How Redheads Can Exfoliate Their Lips

Keep your lips soft!

Updated: September 27, 2023

Many redheads take care of their sensitive skin, but forget about their lips. Dry/cold weather can make lips crack, swell and even peel. If you’re not exfoliating your lips, it’s time to start! Lip exfoliation is key for soft, healthy lips and the perfect application of your favorite lipsticks. During the colder months, lip exfoliation can help prevent uncomfortable chapped lips. Here’s everything redheads need to know about lip exfoliation:

Why is lip exfoliating so important?

Just like the skin on the rest of our face and body, our lips get dry and need attention. Many people think that simply applying chapstick or lip balm will solve the problem, but you need to get rid of the dead skin to prevent peeling, flaking, and cracking. Not only is lip exfoliation important for healthy lips, but it’s also the key to having a flawless finish when you apply lip products like lipstick.

How do I exfoliate my lips?

Your lips are a different thickness of skin than your face, so it’s best to use products specifically made for your lips. This also ensures that if you get any product in your mouth it is safe. You can use lip exfoliating masks, lip scrubs, actual organic sugar (if you’re going DIY) or any other gentle lip exfoliating products. Opt for something for sensitive skin and exfoliate once or twice a week to keep from over-exfoliating.

Other steps to take care of your lips

While you’re getting your exfoliating routine down, make sure you’re also hydrating internally by drinking plenty of water, and externally by applying a moisturizing lip balm that is free of chemicals and dyes. It’s also important to apply SPF to your lips when outdoors during the day.
