‘Tis the season for weekend adventures, tropical getaways and fun in the sun. We all know the importance of packing ‘redhead friendly’ sunscreens with you on your next trip, but let’s not forget about another essential redhead beauty product: sunless tanner.
Sunless tanner gives you an effortless glow without damaging the skin. I avoid the sun as much as possible, so sunless tanners make me look like I tan (funny, right?!) –– also why they are called ‘fake’ tanners. With so many types of tanners on the market, I have found mousses to be easiest to apply and look the most natural.
When I go away, especially to a tropical destination, I apply sunless tanner mousse to my entire body (avoiding the face) with my mitt the night before my trip. I do this so I have a base glow to get me started. If I’m in the water a lot, I’ll reapply my sunless tanner right before dinner each night –– that way my glow sets in while I’m out and I wake up with it already on my skin. You’ll want to reapply each night (or every other) since the sunscreen you’re applying throughout the day will make some of the tanner go away.

A lightweight, buildable airy mousse that is our top favorite drugstore option.
3. L’Oreal Paris Skin Care Sublime Bronze Hydrating Self-Tanning Water Mousse, $11
We started using L’Oreal’s Sublime collection in high school –– starting with the Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. This mousse does take a couple of hours to set, so don’t rush! Apply and watch an episode of your favorite Netflix show.
4. Miami Gorgeous Self Tanning Mousse, $19
A popular mousse on Amazon that is getting praise for being streak-free and great for those with fair, sensitive skin.
5. St. TROPEZ Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $35
This vegan-friendly formula is a cult-favorite and has been a staple in our sunless tanner roundup for years. It dries quickly (in 60 seconds) and looks so natural.
Remember: the mitt will be your best friend! Apply the product to the mitt or directly on your skin and start working throughout your skin. After finishing, wash the mitt with lukewarm water and let it dry on your bathroom counter.
