The Perfect Loose Bun

The goal is to create a style that’s soft, pretty and most importantly, imperfect.  Loosening up the look of a traditional tight bun makes it more versatile and perfect for a redhead’s busy life.

1. To begin, backcomb thoroughly through the crown if you want lots of volume or if your hair is very fine or sleek. If you’d like your ‘do to be less voluminous, keep the backcombing to a minimum.

2. Spritz some individual strands with hairspray to help define them. These pieces could also be curled to add more body.

3. Once the desired amount of texture has been created, loosely pull the hair back into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and curl one or two-inch sections.

4. The next step is to loosely twist the hair and wrap it around the base of the ponytail. Hold the newly created bun in place and insert the bobby pins around the perimeter. If the ends of any layers have escaped, simply loop and pin.

5. If bangs have been sectioned out, unclip them and style as usual.  If long enough, they could be pinned or pushed behind the ears. The finishing touch is a generous blast of hairspray. Depending on hair texture, you might need minimum or maximum hold.

How to and How Not to Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a lot like toothpaste. If you don’t use enough (or don’t use it the right way) it’s not going to work. Are you spending a significant time in the sun in the upcoming weeks or months?

Use these 7 tips to apply sunscreen the correct way:

1. Dot sunscreen directly onto your face. Instead of squeezing a giant blob onto your hands and applying it. It is better if you dot your skin and rub it in circles until it’s absorbed into the skin.

2. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes. Sunscreen will stop working within a few hours; that means the stuff simply stops working, so you have to use more every couple hours. Think of it like mouthwash.

3. Put sunscreen on first, then your moisturizer. It is important to get your sunscreen working, then apply your moisturizer.

4. Use sunscreen daily. You get the majority of your vitamin D from walking to the car into the mall, so don’t use the “vitamin D excuse” as a reason not to apply sunscreen!

5. Apply It Thick. Use a tablespoon of sunscreen (of at least an SPF 50) on your face, and about two ounces for your body. Unless you slather on a thick layer, you’re probably just getting an SPF 30 out of your SPF 50.

6. Apply sunscreen before you go into the sun. Chemical sunscreens need time to be absorbed into the skin to work. So they require a head start of about 20 minutes.

7. Use zinc oxide if you need immediate sun protection.  Zinc oxide blocks the sun’s UV rays faster than sunscreen ingredients and should always be a ‘go to’ for redheads.

3 Ways To Make Your Red Hair More Vibrant Without the Use of Dyes

Your wish for vibrant red hair can easily be granted without putting your hair through the agony of toxic chemical hair dyes. Here are three easy ways to make your red hair more vibrant without the use of dyes:

1. Henna

Henna is a plant that produces flowers used for many different things from cosmetics to dying wool or leather. It is becoming a trend now to use henna to attain the perfect shade of red. Not only does it coat your hair in a gorgeous red, but it is also extremely healthy to use.

2. Cranberry Juice

This juice can give your red hair that extra tint if done right. Simply pour 1/2 a cup of 100% natural cranberry juice into your hair and blow-dry until the cranberry juice is dry. Or, after showering, apply the cranberry juice to your hair, sleep and rinse in the morning.

It has been said Kool-Aid can temporarily dye your hair red! Simply pour a cup of Kool-Aid in your red hair and keep on 2-3 hours or overnight for the best results.

Three Ways to Keep Your Red Hair Smelling Good

One of the latest beauty trends right now is to use scented hair mists instead of perfume. Hair mists are highly diffused, so they are a great alternative if you want a lighter version of your favorite perfume. In addition, they are a lovely way to freshen a second day ‘do and will make your red hair stand out even more.

Freckles: How To Care For Your Best Accessory

Most of us redheads are blessed with amazing natural freckles. Here are our top three tips for how to care for your best accessory –– aka your sun kisses:

1. USE LIGHT TO MEDIUM COVERAGE

The lighter the coverage of your makeup, the more your freckles will have a chance to show through. Light or medium coverage foundation like CoverGirl’s Clean Fresh in Fair/Light, It Cosmetics CC cream, or even a tinted moisturizer like Laura Mercier’s work great for keeping freckles visible.

2. AVOID HEAVY-HANDED APPLICATION

Just like applying a full coverage foundation will cover your freckles, heavy application of lighter coverage products like concealers will hide your freckles as well. If you are needing a more full spot concealing or building on your coverage, try using a damp beauty blender only in those areas.

3. PROTECT THEM FROM THE SUN

It’s essential to protect your freckles from the sun. Apply a facial and body care sunscreen every day –– and reapply every two hours.

Let your freckles glow. Rock it like a Redhead!

How to Achieve the Perfect Redhead Mermaid Beach Waves

Updated: July 1, 2021

Many redheads are compared to Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Her long red hair is envied amongst many, which is why redheads are called ‘real-life mermaids’. To celebrate this iconic Disney princess, here are 5 ways you achieve redhead mermaid beach waves this summer:

Method #1: Sea Salt Spray

Try a ‘redhead friendly’ sea salt spray if you have some natural wave to your red hair. This styling product will bring out your natural texture while making it look like you just got back from the ocean.

Simply spray (less is more) onto wet or damp red hair, and then cup some ends in your hand and scrunch up to the root.

Method #2: Three-Barrel Curling Iron

Use a three-barrel curling iron if you’re looking to achieve effortless curls.

Spray heat protectant on dry red hair and separate into sections. Hold the tool horizontally, press to open the clamp and capture the top of the hair section between the barrels. Release and open the clamp. Repeat until the whole section is styled. Finish with a texture holding spray.

Method #3: Redhead Hair Buns

Wash your red hair, section it into equal parts, and twist and wrap it into two to four low buns. You can spray a little hairspray for extra hold and definition.

‘Redhead Friendly’ Tip: This is best to do at night after you get out of the shower since your hair should be dry by the time you wake up in the morning.

Method #4: A Mix

Depending on your hair type, a mix of methods 1-3 could work best for you. Spray sea salt and put your red hair into buns. Or, with dry red hair, use a curling iron and put your hair into buns that night before bed. Do what works for your hair type!

Method #5: A Perm

Unfortunately, perms have a bad wrap thanks to the 1980′s, but with the right hairstylist and the right technique, you will be getting the following comments: “Get out! It’s a perm?!” “Really? It looks so natural! It’s not all kinky curly at all! Wow!” Read more here.

Natural Mexican Redhead: “Having Natural Red Hair is Something To Flaunt”

By: Carmina Alvarez

I am from Mexico with natural red hair. Growing up, I had heard many hispanics have red hair, but I am the only one in my community.

As a teenager, I felt like an outcast and was the target of a lot of jokes. I was even tempted on dying my hair a dark brown color just to “fit in,” but but my mom would never allow me to do so. She would say, “You are the prettiest girl in all the school and you stand out in a ‘sea of people’ that all look alike!”

As I grew older, I understood that having natural red hair is not something to be ashamed of and is something that should be flaunted.

My advice to girls who feel this way: do not feel bad about your hair color. Even if you “don’t fit the mold” and you have more olive toned skin, it doesn’t matter. You should be proud of your red hair.

There are recent studies that say that red hair is the most coveted hair color and millions of dollars of sales are to purchase red hair dye. So, you are completely blessed for being born with beautiful red hair.

Remember to take good care of your red hair by using proper ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved shampoos and conditioners and always Rock it like a Redhead!

Ask Rona: I am on the hunt for the right shade of red

First of all, I’d like to say I wish I’d stumbled upon this website when I was 14 – in the last week since finding this blog I have had a million “why haven’t I thought of that??” moments. Anyway, onto my question. I am 21 and have struggled with problematic, red sensitive skin and the never ending hunt for the right shade of red years (my hair is naturally a blondish/red color but I switch it up with different reds). I am looking for a shade of red that doesn’t enhance my red skin, but compliments it. Any advice ? Please help!

By: Rona O’Connor: Dear Allison,
I can relate! If you’re wanting to be a redhead, choose colors with more natural undertones to the red. In other words, more brown or auburn; something that has a grounded tone to it. Try to stay away from bright, light ruby undertones or fiery coppers as they will enhance the red in your skin.  Stick with cooled reds with blue undertones if you want to try a brighter look. One other option: try adding natural red lights to your natural hair. Good Luck!
