Like the Stars: How to Make Your Eyes Look Bigger

Celebrities always appear to have beautifully, defined eyes; they are either large & smokey, large & flirtatious and/or large & sparkling. Think: Christina Hendricks! How does this happen? Well, makeup artists have ways of illuminating the eye to attract notice.

The tricks are easy to replicate at home. All you need to do is buy the right tools, learn to use it well and your eyes will soon have the same fabulous, celebrity effect.

Practice these techniques:

1. Curl eyelashes with eyelash curler and mascara

An eyelash curler is a necessary instrument for any woman; irrespective of the length, thickness and shape of her eyelashes. You can either curl your eyelashes before or after the application the mascara. As long as the mascara has dried, there is no need to worry about the eyelash curler smudging your mascara.

Some women subject their eyelash curler to the warm blast of a hair dryer to for three seconds to give it extra staying power. But, be careful that the eyelash curler doesn’t get too hot!

As for lower lashes, it is entirely up to your discretion. Makeup artists tend to avoid mascara on the lower lashes, claiming it causes narrowing of the eyes. The effect has been observed in some women, but not in all. Certain women have a special eye shape so mascara and eyeliner on the lower lashes adds a dramatic flair. You have to be the judge on whether it will look good on you.

2. False eyelashes are attention-grabbing

Considering the variety featured in stores (different colors, embellishments and more!), false eyelashes are flattering and heavily open up the eye. Many women attest to the fact that false eyelashes clearly define their eyes.

Tip: Pick eyelashes that are natural-looking, short, slightly curled and add volume.  They can be either full eyelashes or individual eyelashes. Whichever you choose, make sure they are complementary. If false eyelashes are too long, cut them with scissors.

3. White eyeshadow to brighten eyes

Apply a little white light eyeshade on the inside ridge of your eyes, at the place where the upper lid falls to the bottom lid, closer to the tear ducts. The dab of white brightens the eyes and lends them a white sheen. For a doe-eyed look that oozes elegance, streak your lower lids with a creamy white eye pencil.

4. Eyelid health for skin tightness

The chemicals in makeup can play havoc on your skin, especially if makeup application is an everyday occurrence.

The best solution to skin degradation is to start using special eye firming cream. This advice is more imperative for those women of Asian heritage as their eyes are more susceptible to sagging eyelid skin. If you start early, you can be assured of prolonged elasticity of the eyelid skin, allowing you to display bright, large eyes for years.

5. Highlighter and foundation to reflect

-Brush a highlighter across your brow bone; blend a path down your eyelids. The powder will reflect the light to enhance the entire eye area.

-The application of foundation all over your eyelids, a little sprinkle to the mid lengths of your eyelashes, will give an even base for the introduction of mascara. Heighten the allure.

These makeup tips are all you need to flaunt your beautiful, big eyes and red hair. You can captivate anyone with eyes that speak a silent language!

5 Best Redhead Approved Budget Beauty Tips

For many of us angelically generous reds, the holidays, New Year and Valentine’s Day took quite the hit to our wallet. Now may be a good time to reassess our spending without depriving our looks. Here are some redhead approved beauty tricks of the trade you can find right in your home.

1. Baking Soda

Wintertime is essential for exfoliation. Baking soda has tiny granules of sodium bicarbonate that will slough off dead skin. It is safe to use on the most sensitive types and its antiseptic properties will help fight breakouts. Another use for baking soda is to mix it with your toothpaste to whiten teeth.

2. Oatmeal

This delicious, healthy and cheap breakfast option is great for oily or irritated skin. For a facial mask, cook oatmeal then wait for it to cool. Mix oatmeal, olive oil and water to create a paste and apply. Let it soak on the skin until the edges crust. Then, rinse with warm water using a washcloth. For the body, pour a few cups into a warm bath water and soak in the tub for at least 10 minutes.

3. Coffee

After brewing your morning cup of joe, save the grinds and lightly rub into areas of skin that have cellulite, the natural diuretic will draw out water from targeted areas revealing smoother skin.

4. Asprin*

Get ready to treat more than a headache with Aspirin. This anti-inflammatory contains salicylic acid and beta hydroxy acid which helps to reduce swelling and dries up blemishes. Simply crush one aspirin and mix with it water to make a paste. Dab it on your pimple with a Q-Tip.

5. Parsley

It may sound odd but parsley is a great natural remedy to reduce the look of under-eye circles. It contains vitamin K which reduces blood flow to the eye area when applied topically. Warning, please do not dice up parsley and sprinkle it on your eyes. Instead try mixing it with a spoonful of plain yogurt which cools and moisturizes the skin in a food processor, apply a generous amount to the under-eye area, let it sit for 20 minutes then rinse.

4 Ways To Add Shine To Your Red Hair

Updated: October 25th, 2023

The winter months can really damage your hair, leaving it looking dull and unhealthy. Use these simple tricks to keep it looking shiny and beautifully red:

1. KEEP THE MOISTURE IN

Using a humidifier isn’t only good to lock moisture into your hair, but it will help keep your skin dewy as well! If that’s not enough to get the shiny bounce you’re looking for, try out Finally Glossy® Shine & Luminosity Shampoo for Redheads.

It took many years to custom-make the Finally Glossy® formula and we’re so excited for redheads to enjoy it. We’re thrilled to release another clean redhead beauty product. It is paraben-free, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, petroleum-free, mineral-oil, and vegan. It also contains no perfume, is free of gluten and is silicone-free, phthalate-free, formaldehyde-free and cocamidopropyl betaine-free. This clean formula is formulated with Vitamin B3, olive oil, coconut oil and green tea.

2. DIET DOES MATTER

Foods that are good for your skin are good for your hair too and give it a natural shine…and they’re good for you too!  Think salmon, dark greens, beans, nuts, and eggs—they all have essential oils and healthy fats that will boost the immunity of your locks (and get you swimsuit ready by summertime)!

3. PLAY NICE WITH STYLING TOOLS

Stick to boar-bristle brushes and ionic blow dryers while styling your hair.  Boar-bristle brushes are much less damaging than their plastic counterparts, and ionic blow dryers are scientifically designed to protect your hair from the harsh heat.  For an added protection factor, use a heat protection spray—it’s like sunscreen for each strand of your precious ginger mane.

BONUS: How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel

When drying your hair opt to use a microfiber towel! Introducing the How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads. Because wet hair is at its most vulnerable, this custom microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your red hair and dries it quickly, all while protecting it from stretching and breakage. This design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place. Your hair journey starts here, redheads.

4. KEEP IT CLEAN:

Hard water from your shower and even everyday life can lead to damaging mineral buildup on your hair, especially near the roots.  It can weigh your hair down and make the color look dull and brassy (especially for us redheads!).  To battle the build-up, cleanse your hair with a mixture of ¼ cup apple cider vinegar and ¾ cup water and apply every other week for an at-home treatment that will inspire salon envy.

7 Makeup Tricks To Make Your Eyes Pop

Redheads typically have green or blue eyes and others have brown. Whichever color you have, here are 7 tricks to make your eyes (and hair) pop:

1. Apply Eyeliner For Your Eye: Women should line their eyes according to their eye shape. For instance, if you have super big eyes, it would be beneficial to line the top lid and the bottom. But, this wouldn’t work for someone with smaller eyes; instead, apply the liner both halfway on top and bottom. Find out what works for you and work it!

2. Smudge: If you can’t get a straight line when applying eyeliner, use a brush to create smudging; this a natural and timeless look.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Use Too Much Mascara: Make sure to coat every lash all the way to the tip and concentrate on the corners and outside lashes. Use a brown or black/brown to make your eyes and red hair pop.

4. Enhance The Eyebrow: Eyebrows have a big effect on the appearance of your eyes, which is why they should always be maintained and groomed. If you do not have naturally thick eyebrows, use a pencil that is a bit lighter than your natural color to define the shape, then follow with a brow powder that is closer to your natural hair color. After, use a brow gel to set the powder.

5. Open Up The Eye: Take a white pencil and line the rim of your lower eyelid.

6. Soft and Eye-Poppin’: Line your top lid with black eyeliner and your lower with brown liner. This will make your eyes pop, but still give you a soft look.

7. Layer Your Liner: Nothing makes the eyes pop more than eyeliner and sometimes it can be difficult to draw a perfect line. So, line your eyes first with a pencil liner then go over it with liquid liner. The eyeliner will stay on, smudge-free!

Ask Rona: How Do I Get Amy Adams’ Color?

QUESTION: I love Amy Adam’s red hair! What drugstore permanent colors can I mix to get her hair color and do I need to do anything special to prevent the roots of my hair from being noticeably warmer than my tips, also known as “hot roots.” My hair is currently a light golden blonde.  Thank you!  Jenna

ANSWER: By: Rona O’Conner: Hi Jenna! If you’re a light golden blonde, you’re going to want to look for a level 8 or 9, a light natural golden copper. Opt for a product like L’Oreal Couleur Experte Express Easy 2-in-1 Color + Highlights, Light Golden Copper Brown Ginger Twist 6.4.

If you have had the “hot roots” experience in the past, it could be the result of choosing a color that may not have enough natural tones to keep it grounded on lighter hair. Without getting complicated, the first half inch (root area) of the hair absorbs color differently than the mid-lengths through the ends. If you have any hesitations or concerns, it might be best, if this is your first time going red, to schedule an appointment with a colorist.

2. Be careful when drying your hair: Soft Microfiber Hair Towel

3. Deep condition

Deep conditioning your hair reduces any damage from heat, pollution, or even brushing. Use a deep conditioner after shampooing your hair, concentrating on the ends. Leave on your hair for the time indicated on the product, or about 5 minutes, and rinse well.

4. Heat

Heat can damage your hair and can make your red hair look damaged and frizzy. However, straightening and curling can give your hair instant shine IF you use heat protection products.

5. Swap your hairbrush

Invest in a brush made with natural bristles, preferably boar. This will redistribute oils throughout your hair as you brush, restoring natural shine.

6. Water

Some of us just don’t drink enough water! Hydrating the body gives life to everything, including your red hair.

7. Cold rinse

One really easy and cheap way to gain some shine is to always rinse your hair with cold water at the end of your shower. This trick works because it closes the hair cuticles making your hair smoother.
