Swimming Can Damage Your Red Hair: How to Stop It

Don't let chlorine damage your hair

The best part of summer is enjoying the weather, but sometimes your hair can suffer from outdoor swimming activities. Most swimming pools maintain high levels of certain chemicals, especially chlorine, in order to keep the water clean and bacteria-free. High levels of chlorine can strip your red hair, leaving it dry and prone to split ends.

Here are some simple tips to keep your red hair looking gorgeous:

1. Wet it First:

Your hair absorbs whatever it comes into contact with first. The best way to protect your red hair is to wet your hair with regular water first. Your hair will absorb the clean water and that way, it won’t be as affected by the chlorine.

2. Apply Conditioner:

This is our favorite trick because it is an even better way to keep your hair from absorbing too much chlorine. You can either wet your hair and apply conditioner or simply add a coat of conditioner to your locks. Make sure to comb the chlorine through your hair to make sure every piece of hair is coated with conditioner.

3. Hair Cap:

A hair cap is probably the most effective and easiest way to protect your hair. The rubber in the cab will keep your hair safe from the harmful chemicals.

4. Protection:

After swimming, make sure to thoroughly wash your hair with a great ‘redhead friendly’ shampoo and conditioner –– preferably a brand that doesn’t contain sulfates.

Also, make sure you’re spraying your locks with SPF, too!
