3 Ways To Take Your Red Hair from Summer to Fall

By: Guest Writer, Kaylyn from SalonPulse.com

Since autumn/Redhead Season is right around the corner, I thought it might be time to share my favorite tips for taking your red locks from summer to fall.

Personally, my wild curly hair is damaged from hours of summer sun, using my straightener way too much (I’m addicted to my Chi), applying a ton of harmful styling chemicals and soaking up all the nasty NYC air pollutants.

Needless to say, my hair is pooped and needs to be revitalized for the autumn months.

Here’s what I’ve been doing to wake-up my tresses and get them perkier again:

1. Deep condition at least once a week.

This is one of the top things my stylist recommends, and it does help a lot; especially for ladies that do heat styling or have naturally dry, frizzy hair like me. There are plenty of cheap options on the market that won’t break the bank. I’ve been using Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Moist [Also featured in the February 2017 H2BAR Box] for years and it’s fabulous.

2. Schedule a hair appointment.

Have your hair trimmed, or be brave and get a brand new haircut. I recently got a cut and asked my stylist to only cut ½ an inch off the ends because I didn’t want to lose length, but hey, anything helps. My ends were pretty dry, and just getting that teeny trim made my hair more bouncy.

3. Try not to over shampoo.

This can be hard for those ladies who are use to shampooing everyday; but seriously, if you break the habit, your red, beautiful hair will thank you. Why? Natural oils are good for the hair and the scalp.

Love your red hair. Love yourself and Rock it like a Redhead!

Sound Off: Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger Says Millionaires Don’t Want Redheads

By: Guest Author, Courtney Leiva

This week in entertainment news, Millionaire Matchmaker host, Patti Stanger, claimed again millionaires [in her club] do not like redheads.

She was quoted saying, “I can’t get my millionaires to date a redhead. It has nothing to do with me. I can’t make my millionaires pick what I want.”

And it doesn’t just stop with red hair, Stanger also states that men don’t go for ladies with curly hair either. So, if you’re a curly haired redhead, in Stanger’s opinion, you’re not dating material.

“Men who are wealthy like straight hair, they like to run their hands through it, not get tangled in there..” Stanger claimed.

What do you all think about this?

In my opinion, it is ridiculous! Going red is the hottest hair trend and natural redheads are gorgeous. From my experience, there isn’t much truth to Miss Patti’s red haired comments.

Postpartum: Is It a Redhead Trait?

Bryce Dallas Howard, known for her role in Twilight and the recent movie, The Help, is a stunning pregnant redhead and many reporters have said she “radiates warmth.” We agree!

Although, Bryce has been talking candidly about how she suffered a deep postpartum depression following the birth of her son, Theo, 4.

In a recent interview she said, “It was so unexpected and went on for so long, 18 months. This time around I’m not as worried about things and while I really don’t want it to happen again, it’s not something I can necessarily control. If it happens, hopefully I’m more prepared and I’ll get help earlier.”

There isn’t any scientific evidence that redheads experience postpartum, but H2BAR wanted to take this story to our redheaded readers: Did you experience this too?

Although not a natural redhead, Marcia Cross, said she was freaked out while pregnant, but once her twins came she “[was] the happiest creature on the planet.”

Why Redheads Should Wear The Color Yellow

Yellow For Redheads

Edited: March 17, 2021

Redheads should not be afraid to wear yellow. It can be a very complementary ‘Redhead Friendly’ color –– if done right. Keep reading for four tips on how to incorporate yellow in your redhead wardrobe.

1. Choose the right yellow

Yellow mustard is a great ‘redhead friendly’ option for redheads since it includes brown undertones. Try a stylish, yet simple sundress. A floral cami dress or subtle skirt is another great way to lightly incorporate yellow into your wardrobe.

2. Break up yellow

Opt for a yellow floral print or stripe t-shirt. You can also choose to color block. A yellow skirt with a blue top is great for a mod color, block look. Yellow looks great with dark jeans. Try pairing a yellow blouse with a denim skirt or jean jacket.

3. Accessorize

If you buy a yellow dress, don’t be afraid to add accessories to break up the outfit. A brown belt and gold jewelry look stunning paired with yellow. If you’re into headbands, try a scarf or knotted headband to make your red hair pop.

4. Rock leopard

Leopard is so in right now. Most leopard prints include yellow, so it’s a win-win!

5. Confidence

Contemplating if you can pull off yellow? Try it! Simply sweep up our red hair and strut your stuff.

Sugar Coated: The Sweeter Side of Hair Removal for Redheads

While blondes may have more fun, brunettes do it better…redheads do it pain free.

Scientific studies have shown that redheads are actually less sensitive to pain compared to people with other hair colors as well as men – what wimps. JK!

According to Professor Jeffrey Mogil at McGill University in Montreal, Canada the gene called melanocortin found in people with red hair and fair skin, give not men but women a higher pain threshold.

Now that you know just how strong your ginger genes are, are you actually still afraid of getting waxed? Have you been pushing back your appointment to 1 hour before hitting the beach? Taking an acetaminophen before enduring the hot strips hoping it would lessen the pain?

Sissy! JK (again), I totally feel your pain for pain.

There is no need to be the weakest link of the Re(d)olution anymore with Sugaring – an all natural and painless alternative to getting rid of unwanted hair.

Owner Shobha Tummala of Shobha Salons located in New York City concocts a mixture of honey, lemon juice, glycerin and water and spreads it onto skin. Then using a piece of denim (yes, like jeans) lifts the hair from the follicle. Denim is used instead of traditional muslin or linen because it does not tug the hair nor cause irritation. Overall, this gentle experience reveals baby bottom bare skin without the ache.

What to try it at home? You can purchase Shobha Sugaring Kit ($30) that contains six washable and reusable strips of denim.

1 Recommended Product To Prolong Red Locks and Prevent Fading

Want to brighten your natural auburn, chestnut and red tones without having to commit to a long-term relationship with hair dying? Want to make your not-so-natural red hues last in between colorings?*

Well, now you can fight the fade with plants (not chemicals) by using Aveda’s Madder Root Shampoo and Madder Root Conditioner.

Since 1978, Aveda has been committed to creating botanically based beauty products that are better for consumers and our planet. Aveda’s Madder Root Shampoo and Madder Root Conditioner naturally restores red tones and is as foolproof as shampooing and conditioning, because it is!

With a single use, the gentle yet effective organic ingredients of madder root and red clover not only cleanse and moisturize hair follicles but deposits color formulated for red/red toned hair that washes out with any regular shampoo. Both products are safe to use on all hair types daily or as little as once a week to give color just a kick.

Tips from a devoted user:

  1. The longer the products (conditioner in particular as its more potent than shampoo) is left on hair before rinsing, the more vibrant your color will be. Just don’t exceed 5 minutes.
  2. Want to turn up vibrancy a notch? Turn on your hair dryer to low heat as the conditioner is setting for 2-5 mins.
  3. If you currently color your hair these products can be used in between colorings to make your color really last.

*If you’re a redhead by-choice, speak with your colorist about using this product. Not recommended if you have or had bleach in your hair.

7 Steps to Get Christina Hendricks’ LA Magazine Cover Look

Christina Hendricks was on the July 2010 cover of LA Magazine. Inside, she woke about dying her hair red at the age of 10:

“I was obsessed with the Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables. I decided I was Anne of Green Gables. There was something that spoke to me about her, and I wanted to have her beautiful red hair. So my mother said, “Let’s just go to the drugstore and get one of those cover-the-gray rinses!” My hair was very blond at the time, but it went carrot red. And I was over the moon. I went to school the next day and felt like myself. And then I went back [to that color] over and over again…”

Wasn’t her cover look stunning too? Here are the 7 easy steps to getting her look:

1. After prepping your skin, apply a loose mineral powder like NARS Soft Velvet powder.

2. With eyelash glue and a good tweezer, apply fake eyelashes.

3. Use a liquid black eyeliner to create that dramatic Christina Hendricks eye. Make sure to go wide on the top lid and also stroke on the bottom lid.

4. Apply a cranberry lipstick.

5. To create that glossy colored lip, apply a lipgloss over your lipstick.

6. Sequin Hats were all the rage last season- but why not bring them back this season? Urban Outfitters has a great selection.

7. Large (especially blue) costume necklaces always complement red hair.

7 Steps for Applying False Strip Eyelashes Perfectly

How to be a GLAMOROUS Redhead

Redheads are glamorous- everyone knows that! One of our favorite “getting ready techniques” is to apply fake eyelashes because they instantly make eyes fuller.

Since natural redheads usually have very light eyelashes, there are simple tricks we can apply to our makeup routine.

1. CHOOSING EYELASHES

The beauty of false eyelashes is they are all practically the same, no matter the price difference. We have bought $30.00 eyelash sets as well as $2.00 eyelash sets and the results are pretty much the same. It’s the application that matters.

You can choose full, exaggerated eyelashes or thinner, more natural eyelashes.

2. DARKEN YOUR EYELASHES

Never apply mascara before you apply false lashes. You don’t want blonde eyelashes peeking through, so our 1st step is to color in the root of our eyelashes with black pencil.

3. TRIM THE LASHES

When we open the package, we always trim the lashes on the side and the middle so the eyelashes fit perfectly to the eyelid. Our goal is to make them longer towards the outer corner of the eye then make sure there is barely any gap between the real eyelashes and the fake.

APPLICATION:We love the look of strip eyelashes. You can choose individual lashes, but this tutorial will focus on strip.

4. Squeeze eyelash glue onto the back of the eyelash set package and run the root of the lashes along the glue. Blow softly from side to side to make the glue a little less runny- you don’t want to burn your eyes!

5. Pick the lashes up with tweezers and bring it as close to your lash line as possible. Press from end to end and hold for 30 seconds.

6. Once dry, apply black eyeliner, following the line of the fake eyelash.

7. Apply mascara to join the eyelashes.

Optional: Use mascara on bottom lashes for an extra dramatic look.

3 Ways Redheads Can Cover Redness or Rosacea with Makeup

Many redheads face pink pigmented skin and/or rosacea and this can look and feel uncomfortable; not to mention that the color of this skin issue usually contrasts greatly with red hair.

Do you desire porcelain, crystal clear skin? Here are some easy makeup tips:

1. When covering up or hiding skin pigments, it is important to cover up red areas with green concealer. The green color will offset the red in an instant. Think of the color wheel! Recommended ‘Redhead Friendly’ Approved Product: Physician’s Formula, Green Concealer

2. A mineral/press powder will help give skin a great finish. Recommended ‘Redhead Friendly’ Approved Product: NARS Powder Foundation

3. Next, use a brown-ish/ warm toned bronzer to finish off the proper redhead look!

You’ll instantly notice that your skin looks gorgeous with your red locks.

Why Redheads Should Choose Apple Cider Vinegar for Shiny Hair

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is more than just a kitchen item. It can be used to strengthen and revitalize your red hair. ACV is naturally high in acetic acid and has a PH level close to that of human hair – around 3. When diluted with water, it can form into a great rinse to help bring your scalp and hair to its ideal acidity, meaning it balances the pH of the hair. It also works wonders on oily scalps. In other words, this rinse makes your red hair super shiny and healthy!

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

1 part apple cider vinegar
1 part cool water

Directions:

To revive your red hair to its days of smoothness, mix the apple cider vinegar and water together. After shampooing, pour the mixture into your hair. Let the apple cider vinegar concoction sit for a few minutes before rinsing fully with water. No need to use conditioner! The apple cider vinegar will leave hair feeling smooth and soft.

Tips:

1. Use a spray bottle to spritz the ACV mixture into your hair.

2. First time trying this rinse? Use a little at first, a tbsp or two to start, to see how your red hair takes to the rinse.

3. We recommend doing this rinse on your hair every 7-10 days. If you have super thin, opt to only 1-2 times a month.

4. Don’t worry! Your hair won’t smell like ACV once it dries.

5. Three ‘redhead friendly’ ACV options:

Bragg OrganicEden Foods for a standard ACV product

dpHUE Apple Cider Hair Rinse (seen in the H2BAR Box)

Would you try this at home? Rock it like a Redhead!
