What Every Redhead Should Know About Her High Heels

Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Roger Vivier, and Sergio Rossi – do these names send a thrill of excitement pulsing through your veins? Wipe the drool away from your face, ladies, and read on! As much we love watching Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw romping around New York City in stilettos, this just may not be realistic for most of us.

When it comes to shoes, particularly high heels, if you find yourself regularly sacrificing comfort for fashion, you may be doing more damage than you know. It is likely that you are experiencing chronic foot pain, including corns, calluses, bunions, hammertoes, or excruciating pain in the ball of your foot. If this pain worsens over time, then it may be time to reassess your choice in footwear.

It’s important to recognize that high heels constrict the natural shape of your foot, and put pressure on the toes to begin with. Try walking in them over an extended period of time, and you are adding weight – your whole body weight – to the already constricted area.

Got bunions? You know, that painful, aching bony protrusion at the base of the big toe that distorts the shape of the foot? High heels are known to aggravate bunions. The height of the heel sends the weight forward, putting a great amount of pressure on the ball of the foot, and causing a great deal of pain. While lowering the height of your heel to two-inches or less may bring some relief, many women need to get surgery to remove these bunions and straighten the foot.

Other common problems such as corns and calluses occur due to the added pressure from squeezing our toes into high heels. These corns and calluses are thick layers of dead skin that accumulate to protect the affected areas from this constant weight-bearing friction. This problem is especially worsened if shoes don’t quite fit properly.

Research proves that foot pain due to heels increases over time due to the wearing away of the padding on the bottom of our feet. These “fat pads,” as they are called, serve as protective cushioning for the bottom of our feet, and as they thin out over the years, especially after subjecting the feet to the rigors of heels, foot pain goes from bad to worse.

But fear not redheads! No one is telling you to toss your stilettos and resign to a life of tennis shoes. However, there are ways to get smarter about your shoe choices.

Here are six ways to relieve your feet from pressure, but still look rockin’ in your heels:

1. First of all, make sure that your shoe fits properly. If there is a large gap in the rear between your foot and the shoe, rocketing all of your weight forward, then you may want to consider getting resized.

2. Shoe inserts are another option, as they provide extra cushioning for the feet. Orthaheel makes shoe inserts and orthotics that can be found at sites like Footwear Etc. These serve as shock absorbers and replace lost fat pads.

3. Another precautionary suggestion is to vary the height of the heel to give the Achilles tendon some relief.

4. Also, go for a thicker heel to provide better stability and to reduce the pressure on the foot.

5. Pay attention to the angle of the shoe. Footwear that have a more gradual slope protect the arch and the ball of the foot, making platforms arguably healthier than stilettos.

6. Give your toes a breather! Podiatrists can remove corns and calluses, but open-toed shoes are an option to reduce the pressure found from squeezing the toes into narrow, pointy tips.

Feeling hot is just as important as looking hot, so we want you to continue to explore your fashion sense – in a sensible fashion.

Some may say it’s more important than your daytime routine simply because your skin absorbs the nutrients in your products better at night. Interviews

Exclusive Interview with Challen Cates of Nickelodeon’s ‘Big Time Rush’

Challen Cates is an American actress best known for portraying Mrs. Jennifer Knight on the hit Nickelodeon TV series ‘Big Time Rush’. She is a wife and mother of two.  She has been in all four of the ‘Big Time Rush’ films. She also has appeared in Desperate Housewives, Criminal Minds, CSI: New York, Monk, and Lifetime’s Missing.

She sat down with How to be a Redhead to discuss her life as an actress, redhead beauty secrets.. and more.

H2BAR: Why do you love being a redhead?

CC: It gives me a convenient excuse for being fiery!

H2BAR: Did you always know you were going to be an actress?

CC: I always wanted to be an actress, but I grew up in the country so I didn’t know how to go about doing it.

H2BAR: You currently play the role of Jennifer Knight on ‘Big Time Rush.’ Can you tell us a bit about your character?

CC: Jennifer Knight is unflappable, fun, funny, and fiercely protective of her kids.  She is determined to always do the right thing which often ends up backfiring, which is where the viewers get to watch the comedy unfold.

redhead-challen-cates-interview-how-to-be-a-redhead1H2BAR: What do you love most about being on a popular television show?

CC: Our wonderful fans and, of course, being asked lovely questions like these!

H2BAR: You must get your hair and make-up done on set a lot. What is your go-to makeup and hair look while playing Jennifer and being yourself off set?

CC: My character is much more conservative than I am in my personal life.  Jennifer Knight’s makeup is basic, natural, soft, and never too sexy or daring.  We played around with a lot of different hair styles while still staying within character. Off set, I like to experiment with different looks with hair and makeup.  I am a bit of a makeup junkie so when I have the time, I like to play with different products and colors.

H2BAR: Were you one of the only redheads in your neighborhood growing up?

CC: Wow. I never really thought about it, but YES I was!  I never even thought of myself as a redhead until boys in high school started teasing me and calling me Charlie Brown’s girlfriend aka ‘The Little Red Headed Girl.’

H2BAR: Does red hair run in your family?

CC: Yes. My great-grandmother and my dad were strawberry blondes.

H2BAR: With redheads having such sensitive skin, what are your go-to skin products?

CCL Because I am such a beauty product junkie, I switch things up a lot.  Right now I am into Dr. Perricone’s skin care line. I love Egyptian Magic when my skin is feeling extra sensitive.  Also, I wear tons of sunscreen. I prefer sunscreen that is more natural like Alba or Kiss My Face and sometimes just use zinc oxide.

H2BAR: What are your favorite “redhead friendly” wardrobe colors to wear?

CC: I like to break the rules!  I am not afraid to rock a hot pink dress. In fact, I wore one to the 2012 Kid’s Choice Awards by Camilla and Marc and it is one of my favorite red carpet looks. Traditionally, I think that my most flattering colors for redheads are green, purple, blue, peach, and black.

H2BAR: What is one makeup product that you will buy over-and-over again?

CC: Jane Iredale mascara is amazing and I love that it is all natural. Egyptian Magic because it works magic on any skin issue.

H2BAR: Do you have any beauty secrets?

CC: Lansinoh nipple cream is the best lip moisturizer ever—I found that one out when I had a stockpile of it after having my last child and thought I’d try a little experiment for fun.

H2BAR: What’s in store for you for the rest of 2013 and 2014?

CC: For the rest of 2013, I am getting my kids off to a good start with the new school year, harvest for my family’s winery, and writing a web series. For 2014, it will be all about exploration and possibilities galore!

Jessica Chastain Shares Her Energy Secret And It’s Not What You Think

Could it also be the secret behind her gorgeous skin?

Updated on May 22, 2020

Jessica Chastain is one of our favorite redhead celebrities and has had a bountiful few years. She became the first woman in nearly fifty years to have the leading role in the top two movies at the box office, she accomplished this honor when Mama (2013) debuted in the #1 spot knocking Zero Dark Thirty (2013)  to the #2 position. This marked the second time that she had two movies at the top of the box office twice: in 2011 she had The Help (2011) (at #1) and The Debt (2010).

She then premiered in Interstellar (2014). The film earned over $675 million worldwide to become Chastain’s highest-grossing live-action film. In late 2014, A Most Violent Year. She received a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination for the film.

In 2015, Chastain took on the part of a commander in Ridley Scott’s science fiction film The Martian. Also in 2016, Chastain launched a production company named Freckle Films, headed by a team of female executives.

She began 2017 by serving as the executive producer and providing the narration for I Am Jane Doe, a documentary on sex trafficking. She ended the year portraying Molly Bloom, a former skier who ran a high-profile gambling operation that led to her arrest by the FBI, in Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, Molly’s Game.

So how does she do it all? Chastain commented on her busy life saying, “In this business, it’s very tough to maintain a relationship because we’re like gypsies – always on the move.”

She told Glamour magazine in August 2013, “It all comes from a vegan diet and green tea. I don’t even drink Red Bull!”

We all know that green tea has its benefits, like metabolism boost, anti-aging, and an increase in energy. But, what type of tea is Chastain drinking do you ask? Kusmi Tea Jasmine Green Tea.

Maybe this is why Chastain has such gorgeous skin, too. Studies have proven that products containing the green tea extract may help to neutralize the effects of UV rays when combined with an effective sunblock.

Do you drink green tea?

Redhead Makeup Tips- Celebrity Makeup Artist Joanna Schlip Shares Her Secrets

Redhead makeup tips can be intimidating for even the most cosmetic savvy of us. Many wonder what foundation is the best, how to showcase freckles and if redheads can wear colored makeup, like bright eyeshadow and lipstick. To help us tackle all questions, we turned to Joanna Schlip, Celebrity Makeup Artist for Physicians Formula, for the top three makeup tips for redheads.

1. “Show off a radiant complexion (and let freckles show through) by using a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream.  It will provide coverage without being heavy or cakey.  Remember to opt for your skin tone, not your freckle tone!

2. “Redheads with super fair lashes can still wear black mascara. For me, it’s all about the amount rather than the color.  If using black, apply one sheer swipe.  If you’re looking to create more volume, opt for a dark brown.”

3. “Redheads can absolutely wear color, and they should!  Although earth tones work well too, redheads look great with a colorful eye or lip.  Try a lavender, turquoise or royal blue shadow or liner with a nude lip or a simple eye with a pop of red lipstick. Don’t be shy!”

GIVEAWAY: One Red Fits All, Hosted by ELLIS FAAS

Vogue Paris named Ellis Faas “one of the most influential make-up artists of her time.” She has worked with the most prominent fashion designers, photographers, stylists, hairdressers and models. At one point, Ellis was managing an army of makeup artists and instructing them how to apply the makeup for Fendi and Chanel.

She was asked by L’Oréal to create a make-up line for one of their skin brands and after the contract was over in 2007, it paved the way for her to create her own makeup brand: ELLIS FAAS.

Every item has no scent, no creasing, no parabens and no animal testing.

Her makeup is like no other because it is futuristic, but with a modern look and feel. One of ELLIS FAAS’ most popular items is the ‘Blood Red’ lipstick and the makeup line’s motto is: “The only red is Ellis Faas.” The newest ELLIS FAAS collection, The Human Colors Collection looks to the human palette for inspiration. The colors that exist naturally in the human body are complex and rich and the makeup line has brilliantly re-created them for women around the globe.

ELLIS FAAS has said, “What better way to highlight a great feature or mask an imperfection than with tones and hues that already exist in each of us?”

Many people wonder if red lipstick looks good with red hair. Ellis Faas says, “That color [blood red] is the same in all of us, so therefore it doesn’t clash with anyone’s skin. So one red fits all: Ellis Red!”

Since red is ELLIS FAAS’ statement color, the makeup line frequently uses redheads to demonstrate how powerful and beautiful the color can be; which is why ELLIS FAAS has teamed up with HOW TO BE A REDHEAD to give 7 lucky winners an ‘ELLIS FAAS Customized Makeup Package’ for redheads.

How Redheads Should Find the Best Foundation Color Shade – MAKE UP FOR EVER Expert Weighs In

What is the best makeup for redheads? How to be a Redhead sat down with a MAKE UP FOR EVER expert about how redheads should find the right foundation.

“You should start with the basics on how to get the right foundation, then apply complimentary blush, shadow, and lip shades.”

Here are four tips on how to find the right foundation for your skin:

    1. Do you suspect that your current foundation is not the ‘right’ foundation? Try this trick: Take a swab soaked in makeup remover and remove a strip down the cheek. Observe the differences in shades; is the skin more pink or yellow underneath? Is the foundation enhancing your skin? This will help you determine what you want out of your foundation.

    2. Hold a white piece of paper under your chin to eliminate any colors being reflected on to the skin, this will allow your shade and undertones to pop.

    3. Next, choose the shade you believe is the correct fit – then choose one that is a shade darker and one a shade lighter. Stripe all three shades down your cheek, the one that disappears is the right match.

    4. Still need help trying to find the perfect foundation? Go to your local Sephora to get a match! More info here.
