How to Protect a Redhead Baby’s Skin in the Fall

Redhead babies have super, super, super sensitive skin

I have four children and my fourth baby was my first redhead, and it was a girl! I wasn’t sure if she would have red hair like me because my other children are super blonde. She has a copper/auburn shade and her skin is as sensitive as mine. My niece is also a redhead toddler and needs protection from the sun and elements too.

The one thing I teach my daughter and niece is about the essential need of good skincare and sunscreen. My rule of thumb for all redhead-approved baby products is: gentle on us, tough on the sun! High SPF is important, but redhead babies have super, super, super sensitive skin and sunscreen can be harsh on our skin type. It’s essential to choose the right products.

So, what do you do when the seasons are transitioning? What products are the best? Not many people talk about transitioning a baby’s skin from summer to fall. Fall is one of the most complicated seasons for a baby because you have cool days (can lead to dry skin) and warm days (can lead to sunburn skin).

My rule of thumb is to prepare for every day like it’s a summer day.

The last thing you want is for your redhead baby to get sunburnt! Here are my favorite sun-safe products for my redhead baby:

Sunscreen mist

I love it because it’s gentle and easy. It’s also great so you don’t forget those areas, like the scalp and ears. These spots hurt when they get sunburn, and a mist or spray will provide good coverage.

Hats and eye protection

No matter if it’s cloudy, rainy or cool outside, I put a hat and eye protection on my redhead baby. As any redhead has experienced, you can get sunburnt when you least expect it.

Emergency after-sun relief

If all else fails and that beautiful redhead baby gets a bit too much sun, a good after care gel or lotion can help them feel a bit better. Mustela has this soothing product for after sun care, and I love almost anything Mustela has put out for pregnancy and baby care.

Redheads are so sensitive and easily sunburned, regardless of age, but I find my poor little baby is even more sensitive to the sun than I am. Prevent it at all costs, but if it happens, make sure you keep their skin comfortable and hydrated after sun exposure.
