downton_abbey_redhead

Introduced as Matthew’s fiancé at the beginning of the second series, her presence upped the ante on the will they or wont they Mary/Matthew relationship.  The daughter of a middle class barrister, Lavinia seemed to be more of a match for Matthew than the aristocratic and something bitchy Mary. But in the end, she sadly succumbed, like millions at that time to the Spanish Flu, paving the way for Mary and Matthew.

      6. Shirley MacLaine (Martha Levinson, Series 2-3)

      shirley_maclaine_downton_abbey_redhead

Cora’s outspoken and modern mother is like many of her class and era. Not satisfied to see her daughter married to a local boy, Martha was later satisfied when her daughter married into the Crawley family and gained the title of Countess of Grantham. Standing in contrast to the Crawley matriarch, Violet, Martha is ready to welcome the modern world with open arms.

To continue this Downton Abbey talk, BBC America dropped the first trailer yesterday for original series The Last Kingdomfrom Downton Abbey executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant. Check it out here:
