17 Best Hair Brushes For Your Red Hair

Don't grab any brush, choose one that has been tested and approved 'Redhead Friendly'

If you think your redhead skin is the only sensitive part of your body, you’re forgetting about your red hair and scalp. Though your skull is hard, your scalp is quite tender. It has more blood vessels than any other area of the body and lots of nerve endings. That’s why choosing hair products carefully is super important. Don’t grab any brush, choose one that has been tested and approved ‘Redhead Friendly’.

Best Budget:

Conair Velvet Touch Cushion Brush ($5)A versatile everyday brush that’s great for all hair lengths.

Best Splurge:

Mason Pearson Nylon & Boar Bristle Hair Brush ($140)Shocked by the price tag? Mason Pearson brushes have been around since 1885 and they are made with premium-grade, handmade boar bristle and a patented rubber-cushion pad that are gentle on the hair and scalp. Cult followers swear by this brand and brush –– saying there’s nothing that compares.

Best For Thick Red Hair:

Denman Cushion Brush Nylon Bristles ($20)This soft hair brush has seven rows of sculpted round-ended nylon pins to give softer, denser, increased movement and define curls in wet hair.

Best For Fine Red Hair:

Try a brush with extra-soft bristles like the Belula 100% Boar Bristle Hair Brush Set ($24). It will also stimulate the scalp to produce sebum (natural oil), the best organic anti-frizz treatment. Spornette DeVille Boar Bristle Oval Cushion Hair Brush is another great option if you have super fine red hair.

Best For Short Red Hair:

Have short red hair? Try a vented hair brush like Baasha Hair Vent Brush ($10). It will allow air to pass through the brush for faster drying and styling.

Best Teasing Brush:

Add volume and lock in fullness with this REVLON Perfect Style Softness and Shine Teasing Brush ($4).

Best For Sectioning Red Hair:

Diane Ionic Anti-Static Rat Tail Comb ($3) is perfect for precisely parting, teasing, coloring, and sectioning hair for braids and other elaborate styles.

Best For Coloring, Using A Color Depositing Shampoo, Conditioner or Mask:

Best For Long Red Hair:

Stick to this ghd Paddle Brush ($35) if you have long red hair. It won’t generate static but instead, create straight and sleek blowouts and smooth red hair.

Curly-haired redheads fave around this Wet Brush Original Detangler ($7) that features exclusive ultra-soft intelliflex bristles to glide through tangles and knots with ease. It won’t cause breakage or damage.

Best For Blowouts:

Want to get the same salon blowout results at home? It all comes down to the brush and technique. Try Ceramic+Ion Speed XL Round Thermal Brush 1 3/4” ($25) to create seamless body with its absolutely snag-free, wavy soft-tip bristles that are gentle on the scalp. The large holes will crate faster drying, too!

Best For Bangs:

Yes, you need a brush specifically for bangs. Diane Thermal Round Wood Brush ($8) is a great affordable option that will glide easily through bangs; whether thick or thin.

Best For Damaged Red Hair:

Tangle Teezer’s award-winning Original Detangling Hairbrush ($10) will allow you to brush your red hair with minimum fuss, breakage, and damage, leaving you with glossy locks.

Best Detangler:

The unique cone-shaped plastic bristles on this Detangling Brush from Crave Naturals ($12) works to separate the hair sideways instead of down, gently unraveling even the toughest tangles. It’s kid-friendly, too!

Best Eco-Friendly Brush:

Wet Brush Go Green Oil Infused Watermelon Brush ($10) is a great eco-friendly, biodegradable brush.

Best Massaged Brush:

New to a massage brush? Massage your scalp while in the shower using HEETA Scalp Care Hair Brush with Soft Silicone Scalp Massager ($7) to ease itchiness, promote blood circulation and get a nice relaxing massage at home.

Podcast S3, Ep11: Redhead Makeup with Natalie Cosco, Jane Levy’s Makeup Artist

Adrienne + Stephanie are big fans of NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”. The main character/redhead is Zoey Clarke (played by actress Jane Levy). The show is centered around the ability Zoey has to hear people’s thoughts in song. Her redhead character is stubborn, determined, and loving. She’s also gorgeous and her makeup is always on-point!

On and off stage, Natalie Cosco is the woman behind Jane Levy’s redhead makeup looks. Natalie is an accomplished makeup artist in both film, print and TV. Her career spans 30 years of achievements including iconic productions as: “Smallville”, “Fear the Walking Dead” – Season 1, “The Mountain Between Us”, “The Edge of Seventeen”, “30 Days of Night (Dark Days)”, “The Man in The High Castle” and “The Art of Racing in The Rain.”

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST BELOW, CLICK HERE FOR iTUNES OR SEARCH FOR “HOW TO BE A REDHEAD” WHEREVER YOU LISTEN TO PODCASTS

Adrienne and Stephanie were so excited to ask Natalie the following questions and for you to hear her answers/tricks/techniques:

    1. Let’s talk about redhead makeup! Besides your current work on “Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist”, we know you worked on so many films and TV shows throughout your career. What do you love about working on a redhead? Are there any special products, shades etc. that you use when working on a redhead?

    2. We LOVED the look you did on Jane Levy at the Golden Globes this year. For those who didn’t see it (and we’ll post it on HowtobeaRedhead.com), Jane Levy was wearing a navy blue dress. She had on a colorful lip, a smokey eye and great brows. We’ll break down those choices in a minute. But, the difference with this look is that the 2021 Golden Globes was virtual! Did the virtual nature of the show play a part in Jane’s makeup look? Should you do your makeup differently when on Zoom? If so, how?

    Products used:

Eyes: Mix of a matte charcoal gray, black matte and a pink/burgundy to the bottom lid from HUDA Beauty for the smokey eye. They did individual lashes and a cat eye.

    Lipstick: Rose Hermes Lipstick

Eyebrows: Jane Levy isn’t a natural redhead so her natural brows are ashy. Natalie has to bring warmth (and red tones) into them. She used a mix of Glossier, Colorpop and Anastasia Brow Powder.

    5. As a makeup artist, what is your go-to makeup product?

She recommends always doing a brow and lip before leaving the house — they make the biggest statement.

    6. What is your favorite concealer and how should you prep your under eye area before applying this product? And, how do you deal with creases in the concealer?

Concealer: To prevent creasing, don’t put on a rich and heavy moisturizer before applying concealer. She applies a Sea Buckthorn oil and/or Charlotte Tilbury moisturizer right up to Jane Levy’s eye area and puts concealer over it. She loves Charlotte Tilbury for concealer choices too. Use a translucent powder to lock it all in.

Podcast S3, Ep10: Kicking Off Melanoma Awareness Month with VERTRA Premium Suncare

The How to be a Redhead podcast is back! Join us:

Redheads are prone to melanoma more than any other hair color. Sunscreen knowledge is so essential and if you’ve listened to our podcast (or read HowtobeaRedhead.com for the last decade), you know the H2BAR Team is passionate about skincare for redheads. The month of May is the beginning of Melanoma Awareness Month and that’s why Adrienne + Stephanie’s first guest for the month of May is Evelynn Moz from VERTRA Premium Suncare. She is the Product Line Manager and passionate about sunscreen.

It’s scary because a recent study found that many of the American sunscreen products labeled as “broad spectrum” block UVB rays but don’t block UVA rays. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. Vertra is committed to creating a premium sunscreen line that is infused with non-nano, mineral UVA/UVB blockers that meet the maximum 80-minute FDA water and sweat resistance ratings. They’re also paraben-free and great for redhead skin.

*Hint, Hint*: VERTRA is one of the sunscreen brands inside May H2BAR Box! Subscribe here.

For over a decade now Vertra has provided the ocean’s best athletes with superior UV protection with a patented processes. Vertra is now considered the ultimate skincare for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

We talk with Evelynn about her work with Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Kate Somerville and now VERTRA. As an athlete herself, she was a competitive soccer player in her teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe, so she knows how bad sunburns can be.

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST BELOW, CLICK HERE FOR iTUNES OR SEARCH FOR “HOW TO BE A REDHEAD” WHEREVER YOU LISTEN TO PODCASTS

    We discuss about the following:

    1. Let’s talk about VERTRA! Tell us a bit about the brand? Why was it created?

    2. Although the brand has roots in the professional surf industry, the products that Vertra makes can be used not only for any sport, but also for daily wear.  Vertra is so beneficial for young athletes, so that they are better protected and more knowledgeable than the generations that came before us. We heard you were a competitive soccer player in your teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe!

    3. We’re so excited to have your Pearl White Sticks 50+ a part of our May H2BAR Box. It’s an amazing product. Why is this product so unique?

    4. Why is reef-safe important?

    5. Not a lot of consumers know the difference between all the ingredients in sunscreen. Why is Octinoxate & Oxybenzone harmful?

    6. We know the VERTRA products are 80 minute water-resistant. What does that exactly mean?

    7. What are some tips for after-sun care?

441 New Emojis Released But Redheads Are Excluded

Redheads are asking for different hair lengths, eye color shades, shade of red hair and more gender neutral options.

Apple has released iOS 14.5 which provides 441 new emojis to all iPhone and iPad users. There are vaccine-friendly redesigns of the syringe emoji, new gender options for people with beards and 200 skin tone combinations for couples. But, Twitter is asking, why don’t we have more redhead emoji options?

In November of 2019, Apple finally updated their emojis and gave the MCR1 community a male + female version of the redhead emoji (in an array of different skin colors too). In October of 2019, Apple has released a gender-neutral redhead to the emoji keyboard. To date, these are the redhead emojis available to use:

11 ‘Redhead Friendly’ Essentials You’ll Want to Use All Summer Long

Hats, sunscreen and sunnies are a redhead's BFF!

Preparation is key when it comes to staying safe in the sun as a redhead. Hats, sunscreen and sunnies are always going to be your best friends when that summer heat kicks in. Keeping your skin moisturized and protected will make a world of difference. Take pride in taking care of yourself and give your skin the boost it needs to look and feel better.

Here are 11 ‘redhead friendly’ essentials you’ll want to use all summer long.

    1. Vibrating Eye Massager

Think of an eye massager as a healthier alternative to coffee to kickstart your energy in the mornings. Setting aside 10 minutes in the morning for an eye massage makes it easier to leave your comfy bed. It also reduces the appearance of wrinkles and puffy eyes.

    2. Water Bottle

Remember, hydration starts on the inside. If you get plenty of fluids, your skin will thank you. In the summer, you sweat more so you need to drink more too. This inspirational water bottle is a great way to always have water on the go. You can fill it up at a fountain or when you’re at a café. And to top it off, you get the added feel-good factor of knowing you’re doing your bit for the environment. It’s a win-win situation all around.

    3. Hydrating Day Cream

Are you on the lookout for a decent day moisturizer that can work as a base for your sunscreen? Avène Hydrance Optimale Rich Hydrating Cream will leave your skin moisturized but not greasy. This should be the second to last step in your skincare routine –– right before your sunscreen.

    4. Night Moisturizer

Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Cream & Face Moisturizer is a fantastic night cream that’ll leave you waking up with oh-so-soft skin.

    5. Vitamin C Cleanser

Body Shop’s  Vitamin C Daily Glow Cleansing Polish is top-notch for getting dirt out of those yucky pores. It’s a light exfoliator and face cleanser in one that’s gentle and great for those with sensitive skin.

    6. Micellar Water

Simple Water Boost Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin is a great pick-me-up during the day when your face needs a freshen-up. It can be used for so many things so it’s an all-rounder. It works as a cleanser, a make-up remover and a toner. If you’re in a rush, you can pour a little on a cotton pad and cleanse your face quickly and thoroughly without even needing to go to the sink. It’s very handy to have in the handbag for when you finish working out, no one wants sweat sitting in their pores.

    7. Sunscreen

VERTRA’s Ghost Face Stick SPF 50, featured in the May H2BAR Box, is a great non-greasy, face sunscreen that provides SPF 50+ protection with 80-minutes of usage upon application. Note: it leaves a visible “white translucent” barrier on the skin, so make sure you blend, blend, blend!

    8. UPF Clothing

Look stylish while protecting your skin with Coolibar’s UPF 50+ Women’s Oceanside Tunic Dress. This dress is made with UPF 50+ material meaning it blocks 98% of UV radiation.

    9. Hat

Similar to sunscreen, a hat should be your best friend. Kyi Kyi Ribbon Trim Sun Hat is perfect for the summer months ahead.

    10. Color Depositing Shampoo

Looking to ‘up’ your red hair without having to turn to dye or a trip to the salon? Try a color depositing shampoo from Tressa. It’s easy to use and you’ll see results within minutes.

    11. Sunglasses

These bold frames from Quay PSA 45mm Square Sunglasses will give you a timeless retro-inspired silhouette mixed with a cool minimalist look.

7 ‘Redhead Friendly’ Products for Cystic Acne

Approved by a redhead who has battled with cystic acne her entire life

Growing up as a redhead with cystic acne, I was put on tons of different medications and over-the-counter treatments. For those unfamiliar with the term cystic acne, this type of acne involves deep, painful lumps or boils under the skin called nodules or cysts. It’s unlike regular acne that consists of blackheads, whiteheads and pimples that disappear fairly quickly.

I finally went on Accutane* treatment to help clear my skin. While Accutane made my skin unbelievably dry and even more sensitive than normal (especially for a redhead), it left me with clear skin and a wealth of knowledge on acne products. Accutane is not a medicine for everyone, mainly because it causes the skin to dry rapidly and you must be very cautious about sun exposure — even more so than normal for redheads.

As a redhead with cystic acne, trying to find products that work and are gentle on the skin can be difficult.

Here are seven products that have helped with my cystic acne:

      1. Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser

My everyday face wash, Clean & Clear Acne Cleanser, works like magic. Whenever I have a breakout, I feel like my redhead skin is clearer in a matter of a week. Made with 10% benzoyl peroxide, this kills bacteria lying on the skin long after using the face wash. For redheads using any products containing this chemical, be careful because it does cause the skin to dry. Still, this face wash is sure to help clear your skin of any unwanted bacteria lying around.

      2. PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash Benzoyl Peroxide Maximum Strength

This dermatologist-recommended face wash is the number one acne wash in the U.S. PanOxyl helps cleanse one’s back, face, and chest from acne-causing bacteria. Plus, it helps prevent new acne from forming. While as a redhead, one has to be cautious with products containing benzoyl peroxide; they have been my skin savior in fighting off stubborn acne.

      3. Sunday Riley All About Acne Kit

From Sunday Riley, All About Acne is your go-to acne kit. This kit targets acne, enlarged pores, and surface redness. Complete with a ceramic slip cleaner, lactic acid cleanser, ultra-clarifying face oil, high-dose retinoid serum, and a sulfur spot treatment is everything for your skincare needs. These products are sustainable and cruelty-free, ideal for the redhead looking to live a greener lifestyle.

      4. JossLyn Witch Hazel Deep Cleansing Peel-Off Mask

Featured in the March H2BAR Box, this peel-off face mask is for all your skin needs. Made with natural ingredients, this mask helps removes extra oil from the skin to help protect against acne formation. This redhead-approved product is paraben, phthalate, and sulfate-free, perfect for sensitive skin.

      5. Neutrogena Oil-Free Salicylic Acid Acne Fighting Face Wash

While acne-fighting products with benzoyl peroxide are powerful in getting rid of stubborn acne, products like Neutrogena’s Acne-Fighting Face Wash made with salicylic acid are ideal for a redhead’s sensitive skin type. This face wash uses skin-soothing technology to protect against irritation and over-drying perfect for the redhead who is always rushing out the door in the morning and can’t worry about moisturizing. This face wash is ideal for redheads who want a benzoyl peroxide strength but is gentle on the skin. Being a redhead, have always been careful about benzoyl peroxide, but it has been the only product to keep my acne away. For any redhead who is limited to benzoyl peroxide products, make sure to have a strict moisturizing regime.

      6. CeraVe Face Moisturizer, SPF 30

Those who have acne may skip the moisturizer step because they are afraid to clog their pores. This is a great moisturizer for the morning and night, even though it is marketed for morning use. It is a fragrance free, oil free, non-comedogenic, paraben-free moisturizer. It doesn’t clog pores and keeps the skin soft — especially if you’re using a product with benzoyl peroxide. This product is also amazing because it has SPF 30 in it. Those with acne need to prevent sunburns because it can aggravate the skin; this CeraVe face moisturizer has SPF 30 in it too!

      7. Aveeno Face Moisturizer

Formula is oil-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores as it hydrates skin. The tone-evening moisturizer is also non-greasy and wearable under makeup. It also contains SPF 15 to give you some sun protection.

Cheers from one redhead with cystic acne to another! Here’s to finding products that work on our unique skin type. Rock it like a Redhead!

*We have not tested or approved Accutane as redhead-approved. This is simply a story about the author’s road to acne-free skin. Please consult your doctor and/or dermatologist before using any medications.

      Confidence

Nicole Kidman Transforms Into Lucille Ball For New Movie

But many think Debra Messing should play the part. What do you think?

Nicole Kidman is filming the upcoming Aaron Sorkin-directed film Being the Ricardos, which follows late comedy icon Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz, played by Javier Bardem. The film will focus on Ball and Arnaz’s life while filming the sitcom I Love Lucy. It will explore the challenges of working together and their marriage, later ending their marriage in 1960.

Kidman was photographed in Los Angeles this week and we must say, she really fits the part. Thanks to social media, we have an inside look into the film:

Cate Blanchett was initially set to star as Ball before a scheduling conflict got in the way.

Last year, the cast of Will & Grace filmed a special I Love Lucy tribute episode and Messing was almost an exact replica of Ball. Now, many are turning to Twitter to share that Debra Messing should have been cast to play Ball, instead of Kidman.

So, fans assumed Messing was unavailable for the film. Debra tweeted back saying, “Oh no, I’m available.” But, in a 2020 Variety interview, Messing went on record stating she would never portray Ball saying she “would not even touch it” if offered to play the legendary comedian. “Like she is untouchable,” Messing said.

      https://twitter.com/DebraMessing/status/1348889502027313152?s=20

Regardless, we’re excited to see Lucille Ball on screen, even if it is portrayed by redhead actress, Nicole Kidman.
