Redheads Rejoice: Emerald Green is Named the 2013 Color of the Year!

By: Rebecca Leslie

Pantone recently announced the 2013 Color of the Year and redheads everywhere should be rejoicing! Emerald was declared the ‘It’ color that will dominate pallettes in fashion, graphic design, beauty design and lifestyle accessories.

Red hair and fair-medium complexions are perfectly complemented by this gemstone hue. May’s birthstone color can be a bold, confident choice with patterns, tops and dresses. It can also play beauty sidekick to black or white with sassy shoes, a classy clutch or jazzed-up jewelry.

On the color wheel, green is complementary to red, so it goes without saying that every “ginger” should jump on the green trend this season.
Here are few ways to incorporate green in your life:

1. Green Handbag: Many of us choose to wear a lot of black or dark colors during the winter months but by adding a bright emerald handbag, any neutral outfits becomes fresh and updated!

2. Accessorize: Emerald toned jewelry and it will add an exotic, rich look to any ensemble and will naturally play up a redhead’s coloring.

3. High Heels: It has been said that a girl can accomplish anything in a perfect pair of heels and emerald heeled beauties definitely make a statement. A pop of color in this hot hue is not only pretty but fashion savvy!

4. Eyeshadow: Get out of your makeup rut and give emerald green eyeshadow a try. It will give you a fresh, new look!

Wearing “redhead friendly” colors to your advantage can be a beauty passport to instant glamour; so get on the emerald green trend this winter and Rock it like a Redhead.

    Meet Donna W.

Donna loves being a redhead because she feels different and unique (in a great way!), loves how people comment on how redheads are a dying breed, embraces the redhead nicknames, ‘carrot top,’ ‘firecracker,’ and thinks it’s funny that almost every guy she encounters says they have a “thing for redheads.”

    Take Control of Your Skin

According to a Livestrong Article, “Redheads can be more prone to acne because they have skin that is actually thinner than other people’s, placing nerves and blood vessels closer to the outermost layer of skin.”

Many women, even those that have surpassed their teenage years, suffer from acne and/or breakouts.  There are many dermatologists that claim that using natural remedies is the best fight against acne and some over-medicate to get rid of those nasty pimples.

And although both extremes might work for some women, most redheads need a simple skin regimen that helps control the skin. Here is a daily skin regimen for your red life:

    1. Cleanser & Lotion: Before bed, wash your face with a cleanser that is free of harmful chemicals and works well with your ivory, sensitive skin. Opt for a product like Origins Checks & Balances. Next, make sure to apply a light weight lotion. Tip: When choosing a lotion for redheads, make sure the lotion is almost clear because this gives insight into what is going into your skin; if it’s too heavy, it could cause breakouts.

    2. Sleep: It cures many acne problems because your skin is rejuvenated after those glorious eight hours of rest.

    3. Make sure to not over wash your face: Because a redhead’s skin is so sensitive and thin, if you feel like your skin doesn’t need another wash in the morning or night, simply splash lukewarm water on your face, dry and apply the lightweight lotion before brushing on your daily foundation.

Listen to your skin and give it what it needs.

Now, sit back and enjoy your beautiful skin.

5 Things Your Skin Craves Daily

How many of you redheads walk down the beauty aisle and get confused with the profusion of complex products and ask yourselves, “Which is best for my red hair and ivory skin?” With so many products on the market, it is important to know what your skin wants.

Here are the top five things your redhead, sensitive skin craves on a daily basis:

    1. Antioxidants: Redheads have a reddish pigment which is an inadequate filter of sunlight; therefore, a redhead’s skin is more susceptible to sunburn, skin cancer and wrinkling with age. Also, a redhead’s eumelanin (dark pigments) levels are low and do not get as much natural antioxidant protection. That’s why it is essential to look for antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, and E, which assist in making the skin glow from within, while slowing down the aging process. These antioxidants are in your fruits and vegetables, too!

    2. Keep Your Skin Moisturized: Use creams, oils and lotions to keep your skin protected for the outside elements and to maintain a healthy complexion.

    3. Water: It is essential to drink lots of water to keep your skin clean and hydrated.

    4. Sunscreen: Your fair skin requires added protection from the sun- even during the winter months! Apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 which protects against UVA and UVB rays!

    5. Apply a Foundation: Once you have hydrated, filled up on antioxidants, drank the proper amounts of water and apply sunscreen; never leave the house without a brush of light, mineral powder (or foundation if you need better coverage). The light powder will keep the skin clear and help harsh elements from hurting skin.

14 Best Eye Creams for Your Redhead Skin

The skin around the eyes is ten times thinner than the skin on the face; making it extra fragile. As time passes and our collagen breaks down, the upper lids loosen, the lower lids get puffy and fine lines start to appear. This area is also most susceptible to environmental damage from pollution and UV rays –– ouch!

Every redhead, no matter what age, should incorporate an eye cream or gel into their redhead skincare routine. These specific eye products are designed to de-puff, brighten and work specifically on this super delicate area of the skin.

Here are three tips when applying an eye cream:

    1. After your serums, apply the cream around your eye twice a day, morning and night. Gently tap the product around your eye using your ring finger as this finger has the lightest touch.

    2. If you have noticeably dark circles under the eyes, it’s is highly recommended by beauticians to opt for creams with vitamin K. Doctors use it before cosmetic surgery to prevent bruising.

    3. It is said that gels present faster results than creams, but every person’s skin is different. Try both options and see which one is best for you.

6 Tips to Keep Your Fair Skin Protected All Winter Long

Keep your redhead skin in tip-top condition this winter

    Updated: August 20, 2020

A redhead’s skin complexion is notoriously sensitive and easily irritated; and the cold, winter weather can cause even more irritation! There are a plethora of winter threats to delicate skin like chapped lips and noses, dry skin, and a trigger of redness patches.

    What’s a redhead to do?

Here are a few tips to keep your skin in top condition this winter:

    1. Avoid Heat: Though it may be tempting to indulge in a hot bath or shower on a cold day, very hot water will dehydrate sensitive skin and could cause broken capillaries that lead to a red, ruddy appearance. Try to keep showers and baths brief and stick to lukewarm temperatures. Also, keep indoor environments on the cool side because forced heat is known to irritate delicate skin.

    2. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen: Though the sun may be less intense in the winter months, UV rays are still present. Always apply sunblock before leaving the house and by doing so, you will avoid chapped skin! See our recommended sunscreens here.

    3. Be Gentle: Sensitive skin calls for gentle cleansing.

Tip: Stick with an old favorite like Cetaphil to cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

    4. Moisturize: Because the harsh, cold elements dry our delicate complexions. Make sure to moisturize daily to keep your skin’s PH balance in check. Peter Thomas Roth Oil-Free Moisturizer contains azulene which is known to soothe and restore hydration to dry, distressed skin. Or, opt for an oil like tea tree oil.

    5. Get the Red Out: Many redheads are prone to redness and rosacea; the winter months can often make those symptoms even worse. Try Clinique Redness Solutions Regimen — it will cool and soothe irritated skin while blanching redness.

    6. Mask it: Whether you’ve been skiing or attending a football game, being out in the winter weather for prolonged periods can cause even well behaved skin to flare up! When in need of a fast fix, try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask for immediate relief and soothed skin.

8 Ways to Fake a Good Night Sleep-Redhead Style

Redheads have very busy lives and always want to look fabulous the next morning! Here are a few tips on how to not look tired the next morning:

READ: FAKE AWAKE: LOOK BRIGHT EYED WHEN COFFEE IS NOT ENOUGH

    1. Hydrate Your Skin: These are a quick and great way to reduce tired looking and puffy eyes. Make sure to keep them in the fridge or in the freezer at all times. Leave it on your eyes 5 to 10 minutes. If you don’t have a Cold Eye Mask, just fill a large bowl with ice cubes and cold water, soak a cloth into the water and gently press the area around your eyes. Then, place the cloth over your eyes for 5 minutes. Repeat if necessary. Dry your face and continue with your usual face cleansing and moisturize routine.

    2. Concealer: After a great party, redheads have to cope with very noticeable under eye dark circles. So, concealer is a must! Right after you cleanse and moisturize your face, dot concealer only where the dark circles appear. Use your ring finger or a soft eye-shadow brush to blend it all the way up to the lids. The warmth of your finger will melt the concealer perfectly into your skin. Redheads should opt for a  creamy concealer like Korres “Quercetin & Oak Antiageing & Antiwrinkle” Concealer.

    3. Eyelashes: Another tip to avoid looking tired after a long night, is to perfectly curl your eye lashes. This will make your eyes look wide and awake.

    4. Mascara: After you curled your eye lashes, apply a couple of coats of mascara on top and bottom lashes. This too, will make you look more awake and less tired.

    5. Bright Lipstick: Apply a bright red, pink or coral lipstick. This will draw full attention to your lips and less attention to your eyes. Opt for a great lipstick color like Topshop “Mischief.”

    6. Coral Blush: Nothing will make you look more awake and fresh than blushed cheeks. Apply a coral or pink blush to the apple of your cheeks and a small amount of highlighter above it, and your face will glow.

    7. Gold  Eyeshadow: To look really awake, dab your ring finger into a eyeshadow like the Urban Decay “Vanilla” eyeshadow that has a golden- pearly tone and apply it into the inside corner of your eyes. This will make your eyes look more awake and brighter.

    8. White Pencil Eyeliner: Line inside your eyes, just above the lash line with a white eye liner to make your eyes look wider.

Are You a Natural Redhead? You Might Feel More Pain

Most redheads have heard this over and over again, “Are you a natural redhead? You might feel more pain.”

New York Post article stated, “Medical research is zeroing in on what makes redheads feel pain more acutely than the rest of us, why they’re more susceptible to developing melanoma and why they have more drug allergies.”

READ: STUDY: NATURAL REDHEADS COULD BE AT GREATER RISK OF MELANOMA WITHOUT SUN EXPOSURE

And.. redheads need more anesthesia, too.

It has been proven that redhead’s need larger doses of anesthesia and are often resistant to local pain blockers like novocaine. Researchers believe redheads are more sensitive to pain because of a mutation in a gene that affects hair color.

A mutation in the MC1R gene results in the production of a substance called pheomelanin that results in red hair and fair skin.”

Next time you’re at the doctors, make sure to bring up these “redhead discoveries!”
