The new The Little Mermaid movie is releasing in May 2023 and it’s already making waves (no pun intended).
In a heartwarming Instagram video posted to her account, actress Halle Bailey reacted to the new The Little Mermaid doll. The doll was modeled after Bailey and features Ariel’s signature red hair, along with Bailey’s stunning skin tone and even the mole above her eyebrow. We love the attention to detail.
Bailey talks about how special it is having a doll that looks like her. She calls it “surreal” and even chokes up with emotion when talking about it. As redheads, we can understand her emotion because we love to feel seen, too.

Since the original The Little Mermaid movie was released in 1989, Ariel has been white. While the majority of redheads do have fair skin, not all redheads are in this category. Redheads may be rare but we come from all over the world.
We couldn’t be more excited for this new Ariel. Redheads of caucasian decent have their Ariel, and we’ve known and loved her for more than 30 years; and she isn’t going anywhere. We still have the movies and memories, and now there’s another Ariel who can help others feel included. We can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with Ariel’s story all over again.
Congrats on the doll, Halle. We can’t wait to watch the movie!
