Shaving Tips & Techniques: How Redheads Can Get The Best Shave

A few months back, we discussed if and why redheads could be allergic to nickel in razors. Do you have problems with bumps on your legs from shaving? Do the bumps resemble bug bites and begin to itch and sometimes hurt? Do the bumps spread to your underarms? If you stop shaving, do they go away?

If you’ve answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, you might be allergic to nickel in your razor. Or, you might not be shaving properly.

We talked more in depth with Venus Dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine. “Some redheads tend to have very sensitive skin that gets red and irritated easily. Irritation from shaving can be prevented by using high-quality tools and by using proper shaving techniques,” she says.

These are her top tips for how redheads should shave this summer:

1. Does the type of razor really matter?

“I recommend the Venus Swirl Razor because it has five independently-mounted blades that individually adjust to your skin and a multidimensional movement that will give you a close shave in one stroke, so you don’t have to go over the same area again and again. Fewer strokes means less interaction with skin and less chance of irritation.”

2. How often should a redhead shave?

“This is up to their personal preference. It may also depend on how quickly your hair grows back. As long as you are using a high quality razor, there is no limit on how often you should shave. With the proper razor you can refresh your shave every time you shower, even if it’s twice a day.”

3. Does it make a difference if the razor is doubled?

“Absolutely. There is definitely a difference between a 5-bladed razor and a single-bladed razor – and this difference contributes to your overall shaving experience. Venus Swirl features Gillette’s most advanced blade technology with five, thin, spring-mounted blades that are spaced closely together for reduced and more uniform pressure, so there is less skin that bulges between each blade while shaving. This helps to minimize the chances of nicks and cuts. The 5- bladed Venus Swirl razor gives a closer shave than most 3-bladed or 2-bladed razors.”

4. Do you have a favorite DIY tip for shaving?

” I have two great tips. 1) To help prevent ingrown hairs on the bikini area, use an exfoliating toner twice daily. You can use the same toner you use on your face to clean the area. If you have ingrowns already, follow the toner with the same acne cream or liquid that you use on your face. 2) If you are getting a spray tan or using self-tanner, shave first to exfoliate and get a smoother surface and a more uniform color.”

5. What is the best way redheads should shave?

“Here are my key steps to avoid irritation:

1. Prep your skin and hydrate your hair with warm water before shaving. Hydrating your hair is important as it helps make hairs softer and easier to cut.

2. Next, use ample amounts of moisture rich-shave gel like the new Venus with a Touch of Olay shave gel. Some people forego shave gel, but it’s actually another important step in your shaving process as it allows your razor to glide more easily over your skin. Shave gel helps you track where you’ve shaved so you don’t need to go over the same area twice – another big source of irritation.

3. Always moisturize after shaving and make it a part of your daily routine. Ingrown hairs occur when dead or dry skin covers hair. Moisturizer is much more effective on properly exfoliated skin and shaving is actually a gentle form of exfoliation.”

GIVEAWAY: Hosted by PCA SKIN. Instantly Perfect Your Redhead Skin

We’ve raved about PCA SKIN and why it’s “a must” for redheads, especially the sensitive skin line. It’s always recommended that those with sensitivities  — which can range from a combination of irritation, discomfort, bumps, redness, inflammation, eczema and rosacea  — choose a skin care line which caters to these issues.

The PCA SKIN products for sensitive skin does not contain fragrances, lanolin, formaldehyde, latex and menthol, which are common irritants, and refrains from the use of aggressive chemical and mechanical exfoliants which can also increase skin irritation.

Just when we thought the skin line could not be more targeted to redheads, and those with sensitive skin, they also urge their customers to invest in sunscreen. Generally, redheads have fair skin and are more sun sensitive than those without fair skin. PCA SKIN recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation for Daily Use to protect the skin from UV rays. PCA SKIN’s sunscreens are:

  • Quick-absorbing with a light finish
  • Can be easily worn under makeup
  • Provides antioxidant protection and protects against UV rays

We’re thrilled PCA SKIN is giving away 3 ‘Redhead Friendly’ sensitive skin routine trios, which include: Creamy Cleanser, Anti-Redness Serum and Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45.

4 Time-Saving Beauty Tips for Redheads

A few months ago, after a lot of introspection and research and analysis (a ridiculous amount, really, but hey, I like to be prepared!), I took the plunge and got a puppy. It had been years since there’d been any kind of dog in the house, let alone a tiny 8-week-old fur-baby. While I thought I was ready for what that would entail, I didn’t realize just how much of my morning routine would have to be shortened in order to take care of her before heading out for the day. I used to be the sort of person who would luxuriate over her creams and gels and powders, taking her time (and letting herself wake up). But now that there’s a bouncing ball of fuzzy energy wanting to play at 6AM, I have to hustle.

Here are some of the ‘redhead friendly’ approved shortcuts I’ve adopted to get me out the door ASAP while still looking fabulous and rockin’ it like a redhead.

1. Moisturizer & Sunscreen In-One:

Using a separate moisturizer and sunscreen? Who has time for that? But as we fair, freckled redheads all know, skipping either of these products just isn’t an option. So instead of doing individual layers, simply blend the two together or find a moisturizer with a hefty dose of SPF already in it.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Products: Combination of Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 and La Mer Oil Absorbing Lotion for summer and Ole Henricksen Truth Revealed Crème with SPF 15 for winter.

READ: 5 Best Tinted Sunscreens for Redheads

Tip: If you want to get really crazy, try adding a dollop of your foundation to your moisturizer/SPF concoction, especially during warmer months when foundation on its own is too heavy. Presto, you’ve just made a tinted moisturizer suited just for you!

2. Don’t Mess With Concealer:

Put down the concealer! For everyday activities, it’s quicker to simply pat a tiny amount of foundation on blotchy spots for a flawless, smooth finish. And, it’s one less product to use.

3. Multi-Tasking Makeup:

Fall in love with all-in-one products. My favorite is NARS The Multiple in shade ‘Orgasm’. It is legendary for its multi-tasking abilities. Use it on your cheeks for a dewy flush or your lips for a hint of color. As a bonus, the non-messy tube applicator makes it a fantastic staple for your purse.

4. Lip Crayon:

Make lip crayons your best friends. These have so many time-saving perks: you get the precision of a liner with the coverage of a lipstick, and since they have awesome staying power, there’s no need to reapply. Try Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm or Bang Beauty Lip Crayon.

    Fourth of July: Redhead Edition

Fashion and beauty advice for redheads on this American holiday

If you are like me, the 4th of July is one of the highlights of the summer. Family barbeques, summer sun, cute clothes, and spectacular fireworks make for a perfect day and spectacular evening. Even better, the colors of the holiday (red, white, and blue) are absolutely made for redheads!

Here are tips & ideas for your 4th of July outfit:

    1. Dress: A flowy, blue dress is the perfect staple for summer. Blue looks great on all redheads because it lends itself beautifully to your fiery locks.

    2. Pants & Tee: If you aren’t a dress kind-of-gal, go for a relaxed jean and a 4th of July inspired top.

    2. Cardigan: A white kimono-inspired cardigan is an excellent option to keep you warm when the sun goes down and cover your shoulders from the powerful sun rays.

    3. Shoes: Tan wedges are a personal favorite of mine as they can go with so many outfits.

    4. Gold Tones: I have been having a love affair with gold. A touch of gold really brings out the coppery tones in my red hair, especially in the summer sunlight.

    5. Sunglasses: Sunglasses for redheads are a must for an outdoor BBQ.

    6. Lipstick: The final touch is a creamy red lipstick. This is the perfect time to pull out your favorite red lipstick and rock it!

And, last but certainly not least: always remember to pack your sunscreen.

What are you wearing this weekend? Have a wonderful 4th of July holiday and keep Rockin’ like a Redhead!

The 6 Best Sunscreens Picks for Redheads on Vacation

    Updated: May 4, 2022

When I was young (and stupid), I used to fight my mom on sunscreen.  As a mom myself now, I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for her to let me figure things out for myself despite knowing full well sunscreen was an absolute must. After a few particularly painful burns though, things clicked, and thankfully now applying sunscreen isn’t just automatic, but something of an obsession.

The market for sunscreens nowadays could not be better – it seems like every day another sun-defending product pops up. I for one could not be more pleased with this turn of events; long gone are the days that being tan was the utmost standard of beauty. Now, it’s all about protecting your fair skin and defending against the ever-lurking threat of skin cancer.

    Daunting, yes, but doable!

Every redhead has their own sunscreen tips, but here are a few of my own, plus some favorite products, that I’ve gathered over the years.

READ: Why SPF 30 Is The Golden Ticket – High SPF’s Are Not Better

TIP: Do it naked! Sunscreen application, that is. Before donning your bathing suit, apply lotion in your birthday suit to make sure you don’t miss any spots.  This also helps avoid the dreaded ‘crispy edges’ syndrome — i.e the sunburn you get along the edges of your bikini where you didn’t apply close enough! Ouch.

    1. COOLA Suncare Mineral Face Sunscreen Lotion Sheer Matte SPF 30

This mineral face sunscreen smells like heaven and won’t irritate even the most sensitive of skin. It is a good everyday face sunscreen that you won’t mind putting on every morning. Shop here

    2. Babo Botanicals Super Shield Zinc Sport Stick Sunscreen SPF 50

A solid sunscreen is handy to have when your on the go, and great for touching your face, hands, and feet. Don’t be scared by the Zinc in the title–no white noses here. This stick goes on clear. Don’t forget the tiny spots on your body. I’ve found those make for the most painful burns! Stick sunscreen is great for the edges of your ears, your eyelids, and the tops of your feet. Shop here.

    3. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Moisturizer

I’ve gone through my fair share of daily moisturizers with good SPF, and I keep coming back to this one again and again. It doesn’t leave a white cast, it moisturizes my super-dry skin, and it works well under make up.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Tip: Wear a moisturizer with sunscreen EVERY. DAY. Yes, even non-sunny ones! Coat your neck and chest with this stuff too while you’re at it! Shop here

    4. BLUE LIZARD Mineral Sunscreen Sensitive SPF 50+ Spray

An under-the-radar winner, Blue Lizard is one of few sprays that won’t burn my skin after being in salt water. Their lotion is also fantastic! Apply a lotion before leaving the house, and use a spray when you need to re-apply on the go. It is particularly great for beach days. Spray is so much easier when you’re out on the sand! Shop here

    5. Colorscience Pro Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush

For oily-skinned gals, a mineral powder SPF is the world’s greatest invention. This one comes in a few different tints and has an extremely subtle gleam finish to help you glow while being protected. Shop here

‘Redhead Friendly’ Tip: Working your sunscreen into your makeup routine ensures you’ll never skip it. It’s also super easy to throw this brush in your bag for reapplication throughout the day.

    CS_Sunf.50Med

    6. Supergoop AcaiFusion Lip Balm SPF 30

Many lip balms with SPF leave a weird violet tinge. Not cute. This one, thankfully, only leaves a delightful pink tint while protecting your lips. I’d use it even without the SPF. Lips are one of those spots people always forget to protect. But trust me, a lip sunburn is no joke. Shop here

How To Detox Redhead Skin: From One Redhead To Another

Whether I’m getting home from my outside-all-day job or from a challenging hike, the first thing I like to do is detox my redhead skin. After any form of exercise or sweating, it’s good to get the dirt out of your pores as soon as possible. I prefer running to going to the gym (it’s free and I get to come home immediately and collapse in the grass) but when I do hit the gym, I make sure to bring a travel-sized bottle of face wash so that I don’t have to sit in the car knowing that my skin is going to break out at any second.

Even on days when you’re not exercising, it can be just as good for your mind as it is for your skin to give it a good detox.

      1. Light Facial Exfoliator

First, I use a light facial exfoliator that’s good for sensitive skin. This is a great way to clean deep down into pores to remove any makeup, sweat or dirt. I rub the exfoliator in small, circular motions all over my face and neck, and then I splash my face with water to make sure all of it is washed off. This leaves your skin feeling baby smooth!

READ: The 3 Best Exfoliators for Redheads

      2. Liquid Face Wash

Secondly, I use a liquid face wash to clean the remainder of what is left behind in the surface after my pores have been cleared. You’ll notice how smooth your skin feels already from this double dose of detox! Instead of using my hands to splash my face with water, I allow the waterfall to do the rinsing, which feels very natural and relaxing.

      3. Gently Pat Skin Dry

Once I’m all done washing, I take a soft towel and gently pat my skin dry. Rubbing your skin with a towel will only irritate it; allow for the products to do their job to soothe your skin.

      4. Argan Oil & Coconut Oil

I have always sworn by argan oil and coconut oil as amazing moisturizers. Now that your pores have been opened by the warm water and exfoliation, massaging oil into your skin in circular motions allows for your skin to fully soak up all of the good nutrients. This is a great last step to your skin detox because you are able to feel the smoothness of your skin after its cleanse, all while relaxing with a personal oil massage.

Enjoy your beautiful redhead skin. Rock it like a Redhead!

Mane of Thrones: The Redhead Women of The HBO Hit Show

Summer is here and if you’re anything like me, your hair hair is getting brighter, freckles are becoming bolder, and our iron thrones are fiercer- Game of Thrones season came and went!

If redheads really do make up only 2% of the world’s population, then Game of Thrones has cast about 1.9% over the past several seasons. (And, the other .1% is still waiting for my callback.)What can we say? Red hair has always been a symbol of royalty, and these beautiful, powerful, fiery redheads sure know how to play the game of thrones.

So, let’s take a look at what we can learn from these women about embracing that elusive power that comes with a great head of red hair.

Margaery Tyrell (played by Natalie Dormer):

Though only recently named the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Margaery Tyrell has long been the Queen of “Throwing Shade.”  No one escapes Margaery’s slanting glare.  When she walks into a room, she owns everything and everyone in it–especially if that room contains a future King–and pity the fool who stands in her way.  If there’s anything we can learn from Margaery, it’s that when it’s necessary to show someone a little of that redheaded attitude, let’s at least have the decency to do it while wearing blue or green!

      margaery-tyrell-game-of-thrones-redhead

Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner):

It’s not easy being Queen.  At times being in charge may feel more like being a prisoner of your own castle.  Sansa learned this the hard way, and what we can all learn from her is that sometimes you just have to let your hair down, and let it go.  Living a rigid and structured life is stressful!  Jobs and school can be emotionally and physically draining.  How happy were we to see an empowered Sansa finally escape that life, loosen those hair pins, and let her long red waves flow free?  So, let’s take a note from her book, and make the time to relax this summer–lose the makeup, break from the hair products, and enjoy the power a little freedom provides.

      Sansa_Stark_game_of_thrones
Catelyn Stark (played by Michelle Fairley):

Redheads are often presumed to have a short-fuse, but in the case of Catelyn Stark, having a fiery temper is not always a bad thing.  Momma Stark is not going to let anyone hurt her babies or her friends, and anyone who attempts to do so is going to catch some heat.  I admit, I can get a little feisty when someone crosses my family or friends, but that’s only because redheads (at least those of us whose personalities mirror Catelyn Stark’s) are loyal to the bone.  It feels natural to lash out at those who hurt the people we love, but what we can learn from Momma Stark is as we grow in wisdom and maturity, we should discover how to show that loyalty without hurting others.  In doing so, we may gain, as Catelyn did, new allies who want to show loyalty to us as well.

      Catelyn-Tully-Stark-game-of-thrones-redhead

Melisandre “The Red Priestess” (played by Carice van Houten):

It is said that though Lady Melisandre wore no crown, every man in the room knew that she was the real queen.  Sometimes the best way to empower ourselves is simply to take action, and The Red Priestess is definitely a woman of action.  If she wants something, she takes it; and if she speaks it, she backs it up.  Melisandre teaches us to be women of our word, because our word has authority.  Even the “true king” Stannis Baratheon said, “I know little and care less of gods, but The Red Priestess has power.”

      melisandre

      Ygritte (played by Rose Leslie):

There’s nothing wrong with taking a walk on the wild side, (or, in the case of Ygritte, living there) as long as you’re smart enough to survive.  Her quick draw of an arrow and even quicker wit make her an untamable force to be reckoned with.  Ygritte teaches us that there is no muscle stronger than our brain–a lesson that Jon Snow was slow to learn–“You know nothing Jon Snow!”  Redheads are generally considered to have more courage, confidence, and intelligence than our brunette or blonde counterparts, and there may be some truth to this.  After all, when was the last time you heard someone tell a dumb-redhead joke?  If you think about it, it’s really just survival of the fittest–our population is so much smaller, because only the smartest have survived!  The bullying and taunting we endure through adolescence only thickens our skin and sharpens our wit!  As redheads, we should all learn from Ygritte and embrace the power of knowledge.  It may be the greatest weapon at our disposal.

      ygritte-1

We’re all different and demonstrate our power in unique ways, but remember this:  if you want to play the game of thrones, your better do it with the mane of thrones, and Rock it like a Redhead!
