How Redheads Can Protect Their Skin From Blue Light Damage

We know our eyes need to be protected from blue light, but have you thought about your skin?

You’ve probably heard of blue light and maybe you even own redhead-approved blue light glasses. Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum and contributes to eye strain, skin barrier damage, and increased signs of aging. That’s why redheads with more sensitive skin and eyes should seek protection from blue light. But, have you ever thought about how blue light could be harming your SKIN?

Our main source of blue light exposure actually comes from the sun, other forms of blue light comes from mobile cell phones, computers and tablets. Blue light itself is a short-wave blue light in the spectrum of colors visible to the human eye. Its wavelength is in the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. People have started to worry about the health effects of blue light, especially since many of us spend 8+ hours a day staring at phones and computers which means we get a significant amount of blue light exposure from our devices.

What should we do to protect ourselves?

    Protection for your eyes

You can protect your eyes from the harmful effects of blue light by wearing blue light glasses when you use your devices like computers, tablets, and phones. Blue light protection can also be built into regular prescription glasses if you wear glasses already. Blue light protection for the eyes can also be found in the form of polarized sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays in addition to blue light.

    Protection for your skin

Now, this is super interesting. The beauty industry has just started talking about protecting skin from blue light that comes from our devices (and the sun).  It’s important to wear blue-light-blocking skincare even when you’re indoors and in the wintertime. Blue light protection is being found in more and more skincare products, especially those with SPF. Try a blue light-blocking skin tint like the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint with SPF 40, or add full spectrum drops to your routine like these ones from Coola that have SPF 30.

Not all blue light is bad, and blue light isn’t something to be afraid of. Like the sun, we just have to learn to protect our skin and eyes from blue light rays so we stay healthy and vibrant.

7 Redhead-Approved Colors to Embrace This Summer

Step out of your comfort zone!

    Updated: March 14, 2023

As redheads, we naturally fit into the color scheme of autumn and the summer months can be a little confusing. Neons and bold colors? You might ask yourself, “Can redheads even wear those colors?” Coordinating your hottest accessory (your hair) with your summer attire is easy with these Redhead-Approved colors to embrace this summer:

    1. Raspberry sorbet

Just the name makes me want to sit outside with a frozen drink while feeling the summer breeze. This vibrant pink will look amazing on any redhead, as it will offset our fair skin by adding an extra pop of color to our day. If you need more convincing, check out Emma Stone in this raspberry sorbet skirt.

    2. Sky blue

Blue and orange sit across from one another in the color wheel, making them complementary colors. Bring out the bold copper tones in your hair with a soft sky blue. Not only will it complement your hair, but it will compliment your fair skin as well.

    3. Rust

While typically seen as a fall color, Marie Claire gives rust a new spotlight as one of their top colors to wear this summer. A lover of rust-colored clothes, I say this is a color for all seasons. As a great complement to your red hair, rust complements your skin tone and helps make your hair shine bright. This off-red is a perfect way to mix up the typical brighter red we wear regularly.

    4. Emerald

A classic redhead shade that never disappoints. Just ask TikTok:

    5. Mint

A round-up of the top summer colors for redheads would not be complete without green on the list. While not as intense as emerald green, this is still the perfect shade to complement our red hair while embracing nature this summer. This mint-green organic cotton maxi dress is ideal for any redhead spending the day out with friends.

    6. Orange

As a redhead, you’ve probably been told to stay away from orange all your life, but what complements red hair better than orangey tones? Opt for a peachier orange or a more burnt orange instead of traffic cone orange and you’ll look like a ray of sunshine.

    7. Bright White

Don’t be afraid to wear white as a redhead. While many say that the color can wash a redhead out, the perfect accessories and make-up are the key to rocking white. Black might be the go-to for the colder months, but nothing makes red hair pop like crisp white in the summer. Julianne Moore frequently wears white and never fails to rock the shade. Just check out her outfit from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

White will enhance the look of your red hair and it will also give your skin a little extra color.

How Redheads Can Treat a Sunburn Quickly At Home

    Bye stinging, redness and peeling!

Even when you are wearing sunscreen and using proper sun protection, sunburns can still happen. As redheads, we’ve probably all had a sunburn we needed relief from. Here are a few sunburn hacks to help get sunburn relief fast:

    Cool down the burn

When you have a sunburn, you might notice your skin is hot to the touch. This can often cause discomfort and itchiness. Cool down the burn by taking a cool shower, applying chilled aloe vera gel, and/or taking ibuprofen or aspirin* to reduce inflammation.

    Use emergency burn gel

Most people’s immediate reaction to a burn is to use aloe, but have you tried Emergency Burn Gel? It’s a great way to treat your sunburn while it’s fresh. The gel contains aloe, to help soothe the redness of the skin, while 4% lidocaine helps with any pain and itchiness. Your burn won’t disappear overnight but it will look and feel a lot better.

    Keep skin moisturized

Sunburns occur when your skin is damaged due to overexposure to UV light. Once the skin is damaged, the best thing you can do for it is to keep it moisturized. Drink lots of water and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer intended for sensitive skin.

    Lay off the skincare

Sometimes sunburns peel, and when this happens it may be tempting to try and remedy the problem with skincare. Exfoliating and applying skincare products to a fresh burn can actually really irritate the sunburn. Lay off the skincare (with the exception of moisturizer) until your burnt starts to heal.

    Wear loose clothing

Pressure on your sunburn can be quite painful. Try wearing soft, loose-fitting clothing to avoid irritating the skin. Reduced irritation will not only make the burn feel better, but it will help to keep the redness down.

    Take an oatmeal bath

If your burn feels itchy or uncomfortable, you can get some relief by taking an oatmeal bath. Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties, so try adding whole oats to a cool or lukewarm bath to soothe the skin. Avoid hot baths as they will irritate the burnt skin.

Less is More: Summer Makeup Tips for Redheads

    Show off your natural beauty!

Summer is the time to embrace your natural redhead beauty, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up makeup altogether! So, what makeup should you be wearing in the summer? It is a very personal choice, but here are a few minimalist redhead makeup tips that will have you looking great all summer long:

    Skip heavy foundation

When it’s hot, we tend to sweat more if we are wearing heavy makeup. Combined with our skin’s natural oils, this makes our faces look shiny, sticky, and cakey. Skip the heavy foundation in favor of a light tinted moisturizer or a light coverage CC cream over your sunscreen.

    Tame those redhead brows

Redheads usually have lighter brows, but their hairs are more coarse. Try Finally Have Brows tinted brow gel by How to be a Redhead to keep them locked into shape, tinted and tamed.

    Lift your lashes

Like our brows, redheads typically have light eyelashes. When you aren’t doing a full face of glam, heavy mascara can look out of place. Give your lashes a nice curl and opt for a brown tinted mascara to give you a little life and color.

    Don’t forget the lips

Wearing light makeup usually doesn’t bode well with a bold lip. Skip the classic lipstick and go for a nude gloss or tinted lip balm instead. Don’t forget to pop on something with SPF under your lip color to keep your lips from burning.

How To Protect Your Red Hair From Chlorine

Don't let chlorine fade your gorgeous red locks!

Chlorine is a chemical added to pools and hot tubs that helps to sanitize the water. It keeps the water clean and safe to swim in. The downside of chlorine is that it can dry out your sensitive skin and red hair. It can also lead to fading and discoloration of the hair — and redheads don’t want that!

Here are a few ways you can protect your red hair from chlorine this summer:

Don’t swim with freshly washed hair

This is important for redheads with sensitivities. Lots of people rinse off before hitting the pool because it’s a great way to keep the pool clean for others. Just make sure you aren’t washing your hair right before getting into the pool. Depending on what’s in your shampoo, you might get a negative reaction to the chlorine.

    Rinse off hair/body after swimming

It’s best to shower after swimming to remove the chemicals from your hair and body. If you aren’t able to take a full shower afterward, at least make sure to rinse in non-chlorinated water to reduce damage.

    Immediately wash your red hair

If you are able to shower after your swim, or as soon as you’re able, make sure to fully wash your hair. This will help remove the chemicals and avoid any further damage. Make sure your shampoo is free of sulfates.

Keep your hair out of the water

The best way to protect your hair from chlorine damage is to not get it wet in a pool or hot tub. Put your hair up into a high bun or pony while hanging out in the pool, or use a protective swim cap to keep your hair dry while swimming.

    Deep condition

If you are spending a lot of time in chlorinated water, try and deep condition your hair on a regular basis to keep it nourished and hydrated. Here are 7 redhead-approved deep conditioners to use.

If your hair is fading due to too much chlorine, invest in a redhead color depositing shampoo! Shop here.

Why Redheads Should Be Exfoliating & How To Do It Safely

'Redhead Friendly' advice on getting the best skin ever

Exfoliating your skin is something you should be doing all year long. It is especially important during the summer months because most redheads are layering on sunscreen and this can cause pores to clog. There are a lot of benefits to exfoliating your skin and exfoliating regularly will help your skin be brighter, softer, and healthier.

Let’s talk about the benefits of exfoliating and also how to safely exfoliate your skin as a redhead:

    Benefits of Exfoliating

Unclog Your Pores & Prevents Acne: Dead skin, oil, and makeup clog our pores which leads to acne, bumps, and blemishes. When you exfoliate, you are removing that build-up from the skin and unclogging the pores. During the summer months, we slather on lots of lotions, sunscreens, and creams to protect our skin. This means we may have extra build-up that needs to be exfoliated off.

Allows Your Skincare to Do Its Job: Once the pores are unclogged, your skincare is able to absorb more quickly and more effectively into the skin. This means you’re getting more out of your moisturizers and lotions than you would be if they were just sitting on the surface. To properly protect your skin from the summer sun, you need SPF. Starting with a clean, even canvas allows your sunscreen to soak into the skin leaving you better protected.

Even Out Your Skin Tone & Texture: Removing dead skin and evening out dry patches allows for your skin to have a better tone and texture. This also means your makeup will apply more evenly and have a better finish. When the weather gets warmer, you might want to show a little more skin in dresses, skirts, shorts, and tank tops. Even tone and texture will have you feeling so much more confident in your summer style.

Boost Circulation and Improve Blood Flow: Scrubbing the skin will promote better blood flow and increased circulation. As the blood gets moving you will notice your skin has more color, glow, and shine. As redheads, most of us don’t get much color in the summer. Exfoliating your skin allows for your natural glow to shine through, and it gives you a great base if you choose to apply a self-tanner.

    How Many Times Per Week?

Depending on the product, you should only exfoliate with a redhead-approved exfoliator 2-3 times per week. Listen to your skin and don’t push it, but if you feel like your skin needs it, do it.

Safe & Effective Exfoliating Tips For Redheads

Facial Exfoliating: Redhead facial skin is usually ultra-sensitive. When exfoliating your face, opt for something gentle that is meant for sensitive skin. A facial exfoliant can also be used on the neck and chest if you have sensitive skin in those areas as well.

    Redhead-Friendly Product Suggestions:

    No7 Total Renewal Micro-Dermabrasion Exfoliator

    Genuine Glow Brio Phytonutrient Exfoliator

Body Exfoliating: Your body can handle a little more grit than your face, but since most redheads have super sensitive skin, you should use products and tools meant to gently exfoliate. Avoid exfoliating areas that are sunburnt. It may be tempting to get the peeling skin off, but it will irritate the already inflamed skin. Instead, keep it moisturized and let it slough off on its own.

    Redhead-Friendly Product Suggestion:

    Glossier Body Hero Exfoliating Bar

5 Easy Ways to Style Your Red Hair This Summer

Styles so easy you'll wear them all summer long!

Summer is about having fun and making memories. The last thing you want to worry about is having a bad hair day. Summer heat can lead to frizzy red hair, limp curls, and a sweaty neck. Skip the hassle of styling your hair just to have it fall out. Try these five easy, ‘Redhead Friendly’ summer hairstyles that will stay all day and look great:

    Fishtail Braid

Fishtail braids are easy, cute, and keep your hair out of your face. Fishtail braiding is so much easier than french braiding because you only work with two strands instead of three. Try one braid down the back, two braids, or even a half up half down situation with a fishtail braid worked in.

    Half Top Knot

If your hair isn’t long enough for a traditional top knot but you still want it out of your face, try a cute half top knot. Just gather hair front the temple up and secure it for a flirty look that stays all day. Add a scrunchie or hair scarf for an extra pop of fun!

    High Pony

Get your hair out of your face and off your neck with a high pony. Try a messy pony for during the day and a slicked-back pony at night for a chic summer look that never goes out of style. Try adding a colored scrunchie to match your outfit or wrap your hair around to cover the hair tie.

    Balloon Ponytail

You’ve probably seen balloon ponytails and pigtails making their way around the internet this summer. It’s a great way to add a pop of fun and style to your basic ponytail. Once your ponytail is complete, just add elastics 1-2 inches apart and then gently tug the hair to make the bubbles.

    Sleek Low Bun

For a look that’s both sophisticated and stylish, try a sleek low bun. Part hair down the middle or brush back and smooth down. Gather hair at the nape of the neck and secure. For a flirty look, try pulling out the front strands of hair or adding a hair accessory. And to add more fun to the look, add a braid to your low bun.

How To Soothe Redness and Calm Flushed Redhead Skin

Don't let redness overshadow your beautiful skin

When you have ultra-sensitive skin that is low in melanin (like most redheads do), your skin tends to show redness, irritation, and inflammation more than others. Redness of the skin can be embarrassing and annoying. If your skin redness is from sunburn, exertion from exercise, or from general irritation, here are a few ways to reduce that redness:

    1. Take a cool bath or shower

When we get hot from weather, exercise, or other forms of excursion, it’s common for our skin to get flushed and red. This primarily occurs on the face and around the neck and chest. To cool the skin and provide some relief, try taking a cool bath or shower. It will bring your body temperature back down to normal and allow your skin to lose its flush.

    2. Apply a cooling moisturizer

If your skin is red from sunburn or general heat, you can provide yourself with some relief by applying a cool or chilled moisturizer. Creams and gels with aloe vera in them can help to soothe the skin.

‘Redhead Friendly’ recommendation: Cetaphil Soothing Gel-cream with Aloe

    3. Stay hydrated

Redness and red patches on the face can occur from dehydration. Make sure to drinks lots of water to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Hydration also helps with redness from sunburns.

    4. Stop exfoliating

If you notice redness in your skin, skip the exfoliating. The redness may be a sign your skin is over-exfoliated or irritated. Giving your skin some time to breathe while moisturizing will allow it to bounce back and recover.

    5. Cover up

The most common cause of redness of the skin among redheads is sunburn. Our fair skin burns more easily than those with more melanin in their skin. That means it’s important to cover up, use sunscreen and limit your time in direct sunlight. Last but not least, invest in UPF clothing to prevent irritations and sunburns.

If you have persistent redness of the skin, bumps, or dry patches, please consult your dermatologist for the best way to proceed in reducing redness.
