New to Makeup? We've Got You Covered

If you don’t have a redhead makeup routine but want one this post is for you. Starting a makeup routine from scratch, especially if you’re no longer a teen, can feel daunting. Maybe you don’t know what products to buy, or even where to start with the application. Well, we’re here to help. Makeup routines don’t have to be complicated, you can start with the basics and grow your skills as needed if you want. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Find your skincare routine

The key to a good makeup routine is a good skincare routine. If you have your skincare routine down, you’re already one step ahead. If you don’t have a good skincare routine, it’s time to start one. Depending on your age, you will need different products, but the basics should include cleaner, eye cream, moisturizer, and SPF. You can add more later, but start with these.

Step 2: Learn about your skin

Before we get into how to apply makeup, let’s talk about a few things that will determine how you pick your products and what products you pick. When we’re young, we usually try a bunch of random things until we learn what works. But if you’re an adult redhead, you don’t want to go through the experimental phase for the basics, so knowing these things about your skin will help you be prepared to start shopping.

  • Undertones: Knowing your undertones will help you choose which shade of a product you might need. This is especially helpful for things like foundation and concealer. Warm undertones lean more yellow, while cool undertones lean more blue. There are also neutral undertones.
  • Skin Type: Knowing your skin type will also help you when it comes to shopping for products. if you have sensitive skin, as most redheads do. You will want to be very careful when testing new products. You can also have dry, oily, or combination skin. When you shop for products you will see them marketed towards different undertones as well as skin types. Once you know yours, look for that when shopping for makeup.
  • Target Areas: Why do you want to wear makeup? Is it because it’s fun? Or are you looking to enhance or minimize some features of your face? For example, if you have acne you will need a more full-coverage foundation. If you want to enhance your eyes, you’re going to want more eye products like eyeshadow and eyeliner. Look up each product and see which area it focuses on.

Step 3: Shop the basics

To start, you will only need a few makeup items. Foundation, concealer, blush, brow gel, mascara, and a lip color. You can add things like contour or bronzer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and highlight once you’re comfortable with the basics. Looking for product recommendations?

When you go makeup shopping, go in person the first few times. This will allow you to swatch things and also you can ask for samples from stores like Sephora to try at home before you commit. You can also ask the employees for assistance choosing the right products.

Step 4: Learn the steps + watch tutorials

Learn the order in which to apply your products. Makeup application should go in roughly this order:

  1. Skincare
  2. Prime
  3. Foundation
  4. Concealer
  5. Setting Powder
  6. Bronzer
  7. Blush
  8. Highlighter
  9. Eyeshadow
  10. Eyeliner
  11. Mascara
  12. Lips

Then, once you’ve got that down, learn the technique through tutorials. There are tons of makeup tutorials online that will help you learn how to apply and give you product recommendations. Look on TikTok or YouTube for beginner makeup tutorials, redhead makeup tutorials, and even reviews and tutorials featuring products or techniques you see.

Step 5: Practice, Practice, Practice

The best way to get a good makeup routine down is to practice. Do your makeup routine from start to finish every day. Take your time and stop to watch a tutorial if you need to. A great time to try new makeup is right before you shower, that way there’s no pressure to make it perfect and you can easily wash it off. Try new products, try new techniques, and learn what works for your skin. Keep plenty of makeup wipes and cleanser on hand to wash it off if you mess up. Always practice your makeup in natural lighting so you can make sure it’s blended and you’ve got a good color match.

Rock it like a Redhead!
